How was the Spitfire Mk Vs iconic Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine built? Here, we shall look at the Merlin 45 engine as fitted to early Spitfire Mk V aircraft. We shall cover the Rolls-Royce Merlin’s construction, and look at its components such as Carburettor, Coolant, Fuel and Oil Pumps, the Exhaust and Generator and ignition system. This in-depth story will be told using my many re-worked wartime AP diagrams - recreated in colour. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s dive in!
Thanks must also be given to the following superb organisations for their kind support when Bryan Atkinson originally developed The Spitfire Mk V Explored PC CD-ROM back in 2005, all are listed below and are included once again in this series of videos.

Spitfire Mk.Vb, BL614. Royal Air Force Museum, London.
Spitfire Mk.Vb, BM597. The Historic Aircraft Collection.
Spitfire Mk.Vb, EP120. The Fighter Collection.
Spitfire Mk.Vc, AR501. The Shuttleworth Collection.

Thank you for a great inside look at this aero engine , I found the connecting rod large ends quit interesting as to how the left and right sides share a common bearing journal .

I inherited my Uncle's service manuals for the Spitfire mk1 and I donated them to Bexhill Museum if anyone is interested. His name was Billy Wells. We may never see their like again.

Really good presentation Brian, such complexity I have known about the Merlin for years. As a petrol head I always use to tel me friends 26 litres V12, twin over head cam, four valves per cylinder gear driven. Wet liner cylinders and all supercharged. Overtaken by the relative simplicity of the axial flow jet engine. Keep up the good work.

Wow. Superb detail and I admit to getting lost more than once. The diagrams are brilliant. Maybe a suggestion? When you introduce a new term like dog or spline, float a little graphic into view to explain it? If it is just sitting off to one side those of us who already know it can ignore it. You have a unique genius for explaining complex engineering, Bryan. I can't thank you enough.

I've just discovered your superb series on the Lanc and Spit V. Completely absorbing and excellently done. Your breadth of knowledge is unsurpassed. Is there going to be one on the Spit Mark IX in the future? I guess the airframes are the same, just the longer nose to accommodate the bigger engine. Well done.

Great video. I am based on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain and am about to embark on the assembly of a Modelspace Mk V Spitfire kit. Having viewed your videos I can see that I will be dealing with a very simplified version of the Mk V but neverthelessI, hope quite interesting.

great work, I love the video. I have a question? What kind of protection does the spitfire have for the engine to shield it from incoming firing from the enemy?

The Spitfire V was fitted with a small half moon armour plate in front of the cooling header tank. Also, armour plate was fitted behind the engine in front of the fuel tank. Thanks for watching.

An extremely complex machine to design and manufacture, and all done by engineers with slide rules and brains, no computer aided stuff then, would be interesting to know how much of these engine parts are now remanufactured to keep the existing aircraft flying.

Hey, this is a rather niche question but I'm wondering if you have any insight into possible sources. It's all about power settings. The Mk I and II Spitfires with 100 octane were able to run 12lbs of boost with the boost-cut out tab pushed, however performance tests on the Mk II were run at 9lbs for whatever reason. The Mk V was initially tested at 9lbs in 41, and supposedly rated at this as all-out level. This seems bizarre, being lower than previous Marks, and doesn't make sense if a boost cut-out was still included (which I don't know). Much later on in mid 1942 this was increased to 16lbs, and the commonly available pilots notes seems to date from circa 1943 with that rating included. What I want to know is what the rating in 1941/early 42 actually, definitely, was. The absolute ideal would be if you know of any pilot's notes which predate the revisions of 42/43. Otherwise, do you know of any other good ways of finding out? So far my data points are: a single 41 reference to 12lbs being run in combat (might possibly be the takeoff power gate system, which only worked at very low altitude), surviving Spitfire Vs built in 41 including the cut-out tab (not clear if this was fitted originally), and simple common sense. None of that is really conclusive though. Thanks for your time and of course for the videos.
