It still kinda blows my mind we have a Saw movie starring Chris Rock and Sam Jackson. Like it still doesn’t feel like it should exist but I’m glad it does

They should've after Jigsaw. This one looks like a copy-cat of the first one, albeit made with a high-budget. It made no sense at all, to me. And I wish Hollywood would just stop fucking good franchises up with non-sense reboots, spin-offs, etcetera. And start to actually write and create original stories than repeating the same formula all over-again. It's becoming nauseaous, to the point that I don't even watch a trailer anymore, unless it is of a brand new original movie.
@@latayesha saw is a top 10 movie franchises. The story is always really good. Not saying that all the saw movies are good but I don’t dislike any of them
@Daddy Goat the only one that is truly bad in my opinion is Saw 3D the only really good ones were saw 1 saw 2 and saw 6 imo but I can see how a lot of people thought most movies were bad
@@emyserozzi8088 to be fair, the Saw franchise had been great until this one came along. Each sequel had met my expectations or surpassed them. I thought they'd be mediocre but they turned out great. Most franchise don't even last beyond the 1st sequel. Gotta give the past creators for making the most with what they had. But you're right. in retrospect, the last Jigsaw was the last great one. This wasn't even close to the quality of the usual Saw movie. It isn't suspenseful. The characters are awkward. I blame it on the casting choice. Chris Rock & Max Minghella were terrible casting choices. I don't think it's the fault of the writers. They did phenomenally with Jigsaw. It's unfortunate. There are so much potential. You could just sense it with how they give a poetic death to each victim

You mean we don't have good writers...OH BOY ITS ALMOST LIKE EVERYONE KNOW THIS! It use to be 1 movie out of 10 that came out was shit, now it's vice versa.
It's a shame because I think Chris Rock can do some legitimately solid dramatic work. His direction in Top Five was very solid, plus I think Everybody Hates Chris is one of the best sitcoms of all time.
His role in New jack city was amazing. A really underrated dramatic performance, but everybody remember only Wesley snipes in that movie, but Chris was excellent
I can't take him seriously....the second i hear his voice reciting dramatic lines I can't take it seriously. all i hear is chris rock playing a character.
I remember seeing that shit in theatres and damn near everyone was gasping and in shock then I remember watching it on DVD with my friends and patiently waited to see their reactions to the ending as well.
The first SAW movie change the landscape for scary horror movies the same way Scream did it in 1996 for its time imo. I thought SAW was unique and different at the time when it came out in 2004 although certain elements of the movie "Seven" inspired SAW.
Whenever we go see a Saw movie, my girlfriend and I end up seeing two different movies. I like the traps, and try to figure them out. She's into the CSI-type detective story. Something for the entire family!

Yeah, Fincher would've make a great Saw movie maybe even better than James Wan's version. I guess it's gonna be Panic Room meets Fight Club meets Se7en, then we got a Saw movie from David Fincher
yea i agree that would be a saw movie with a killer story seven is in my top 5 movies of all time as long as we heard somewhere in the movie the line " whats in the box" hahaha
A flashback that just forgets it's a flashback and follows the wrong POV walking away from the scene happens way too often in films, it always cracks me up.
Once I heard Christopher Nolan mention the rules of perspective in film, I could no longer NOT see that. Not just with flashbacks, but also just films suddenly telling the story from someone else's point of view.
@@aaronuzcategui4230 It's hard to recall examples on the fly because they're from movies that are so mediocre, but whenever it happens, it's noticeable at the time. The Transformers films often have people narrating flashbacks concerning mythology that get way more complicated than the character would be capable of knowing about. Titanic's POV breaks it's own reality on several levels. I'm assuming any adaptation of the religious or mythology texts like those Hollywood Greek Mythology films would break their POVs multiple times while using "mythology" as an excuse. I'm bound to see another example soon. Hopefully, I'll remember and come back to this comment.
The great curse of 2021 is that since covid had everything shut down in January, horrible January movies are now just freely roaming the rest of the year, striking at any time.
I'm just going to remark how refreshing it is that Chris is reviewing a movie I'll have a chance to see in my neighborhood theater the day after tomorrow. For me this is one of the most important signs that life may be returning to normal.

