In World War 2 the R.A.F recorded pilot officers in single seat fighters suffered fatalities due to not being able to open stuck/jammed canopies in their aircraft. When ditching, the aircrafts airframe could be damaged in combat or impacted by sea pressure on the airframe ,these jammed canopy events could take a turn for the worst quite rapidly.
