Spinning Yarn On Big Drop Spindles

These are the big wildcrafted drop spindles I make. I first made them to spin big yarns on while travelling.
I've made this video with some tips on working with them, and some time spinning a yarn I'm working on at the moment. This one is a super pompom spindle, some of the others have the smaller pompoms, and all of them have jingly bells 🌙🌿🍂🍃🪄

This spindle looks amazing! Unfortunately I seem incapable of properly using a drop spindle. A supported spindle works swimmingly but drop spindles don’t seem to agree with me. I do absolutely love the idea of a spindle with bells and/or pompoms though, and a whorl made of textile is something I’d never have thought of. Would you ever consider trying to make a supported spindle that uses the same concept? On re-shaping a whorl that’s gone wonky: any natural fibre that has lost its desired shape can generally be re-shaped using steam. Perhaps making a hole in a tennis ball, shoving the bottom end of the spindle into the hole, then inverting the whorl over it and holding the spindle by the shaft over a steam source (pan filled with boiling water, boiling kettle…) would work. Free-handing it should work too but I think some form of support inside the inverted whorl might help even more. Unless the bells and pompoms get in the way, of course. Then I’d advise just steaming it. Fast, efficient and I take frequent tea breaks throughout the day which means I’ve got steam handy for fibre projects almost all the time and it’s become my go-to solution. Works great for compacted fibre that is hard to draft too. A bit of steam and it blooms right open!