dude literally as soon as he was assigned his partner i said in my head "its him". when chris said he couldn't trust anybody in the police force i knew EVERY one of them had skeletons in their closet and would most likely die. i knew his dad especially had skeletons in his closet.seriously it took me 20 minutes to predict most of the movie. this film was so predictable and obvious i almost said "surely it's not gonna be like that" but it was exactly like that. gave me a good laugh though
@@anthonyosorio5120 I would argue its better than Uncut Gems, really liked Uncut but I feel like Good Time is a better start to finish movie while Uncut has some better individual scenes.
I’m apprehensive, it feels very Hollywood. When the series has always had actors that were unknown or we haven’t seen in awhile like Cary Elwes or Donnie Whalberg.
Just saw it a couple hours ago, and honestly doesn't feel that way. Chris is very correct when he says it feels much more high budget, but (in my opinion) it doesn't really sacrifice any of the grit or gore that makes the Saw movies unique. The Saw sequels are very consistent in their quality, with only Saw 7 being an absolute stinker and the rest being exactly as expected. I liked the traps, each of them felt like it followed the John Kramer "rules" of being extremely painful but doable. It's the same director as 2, 3, and 4, but it's closest in tone to 6 in that it tackles a modern social issue with the care and nuance of a late-period horror sequel. Worth the price of admission if you're already on the Saw train.
@@christianmarroquin8370 Really agree with your take. I just left the theatre and I really enjoyed it. I was excited to see a SAW film again. The 'twist' was decent enough but about 45 minutes in I guessed it, but it didn't stop the end from making an impact.
@@APTheis Absolutely agree with both of you. Even though I had speculated the copycat since the trailers, I found myself still hooked and wanting to find out more around their motives. I thought it went back to basics with the traps, none of them were too elaborate in the Rube Goldberg fun houses of the later in the series. They all seemed achievable (certainly in terms of the killer setting them up!), were so gruesome and grizzly and actually had a very clear message to the individual in them that also linked nicely to the main plot. It's certainly up there with one of my favorites in the series.
I felt it looked cheap in spots and really disappointing that they didn't take a gamble and up the budget and get a half decent director instead of a guy that already had his chance at the franchise considering that Sam Jackson & Chris Rock are the 2 biggest stars to ever be involved with the franchise
It was decently enjoyable. Like you said a very watchable film. But to me it didn't feel like a Saw film. Yes it had some Saw tropes that we know and love, but it just felt off. I knew the twist pretty much immediately. And it did what so many horror movies of late, at least at the beginning of 2020, are doing which is just ending, abruptly and with no warning. In fact when the credits started I immediately let out a laugh because it caught me so off guard. But my biggest issue is spoilers I guess so be warned... The traps were unwinnable. Either the things people had to do to save themselves would have killed them anyway, or they weren't really given a fair chance to complete them. I mean that guy was having his fingers torn off, he was doing what he was supposed to and he still died. Not that I felt bad for him but still. And also at the end of the day no matter what he said the villian's motive was revenge, which is also why the traps were unwinnable. And that just didn't feel like the spirit of Saw. I know Amanda made unwinnable traps but she was punished for it. This guy kinda tried to compare what he was doing to John's philosophy but I didn't follow that. Anyway still a watchable film.
You completely missed the whole point of the movie. The killer never wanted follow John’s philosophy hence why he was labeled the copycat jigsaw. No connections to John Kramer whatsoever. Pay more attention next time.
This is the saw series. It's a continuation of it and bro Chris rocks performance will legit remind you that he isn't a comedian he's an actor it will let you know he's not just useful as comedic relief he's good in other roles too. He does offer comedy but he really nails the seriousness tone the performance demands.
Omg yes. How chris feels about the saw movies i feel about the purge. Everytime a new one is announced i get so excited then I watch it and go "well... that was fun at least". Like the world of the purge is so interesting but the movies are always just very average
I feel the same way about the Saw franchise. Same can be said about The Purge since that was brought up. Personally I think Saw might actually be a decent or a good series if they tried to keep the same style as the first film. In which the main trap itself is simple, yet leave a lot of room for psychological conflict and tension. With the more technically sophisticated traps being used rarely.
I can sympathize with a movie being a Sloth and Lust all the time. The Night Comes For Us, as great and entertaining as everything is to watch, the film is pumped up to 11 throughout the movie, especially the fight scenes, which are greatly choreographed, but feels exhausting. I can only imagine how the actors felt during those scenes.

