Spiritual Abuse: My Story In YWAM DTS

There are positive aspects of my time in YWAM and my time going to Nepal for
outreach. I am glad I got to see how people lived in Nepal and work with the churches there. It wasn’t all bad, but the negative experiences and control hurt my self esteem with working in a group setting like that. Like I said this experience didn’t harm my relationship with God or how I perceive God. I still love God deeply and am close to him, which I’m grateful for… Unfortunately these events of spiritual abuse can draw people away from God, when God wasn’t the issue.
I love you guys. I’m here if you need me. Just reach out to me. 💜 -Shay

Update: I reached out to other former students and volunteers of YWAM Chico and they all have similar experiences as me. It’s a toxic base, almost a cult.

Hi Shaylee, I'm Rachel. I'm so sorry you went through that awful experience with YWAM. I had spiritual abuse with the Bill Gothard cult, and have known at least three others who have gone through spiritual abuse with a Christian cult or cult-like environment. One if my friends went to Texas Baptist Bible College, and went through similar avuse as you did about sleep deprivation. They would make the male students out late doing ministry, and and then they had to get up very early a lot. Then they would sometimes humiliate the students in chapel in front of the others. A real nightmare. My friend passed away a couple of years ago, and i believe he's in Heaven wity Jesus. But knowing what he went through has helped me to spot abuse more. I know God loves me as well, in spite of the jerky stuff that was taught to me through Bill Gothard and his perfectionistic, religious nonsense. I send you love and joy. Rachel in Nashville 🐹🌞😺😺😺

Often we suffer by being offended by those who should really help and mentor us into being Christlike. Glad your healing. Forgiveness is possible one thing God is teaching you, and God uses us as " missionaries" whereever He or we self placed ourself in our life journey. God will use your talents for His Kingdom. As our heavenly Father we need to know Him by putting our hand in His and trust He will never leave us as we are His beloved children. Being autistic and doing a DTS tells of your zeal to serve God. God will honor your will to be obidient, even when you have a social challenge. God resides over a broken heart, and a broken heart is humble so He can use us iåwhen voulnerable and dependent on Him. Wish you the best. With love, from Norway.

Ok guys, here’s the thing, labeling all of YWAM as a cult because there was one base was very cult like and unlike Jesus, is not fair. That’s like labeling the church as a bunch of cult members because you went to one bad one. I’ve been in YWAM for my whole life (except for like 5 years) and it literally has saved my life as a Christian and is saving many many others all around the world. And I am so sorry that you joined one that was clearly not Jesus and super evil, but please don’t just label all of a YWAM as a cult because you found one base that was bad. There are thousands of bases all over the world in literally every single country and it’s truly life changing.

Sorry for your experience but I would like to ask , did you sign any form that you will partake in all activities , conform to their ways or culture ? In boot camps sometimes is worse than what you experienced. I know is a voluntary thing but when you sign a form you agree to everything going on then you have to try to follow up with the activities. If you can't in whatever way I think is best and appropriate you let them know . By the time one person starts faulting and they let it slide , it gives others license to behave the same way
@KJ-lb4tj
@KJ-lb4tj Год назад
Signing forms is the first red flag. If any church, parent, institution, or marriage asks you to sign any forms, go on the opposite direction. What the hell does form signing even mean? It's completely unbiblical. This is a church!! Not a prison or with any legal basis for any form signing. Church is about relationships... Love God, and others as yourself. Let your yes be your yes and every person is a child of God that can hear from God for themself. Honouring leaders means honouring leaders that act Christ like, serving others even to their own death. Jesus way of honouring his spiritual leaders and Rabi's - the Jewish leaders was to tell them they were whitewashed tombs clean on the outside and filthy on the inside.

Servants of God are soldiers ...you see the way the military trains...you can't give them excuses and tell them you are not feeling fine , you can't submit your assignment etc ...they don't want excuses.. I lived in Airforce base in Nigeria I have been woken up by 12am , I rounded up by 2am or less or more , I was asked to climb into the van so they can go lock me up just because I have not registered my name on the accommodation. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 sometimes no gatepass you are put in the guard room until someone you know comes to release you . When they call for clean up you better let them know or else ...God will help you ...people hate staying there and alot of people complain but I see it as a way to discipline oneself.

I’m so sorry that this was your experience.. but I definitely don’t think you should judge YWAM as a whole because there are so many different bases and each base is going to be different depending on who the leaders are. I’ve heard many stories like yours and it breaks my heart that so many people have literally turned away from their faith because of the spiritual abuse. None of it is ok but I want you to know that we live in a broken world with broken people. The church is so so broken but we have to remember that just because people are sinful does not mean that God has changed. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His children aren’t perfect, but He is!! Again though, I’m so sorry that you were hurt and wish you the best!!❤️❤️

Sorry, but the excuse of "YWAM bases are all different" is growing very thin. All YWAM bases must have some things in common, or else why do they have the name YWAM tacked on to them?
@Jakeknapp
@Jakeknapp Год назад
Actually, the fact is that Loren Cunningham admitted himself back in 1998 that abuse in the organization was "rampant and widespread". He was given suggestions as to how he could put safeguards in place, yet he turned a blind eye and did nothing for another 25 years. With young, unqualified leaders teaching terrible idiology, its no wonder there are now thousands of young people who have suffered psychological and spiritual abuse at YWAM. Now that Loren has passed, it's a shame that he never had to face any consequences. Just another failed leader who failed to act, while profiting greatly.
@Birds_and_art
@Birds_and_art 4 месяца назад
Yes, there are a lot of different bases, all descended from the heretical “vision” of Loren Cunningham. If you read his book you can know it was all his own egotistical delusions and he used the ideas to not only make a lot of money tax free but to use the time and energy of generations of vulnerable youth. I was in Ywam in the early eighties as a teenager and have read many of these stories and the abuse is nearly always the same. It’s an exploitative cult.

@calistaantonyshyn
@calistaantonyshyn Год назад
It’s really not a cult, it is just a very big organization which is good and bad. There are so many bases with so many different leaders which makes it hard to manage it and make sure that these things don’t happen. YWAM is an amazing program though, it’s one of the world’s largest missions organizations and their values are very Biblical for the most part. I’ve heard so many amazing stories of how God has moved in people’s lives who have done DTS. There are also some not so good stories like this one. It does break my heart that spiritual abuse like this is happening within the program.. but you really can’t judge their whole program off of a few bad experiences that happen over the thousands of good experiences.

@@bobsmith-hd2zr I was in YWAM for several years, back around the turn of the century. There is something unsound at the core of YWAM. Though they try to say that they are non-denominational/inter-denominational, the reality is they are strongly charismatic, and they are well into the looney side of charismania. One way this can be seen is by their partnerships with such places as the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, and with Bethel Church in Redding, CA. One seriously flawed part of their mindset is that they put greater emphasis on "youth" than on maturity, so they want to "raise up young people", but they do it in a hurried, slip-shod manner that doesn't allow for young people to mature before they are put into positions of authority. They very much reflect the current youth-oriented culture, where youth is cool but old age and maturity are seen as things to be avoided, or at least downplayed.

@@calistaantonyshyn A 'few" bad experiences? Try THOUSANDS. The only reason it can't quite be called a cult is because it has a decentralized structure. But it is absolutely a destructive, authoritarian organization with terrible idiology and unqualified leaders. Even Loren Cunningham admitted back in 1998 that abuse in YWAM was "rampant and widespread", and was given suggestions to put safeguards in place, yet he turned a blind eye for another 25 years. And all the while he profited and made millions while living on a tropical island. He was a failed leader who failed to act, and its a shame he never had to face any consequences.
