A review of an interesting wire joiner with a story. A great Australian product made by a family business, the Spiralfast is easy to use and strong. In this video I check out a few of it's uses, find a few limitations and then subject the Spiralfast to a strength test with it's biggest rival, the Gripple.

Was hanging a gate at the cattle yards. At the time I was sure I had the quad bike with me. Scratching my head in confusion an wondering if one of the kids had pinched it to stir me up. I then looked across the paddock and notice a little 🐢 in the dam swimming around. On closer inspection it was the tyre of my 500 cc Honda. Moral of the story. Always use handbrake and don't be too quick to blame the kids.

that fence tightener out of a tree limb, was standard fencing when I was a kid. My dad was foreman on a 1200 cow ranch in central calif. I guess my experience was the day we were gathering cattle, and a deer ran across the field, we shook out our ropes and chased the doe, it jumped the wire gate and got caught up in it, just as we were close enough to rope it, the doe shook loose and ran off, but what didn't shake loose was that old wire gate. The good old days, I'm 70 yrs old now, so that was some 50 yrs ago, my dads been gone for 11yrs. Thanks for the memory. My whole life I've built alot of fence, and my father was the one who taught me. He always dug a deep hole and used a Iron pipe to tamp it with, he always tamped the bottom really tight, just using a little bit of dirt at a time, a good fence always starts with good stout posts. We never had dragging gates on the ranch, could open them off a horse. Keep up the good vidios, I really think that fence building is a lost art. Tim

We lost a round bail at the top of the hill and watched it disappear over the hill. We went to have a look at the first fence and we thought it had only stretched the top couple of wires but had in fact broken two poles off at ground level. The bail had also continued down the hill and come to rest in the next doors paddock, I was thinking I'd better go check it out, hoping it had only stretched a couple of top wires like the other one. Got down there and it had broken 5 out of the 6. As a complete novice at fencing I sat out in the paddock and watched a couple of your videos and spent the afternoon repairing a fence.

Hi Tim and others. I have purchased 300ac of land near Morgan SA and have 1.5km of new fencing to do and another 2.9km of old fencing to repair. I see the spiralfast wire joiner a great product for me for joining broken old fencing wire and not having to know any fancy knots. the funny thing......never fenced a thing in my life. Im a 60yr old city dweller.

We were fencing on a property not far from a small town. I was cleaning the spoil out from the holes a 3 ton excavator with an auger was digging. About a bit more then half way down the hole. I noticed a pipe on the side of the hole the auger had 'rubbed' while digging. I checked to see that the pipe wasn't broken, which thankfully it wasn't. We came to learn from the property owner the main water supply for the town of about 2,500 people runs through the property. And the pipe we almost hit was it.

My partner took our 2 year old down to the creek paddock to fix a fence , to keep the 2 year old occupied while straining up the fence he gave him a piece of wire and the bolt cutters and showed him how to cut the wire to keep him busy , so that done he went down the fence to strain it up and wondered why it was not straining up tight so moving down the fence past some trees sees our son very busy cutting the fence wire as he had finished cutting up the piece his dad gave him and informs dad he's helping fix the fence .

I can see how strong that spiralfast grip is and how convenient gripples are - however I learnt to tie all manner of knots very quickly and well back in the 70 and 80's when money was tight. Rarely use a gripple or two and still haven't opened the original pack of spiral fasts I must have bought over 10 years ago. These things are expensive and soon add up

I could tell the story about the half finished wallaby fence I climbed over, which someone had hooked up to the electric unit already. Coped it right between the legs and I hit the ground frozen in the same position as when it got zapped.. But a mate of mine, while we where fencing at the same company lost a 500 meter roll of wallaby/footer (thats 500kg) down a very steep hill. And upon realizing he had no way on earth to stop the thing, he just pulled out his phone and filmed it. That's a video that really deserves to be on RU-vid. At the end of the pasture it hit a tree and flew 10 meters in the air. The wire was basically unharmed but the tree was... yeah proper cooked mate.

I had a short electric wire fence / gate that I used to keep my dogs in the backyard. It was of a height where you could easily step over it, so I seldom actually *opened* the gate, I just stepped over it. It was probably about knee height on the top wire. One day, I was washing my car and had also pressure washed the concrete around the driveway and gate. The shorts and flops that I were wearing were quite wet also. When I stepped over the gate, the legs of the shorts made contact with the electrical wire and I got a rather surprising zap to my 'nads... Now, *that* will get your attention...

Thank you Tim!!! We found a few of these “magical” joins in our vineyard end assemblies and been trying to figure out how they were done for months! If Spiralfasts are as good as you say they are then we’d love to have a crack at using them ourselves! Keep up the great videos, as a new young farming couple we find them extremely helpful!

