Spirited Away's strange festival "Shimotsuki Festival" / Walk around the mountain village Southern Alps Shimoguri (Nagano Prefecture)
In Shimoguri, Toyama-go (Kamimura, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture), which boasts the highest level of heaven among the mountain villages in Japan called "Heavenly Villages," we visited "Shimoguri" for the purpose of watching the "Shimotsuki Festival" which will be held on December 13th. I visited "Sato".
The Shimotsuki Festival is a festival held in December (November in the lunar calendar) at each shrine in Toyama-go (Iida City, former Minami-Shinano Village and former Kami-mura), and is designated as a national important intangible folk cultural property. A kettle placed in the center of the shrine is decorated with a shrine, and water is boiled and offered to the gods. At the climax of the festival, tengu and other masks representing the gods of the village appear, splashing boiling water with their bare hands. The misogi water that is sprinkled on the water will wipe away the evils of the past year and give you a new soul to welcome the new year. This unique festival, which can be called a strange one, is said to have become the model for ``Spirited Away''.
Toyamago
Toyamago is located in the former Kamimura and former Minami-Shinano Villages of Iida City, and is located in an isolated area with the 3000m-class Southern Alps to the east, the 1800m-class Ina Mountains to the west, the 1300m-high Jizo Pass to the north, and the 1000m-high Seozure Pass to the south. It is a high valley. The central tectonic line that geologically divides Japan into outer and inner zones runs through the valley, and the shape of the valley is in its prime or late prime years, the mountainsides are steep slopes of 20 to 40 degrees, and there are very few flood plains. The origin of the name Toyama is that it was a general term for the mountainous region around this area, meaning that it was far from any surrounding country. During the Kamakura period, the Toyama clan, a powerful clan that held real power in this area, started from the land heads, and in the early modern period built a castle in Wada (formerly Minami-Shinano Village) and ruled. Toyama-go's Shimotsuki Festival, which is considered one of Japan's three most bizarre festivals, is said to be held to ward off the vengeful spirit of Toyama-sama, who had an unfortunate death. During the Edo period, the shogunate took notice of the area's rich forest resources and ruled it as a Tenryo. After the Meiji period, it flourished mainly in forestry. Regarding agriculture, there are very few paddy fields, and upland farming is the mainstay. Many of the fields are mountain fields, and are cultivated on slopes of 20 to 40 degrees, and although the slopes are steep, they are cultivated using contour lines known as jelly fields, which do not require the construction of stone walls. In the past, slash-and-burn cultivation was practiced.
