Splatoon 3 Big Run's Small End

i always thought it'd be cool to have like a weird, kinda messed up splatsville square for a while if we were to "lose". everything would function the same, but visually there'd be ink all over the place, signs/banners torn down, etc. it wouldn't be much, but at least there'd be something. the same could possibly apply to the "lost" stage. kinda messed up, broken, the battles would take place at sunset instead for a cool aesthetic, but idk.

To be completely honest, I think Splatoon fans have hyped this mode up way more than Nintendo themself has. The initial reveal was nothing super spectacular, but it was an interesting way to play Salmon Run on standard maps. Even the newer Big Run trailer didn't highlight anything crazy about the mode itself. I'm excited to play Salmon run differently, but all these fan edits of whatever will happen for big run have definitely skewed most people's mindsets towards the mode, in my opinion. So consider Nintendo's simple plan for Big Run as an event I wouldn't expect some advanced outcome like taking away a map or anything? Also, taking a map away could punish players who don't even get involved with Salmon Run or just provide incentive to throw games. (Like how Wahoo World would end up, lol) I think that Big Run will continue to serve as Salmon Run's method of receiving content updates every season. I don't think Nintendo had any alternative plans, and I didn't really expect them to.

"Does that sound a little underwhelming ..?" Not to me, no. I'm glad there's a community event where no one actually _loses._ If you want to just participate to have fun, then you can, and you don't have to worry about losing out on something. [unless you're just not able to play in general.]

I mean, yeah. There was no way that Nintendo would lock a stage behind Big Run if we were to lose. There would be so many people trolling trying to lock up stages, and the Splatoon 3 team probably doesn’t want a stage they worked on making being forbidden from use. Plus, imagine all the young kids reaction (yes, at its core, this is a kids game) to losing something like a Big Run. I’m not saying I’m not disappointed. I would LOVE to have a high-stakes event in the game where there are actual consequences for how we do. But, I always thought people thinking a stage would get removed for a bit had their hopes WAY too high. I don’t think it’s surprising that we can’t lose a Big Run. It’s Nintendo. Their target audience with Splatoon is everyone, including younger players. Btw, No hate to Rizirone. I love your content my dude. Keep it up!

Honestly, while I do agree that its lackluster, I cant really think of something to do if you fail. Taking a Stage out is Stupid, people will throw the event like they do with Splatfests. Why not instead make the rewards better, As Said, Scales or a special rotation (All Grizzco Weapons) perhaps. And if you fail you just dont get it.

I don’t understand why people are saying there’s terrible rewards. We are getting super sea snail, normal salmon run rewards boosted, scapes from kohozuna, locker statues, and banner badges. It’s WAYYY more rewards than splatfest I don’t see a problem

It’s definitely to much to ask but I was thinking that if we lose the map gets destroyed a bit. (Kinda like how pearl destroyed the bridge on that one splat 2 map but a little bit more damage)

Big run not being something we can "lose" doesn't surprise me for two reasons. The first is that it'd just be really hard to determine what the bar should be for winning or losing for an event like this, especially the first time. Next time maybe they can say that we lose if we don't collectively do as well as this first big run, but right now they have nothing to go off of. The second reason that's a bit more cynical is that I think the devs just don't like having players lose and focusing on that. Like all the losing animations from 1 and 2 are gone (which I do think is fine), and you can't lose your rank in anarchy battles no matter how far in debt you go (which is just weird). The only exception feels like the losing teams in splatfests, and they get a pass for being an iconic feature that's been around since the first game. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if part of big runs pitch was that it's a spatfest with no losers.

i always thought the best course of action they could take for losing a big run is having wahoo world for example be destroyed, changing some of the maps layout. however, this would cause people to lose big runs on purpose.

It's a shame that they're not using this as a perfect opportunity to update wahoo world. It would make perfect sense if the layout was changed after since it would probably take some damage from hordes of flyfish and their 1 million missiles.

Did people actually think stages would get affected by this? Like Splatfests don’t even affect gameplay. Why are yall turning on Nintendo when literally only the community built these too-good-to-be-true concepts and expectations. 😭

IMO I think it’s as valuable/good (idk if it’s as fun tho) because big run will have catalog multiplier like splatfest and also have higher chance and abundance of those good reward capsules you get by playing which I bet will be really useful for building your dream gear.

Personally, i would love it if a loss resulted in the stage becoming a salmon run map for a certain amount of time (maybe 2 weeks to 1 month).

I don’t really mind their being no fail . I just want better rewards like scales. Do we know the weapon rotation yet? it’d be cool if Big runs were all Grizzco weapon rotations.

I think they would end up adding consequences later, but not high consequences. What those will be I have no idea. However, for at least the first big run I think it’s good to have none. So many people have gotten frustrated in splatfest that i think it’s good just to host an event for the player base to come together and have fun. I would LOVE a high stakes big run, but it doesn’t sound like something Nintendo would do. This is a game aimed at kids after all. Even if the lore says otherwise.

I wonder if it will get through the Splatoon team's head that the playerbase doesn't like Wahoo World as it is, to the point that if given the chance they would have thrown an entire event just to either get rid of the stage or change it to a 'destroyed' state. ...C'mon Splatoon just open up the two middle buildings so it's no longer a bottleneck in the center! give us flanking options!! Why was it that only the Splatoon 1 maps got changed and not the Splatoon 2 maps?!