Oh bugga, wish I had seen the vid when it came out, I could have used this story for your entertainment. :) The flying Chippy: Years ago I was repairing some broken boards inside a sheep race, while bent over working on a bottom board I hear rumbling sound, I cast a weary eye skyward and see no clouds. Hmm that's weird I think, next thing I know I feel vibrations through the boots just before I get smacked in the butt by a very large Ram, of course I go vertical and do a neat twist and half turn to clear over the side fence and follow up with a picture perfect judo roll on the ground. (Ah the days when I was quick and nimble seem so far away now) My mates thought it would be funny to let a few rams into the race while I was busy head down bum up! ;) Cheers all, and thanks Tim for your great content pal

Thanks for another great educational video. I learnt how to tie fencing knots watching your videos and have since worked on a native grassland conservation farm with a 6ft predator proof electric fence where knots came in very handy. I’ll be recommending the spiral fast joiners to the manager as he would make me use a new role of wire rather than put a join in an electric wire, hopefully the spiral fast will solve this problem! Thanks again Tim

Asked my little brother to help me put in some new fence. I came back after about a half hour and he had put all the T Post in upside down. I guess you just don't know what you don't know. But then again he could have looked around. Good thing he can't drive a post very well either so they were easy to get out

I am a complete newbie to farm fencing, having only recently purchased my first hobby farm. My comments is completely unrelated to fencing, more to the strain testing set up. If you've not come across them already have a look at soft shackles. We've been 4Wding for many, many years and have more shackles in our kits than I want to consider. Recently we grabbed a set of soft shackles and had the chance to use them and they are an impressive addition to the kit. I'll be adding enough to the tool kit to make the shackles redundant (but will keep them as backups as you just never know, and why throw out something that is perfectly serviceable)

used a similar connector on HT fence we erected 20 years ago - at the time they were sold by Gallagher. Rather than the overlap you left, we cut the wires so the ends butt flush. I'll take a photo and send tomorrow. Still working strong in Ontario Canada.

Believe spiralfast's give a joint stronger than the wire it self while the "best" well tied knots are about 65 - 80% of wire strength is what I am told!

I've been using the cramps too 2 of them half inch spacing between them crimp and 3 times on each and then taken the ends and bend them over Using a quarter ton chain hoist in hoist to pull and haven't broke or had one slip yet

Does it work with any category of tensile wire ?? Looks like something I would use especially with the fence posts !! Well done Tim ! Funny test but it worked !! SF the winner !! I was digging a hole to replace an old post!! All going well until I pulled out the old rotted post and as I lifted it out of the ground a very large brown snake came with it...and was NOT happy....must have been sound asleep in there as the post was pretty loose. He calmed down after a few minutes and took off straight under my ute! I watched him having a good look around as it was still warm near the engine and then off he went !! I followed him for a few minutes and he went in search of somewhere else to spend the rest of the cooler months. We have a few reptilian encounters here near Mansfield and the best thing is you learn to live with them!!

A mate at Ag. College, who shall remain nameless ( Hi Alex!) went to jump a paddock fence which had two strands of hi tensile electric wire. Unfortunately his scissors jump went badly wrong and he got one leg through the two strands, and fell over, twisting them together. He was getting the full whack of the fence every few seconds, and no one would help him stand back up. It was a long couple of minutes till someone ran to the field boundry and disconnected the power :D

I tripped while stepping over a short electrical fence / gate that I use to keep my dogs in my backyard while carrying some groceries or whatever after having been shopping. I ended up getting tangled up in the electrical wire and was constantly being shocked. No one else was around to help. Then again, even if my wife had been around, she wouldn't have known what to do. After I had been shocked for awhile (it probably seemed a lot longer than it actually was), I grabbed the wire and pushed it into the gaps in the concrete so that it would get better contact with the soil, thus short circuiting it to ground. The electricity took the easiest path to ground (i.e. *not* through me) and I was then able to spend the time necessary to untangle myself without being constantly shocked. Something that might be worth remembering if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

Kind of seems like how we used to join two wires by bending them over each other and then wrapping the tails around each respective main wire. We weren't using high tensile wire though.
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire

It would be interesting to have a strain gauge and see how the various knots / bends / attachment devices stacked up from a lb-f / kg-f standpoint and also the value of a stretch of the same wire without any sort of connectors on it.
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 4 года назад
@@FarmLearningTim -- Looking on TractorSupply.com's site at the specifications for high-tensile electric fence wire, I see it at 12.5 gauge and a tensile strength of 200,000 psi. They list the minimum breaking strength at around 1400 lbs and if you plug the numbers in the formula (i.e. max-load = (diameter / 2) ^ 2 * pi) * tensile-strength, that works out to be about right (slightly lower than the calculation, but there might be a slight variance in the diameter or tensile strength, so they are giving a slightly conservative rating). Does your strain gauge go up that high?

Oh 2nd to watch this video 2 weeks ago and couldn't comment at the time? Mate I watch all you videos and take on bored all of your advice even to the point of tools I have even brought products that you have recommended (maun) The only story I have mate is I'm a fencing contractor and work in East Gippsland Victoria I'm open to try all new products and looking at the one your plugging here I was very hesitant and truly think a figure 8 will kill that thing..But like I said proof is the key right. As a fencing contractor and all my work is warranty work I might be willing to give it a go.Price is also up! and in any job cost down is the ultimate goal for the client and myself. As for funny stories I installed a High Tensile sheep fence with two hot wires and had four subies fitting droppers when NOT ME but one guy decides to reconnect the hot wire to test it and Yep hit all four people twitching the droppers at the same time..Bloody Nora! it was funny for me and didn't even know what had happened until they all came over and wanted blood! haha There was lots of talk of getting series revenge

Hey Tim I would love to see your solution to convert an electric fence wire spool (the ones that wires/tapes come in when you buy) into a working reel. I am sure it can be done but as technologically deficient person I have no answer - all I know is I can't work out how to build a brake to stop it from unrolling under tension. Buying proper reels is very expensive or cheap Chinese junk that breaks within days.
