Well, I found a useful purpose. Stair rules prevented creation of a too-narrow spiral stair in a project modeling existing conditions. (Lots of non-compliant stuff out there needs modeling, too.) Modeling the treads, column, & balusters as generic family was easy. Railing was the tricky part. The only variation encountered from the tutorial was that TWO profile circles were needed on planes orthoganal to the spline tangent. Otherwise it produced "horn" shapes, skinny in the middle and fat on the ends. Using the same dimensional parameter for both profiles worked perfectly.

I can't think of a functional use for this for my workflow, but it's cool regardless. I didn't know about adaptive components so I'll definitely be looking into them further, thanks!

I noticed that the spiral had a variable thickness after changing it to 40mm. Is there a way to obtain uniform thickness throughout? Maybe by making a blend where all points of the path are tied to the same parameter?

Arhh, didn't work for me "can't create adaptive spiral". Damn you Revit!