I’m not into the whole hardcore multiplayer aspect of Splatoon, and I’m one of those people who likes the series for its lore. I admit I went into the trailer thinking it was a much bigger deal than it was letting on. I honestly think fans have overhyped Big Run and overlooked the fact it was just a fun way to put a spin on Salmon Run.

the fact the only reward is a statue is so disappointing, scales would be a much better reward. they could keep the ranking system from salmon run and use it like the splatfest titles, where the higher rank means more sea snails. the higher rank you get, the more scales you earn.

Noooo I wanted to see if you reached 22 eggs or not. Jokes aside, I was thinking the rewards for each big run changes every time. maybe this is just the prize we get for our first big run, but still, it is kinda underwhelming that the reward isn't that big of a deal.

I haven an idea that could please everyone. I do want Big Run to have a bigger change in the game but just a visual one. So let's say we play on Wahoo now but we lose, well just have the multiplayer map be a bit dirty. Like instead of being prestine and white it'll have more of a light brown/yellowish color and it'll look like it was flooded by filthy water. But if you win then that stage will have like posters or "festive" decorations on it to show as a celebration of saving Wahoo. The changes wont be huge but they will make the map look either more fresh or more beaten up without changing gameplay at all.

Instead of a stick, perhaps Nintendo could go with a carrot. Imagine: a Big Run on Saltspray Rig where, if enough Golden Eggs are collected by the whole playerbase, it's added as a battle stage. (Of course, the Salmonid invasion would have probably somehow turned it into a Tetramino, but that's life.)

I'd like there to definitely be aesthetic changes to the maps featured in Big Runs, and they're a great opportunity for devs to change up the stage design if they've heard players' discontent with the map designs of S3 But it makes sense why they wouldn't straight up punish players and restrict content unless enough players played. That's kinda ransoming your players with content to play - and what if players failed a Big Run consecutively? Would two maps would be taken out? While some might celebrate if they hated the map being overtaken, casual players and especially outsiders to the game would raise eyebrows at either the way this event is designed, or the horrendous map design that players are cheering on a map being removed lmao PS: I'm still hoping for unique waves that only appear on Big Run. Imagine a wave where you're actually playing turf war vs the salmonids, or versions of ranked modes with the objectives given a coat of salmon run paint

This video does not touch upon the development side of things. It's a free update. Free updates are done on the cheap because they make no money. Splatoon's free updates consist of rehashed weapons and the occasional single new stage here and there. Why would anything change? Why expect anything different?

Wow that's painful to realise.. So every season one Big Run with only statue rewards is gonna replace what could have been a Splatfest.. Why not bonus scales as rewards and maybe even sea snails? I hope new rewards get added to this mode in the future or it might be a thing like this when the rewards stay statues only for each Big Run: "yay.. Another Golden Cohozuna statue.. Boy where would this one fit in my locker with the 5 other ones?" I hope it doesn't stay like this

It'd be so fucking weird if we couldn't lose the map, even if it wasn't temporary. Like, we fail a big run, Wahoo World perminantly becomes a SR or at least, stays a SR for a short time as Grizzco has to work to getting rid of the infestation.

Honestly I would of seen this coming It's an online game guys not everyone loses or wins it would be best case scenario really hard to implement something like that since big run operates very differently from splatfest I'm still disappointed that it has to be this way tho

No... Forcing players to participate in a mode to maintain access to content in the game is a terrible idea. Big Run having no stakes maintains players' freedom. Just let it have great rewards that diminish more that you die, let it be a timed event until the Squid Sisters or Off The Hook come and save the day.

I'mma be real with you fam, I don't care. As long as the game mode is fun I'm ok with it. Also if you did lose a map for a week it could be not great, it's ok now since it's wahoo but imagine it's hagglefish, yeah no thank you we already struggle having a couple of good maps, one less would make stuff even shitier specially for ppl with limited time

I'm starting to think that Nintendo genuinely does not understand the impact of Splatoon as in they don't even understand their own franchise. I genuinely think that Splatoon as an IP should be sold off to a different developer a developer that understands that splatoon's world is its best feature. Seriously I was hoping that if you lose a big run that map would be permanently taken out and forever become a salmon run map but no we just get a little stupid locker trophy that no one cares about. Edit: this is the kind of stuff that people are talking about when they say that Splatoon 3 is just Splatoon 2.5 all the additions are completely unnecessary and don't really matter (mild exaggeration)

Were you...expecting something else? It's not like it was advertised to be something game changing. It's just going to be a small Salmon Run event where the map is getting changed up. That's literally it and they haven't shown anything that should make you think otherwise. At most, I've seen people theorize that maps taken over by Big Run need to be rebuilt and gets a redesign, which I wouldn't be against, but also, we don't know if that'll happen.

What if we do "lose" And the Boss Salmonids end up as temporary Stage Hazards on the maps. For example one plays turf war/Splat Zones then FlyFish spawn on the map and disrupt the players.

I don't see an issue with the "winning" thing. An active online game like this will have a dedicated playerbase that grinds. But - and this is the issue I can see - why didn't they put some "false flags" in? All developers are aware of dataminers so even if the failure never comes up, it'd still be there so the "possibility" is thought of.

my take: yes the rewards suck, no our expectations were not born out of anything but speculation so it's only the faults of those assuming this to be "high stakes" or whatever that we are disappointed by this. we all know by now that nintendo is lazy, but don't get mad when they don't deliver something they never even said or really implied was happening
