This guy who I've never heard up showed up on Thursday's California All-State performance. I'm like, oh. Another person. Then he frickin started playing and I got hooked. This guy's insane, and I'm glad I was able to hear him live.
I was at the All-State with you. I'm not sure if I was in your band, but I heard it live too. He was soo good. Just saying I was in Symphonic band clarinet. 5th chair
Wow man, I was instantly captured years ago when I first heard your version of Stand by Me you did in a cold alley and it's been great to watch your channel, techniques, and editing grow since then. This video is amazing! Keep on doing your thing
Who? Oh the Joker guy from the Tim Burton Batman movies. I'm not knocking him, he's a great baritone player, with dance moves and a sharp (?) dress sense, but he hasn't really added to the lexicon of sax techniques. Derek has, many times. I've never come up with anything genuinly new - Derek does several things that he straight up invented. Dyads, I think he calls them, completely new technique to my knowledge. And the mix up of techniques is beyond any other player. Take your pick, they are great, but what Derek is doing is new and historically important, as well as damn amazing musicianship.
Okay maybe I discovered one tiny thing. Play Low C with the D key off. You can play a C major mutliphonic - C, E and G all represented. A tuneful multiphonic.
@@marktyler3381 That multiphonic has been played before either of us was born for sure ;-) Also, if you wanna belittle every musician that hasn't come up with something new, but "only" is awesome in his field ... well, we'd miss out on so much great music. I do indeed agree though that Derek is freaking awesome, so let's just fanboy on =)
beatboxing on the sax is something i’ve been trying to learn for s decent amount of time now and you’ve inspired me to practice more and incorporate it into my playing, and i thank you for that derek great song by the way
You continue to put out absolutely amazing music and inspire me to be the best musician I can be. I love your playing so much and I wish you the best in life and congratulations on your new baby
Yeah Derek!! Heavy playing. Do you have the entire piece worked out, memorised and played as a set piece? Or are you improvising with moving different sections around in combinations. The ending feels planned as a climax. Really wonderful. You develop all the time!
how do you do so that when you tongue so much the instrument doesnt sound blurry and puffed cause when i play and tounge a lot lots of saliva gets on the reed and it sounds puffed and blurry?
sometimes its reed quality or the kind of mouthpiece since there are many different kinds, also by blowing hard enough u can clear saliva relatively easily
@@leonardorodriguez-fw9vu that sounds like a reed or mouthpiece issue, go to a music store and try out the other reeds and mouthpieces or look at ones that work for other ppl
If anyone wants a better rendition of this piece, I’ve got a live video from his 50 state tour, definitely had more soul. Still a great piece nonetheless.