Chris stuckmann is incredible at what he does. Can articulate very well and amazing at breaking the films down and the way he presents his points about the good the bad and the ugly about films is so so good
Can we appreciate that Samuel L Jackson in this movie. He’s been far back since Coming to America and then Pulp Fiction and entering in The Star Wars and MCU franchise and now an iconic Horror Trilogy. One of the best actors working today.
I Love that Chris brought up Phone booth it is a movie that is majorly underrated and is very effective in delivering a fun time while also maintaining tension. All the characters are believable. I remember watching it for the first time and not realizing how short the movie was because I was engrossed in the story.
I really enjoyed Chris’ character in Fargo. The comparison to Seven where the scenes don’t fluctuate is pretty accurate and I always felt the Saw franchise took from the Seven theme and just expanded it. Samuel J and Chris are just naturally LOUD people who always have an OUTSIDE voice in their daily lives lol 🗣😵💫
It’s like Predator 2 meets Seven, with the script and performances of a porn parody of a cop movie like Urethral Weapon, Boner Collector, or Come Fast or Die Hard.
You not having seen Fargo is like Arnold Schwarzenegger saying he's never worked out. You're missing out on more than you know and you're going to regret not watching it sooner. Too damn good of a show!
Dude this is one of my favorite Saw films now! Just seen it and I’m blown away. Highly recommend. My girlfriend liked it a lot too and she’s never seen any saw film.
i feel like when you get this many movies into a franchise there’s no way to please anyone… the studio behind it needs to commit to either sticking with the formula or make something new
That’s exactly the same thing that happened with Star Wars. You release a new film along with different ideas, callbacks, new characters etc and there’s no way you can please every single person with those elements. Almost every single fan has a different vision of a franchise which means they watch a film, read a novel, or binge a show with different lenses. Sadly, It’s something people can’t understand. You have to keep things fresh and when you run out of ideas, go back to the drawing boards and work it out.
@@nathanhills336 i think sometimes the problem is when they try to play it in the middle too much. Like last Jedi had some twists but it still never did anything THAT bold with the characters to justify its existence
@@lazedout8755 You’ve run into a Star Wars fan who likes The Last Jedi so I do disagree with your assessment. However, I would like to remain civil. I agree with you on Disney/Lucasfilm playing with something in the middle. There’s rules to creating new stories, either prequels or sequels. Does this create justifiable questions about what came before? What does it add to the lore? Questions to that effect. But I believe trying something new is better than not doing anything at all
it’s hilarious to me that when Chris was talking about the saw movies he likes he left out specifically the ones directed by the director of this new one

I love what you said about having moments to breathe. The unfortunate aspect of today's filmmaking is that those in power push for fast-pace and rushing to keep audience’s attention, but those calmer moments can elevate the tense scenes. You gave a great example with Se7en!
Gotta say, normally I'm all-in with a Stuckmann review, but this was off the mark, for me. Just saw 'Spiral' and I really enjoyed it. He was totally right about the tone, some of the acting was a little over-the-top, and the moments to catch your breath were there, just really brief. But the end really had me going. The 'twist' was good enough to carry you through the final ten minutes. And hearing the classic 'here comes the reveal' music again put a smile on my face. If you are a fan of the series, you'll dig what they did here. 8/10.
I just got out of it, Im a massive saw Superfan with two saw tattoos. Spiral was the worst film I’ve ever seen. Not just Saw. Worst film ever. Extremely protectable and completely taints what Saw means and stands for. I’m disgusted.
i went into the theater with this being one of my most anticipated movies of this year (and last year before it got delayed) and came out disappointed & underwhelmed. it was okay but had the potential to be great. it should’ve been 2 hours to really flesh out the characters and build up some tension and i’m with you Chris, it needed better direction. we needed a new director with a new vision that would compliment Chris Rock’s own vision. hell, they even could’ve gotten Leigh Whannell back to direct his first film in the franchise and help write. i really could’ve seen that working. damn, i feel so bad for Chris.
Not necessarily. If you have someone who knows what they’re doing and knows how to make a horror film that’s more than just the traps then you could end up with something great. I think that’s what they film needed by the sound of it.
I am not a huge horror guy, but like Chris said, its cool to see actors known for one thing do the exact opposite. I love Chris Rock so I am going to see how his serious acting chops are.
When my boyfriend told me about this, like the title, I really thought it was the Junji Ito story so I got real stoked, I do realize they already made a movie of that Manga story of his, but I was pretty excited. But I did always like the Saw movies, number 1 was always the best to me, but we'll see how this one goes...
Just got out of the theatre from seeing this movie and I appreciate your review bc it's more or less what I thought and felt about the sequel as well. I actually went into this without having seen a single Saw movie through and through (although I've watched all the Kill Counts on James channel) but you're absolutely right that there should've been more focus on the character development, mainly with and between our A-list actors Sam and Chris. As far as the reveal goes, I envisioned 3 directions the movie could have gone and ended, and the movie took one of those directions, but imo it was the weakest. But I'd argue maybe it only seemed that way bc of the aforementioned lack of character development and not so great pacing. Overall it is an enjoyable film and I think a C+ is a pretty solid rating for it 👍
Totally agree with you! I was expecting so much more. The first thing that disappointed me was the runtime. You just can't tell a well rounded story in only 90 minutes. I was expecting something much more like "Se7en", but we didn't get much of that. I did enjoy all the trap scenes, they were not too overdone. I liked some of the investigation and the mystery. But everything felt way too rushed. The final game felt so short and disappointing. The ending reveal was awful and predictable. I was waiting for a second "twist" but it just didn't happen. It was just such a let down because Chris had such an opportunity here, to make this film potentially even oscar worthy like "Get Out", but he blew it.
When you said "aggresively watchable", I don't care if it's a bit mediocre. I just wanna see me some 1990's style Psychological Thriller jumping on the back of SE7EN again. Remember those days when almost everyone tried to be SE7EN? I miss those days, I love serial killer/psychological horror stories no matter how bad they are.
another exceptional review without spoiling anything! This is how a review should be. That's why u r the most trusted source for films out here. Good callbacks on the phone booth and Se7en. I just wish James Wan had come back to direct one of these.
