Well, with Genesis games they typically have no experience with them and don't do any prep, so games that are quite good often look boring or frustrating.

That's a problem for most beat 'em ups, in that there's always some move that does more damage than the rest, so it gets spammed. It's more noticeable in this due to the timer, though. If you want your regular attacks to do more damage, and the spinkick to be nerfed, check out the Japanese version. The spinkick only does 8 damage in that version(vs. 64/80 in the US), and a 4-punch combo does 64(vs. 32 in the US).

@Vistar Abril For sure, the game has all these neat little nooks and crannies. One floor has a haunted piano room with this banshee that plays music and then screams and flies out of the room. Really scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it.

@@slaughterhouserock That's why I prefer the Japanese version, because what's the point of making your basic punches so weak as to be ineffectual so you have to rely on special moves? Plus the moves are harder to do in the US version. Also, in the Japanese version using Muscle Explosion drains your roid rage form faster.

@@potatortheomnipotentspud I agree for the most part, but I think the moves are much easier in the US version. I've never been good at pushing 2 buttons at the same time.

I am David. The original one who inspired this game. I got to play the 1st release in 1988 of Splatterhouse 1 arcade when my dad released the game to the public.

malestrithe the reason why he ever only picks up one is that the "breadsticks" attack depletes the power meter by one orb - except if your power meter is already down to less than one orb. Also, getting comboed so that you get thrown back depletes your health AND your power meter, and in Game Master difficulty, it is actually REALLY HARD not to get comboed. So, if you played normally, the power meter would go down WAY faster.

Also also, if you are mutant Rick and your health drops below 25%, you automatically lose ALL your power meter and revert back to normal Rick. I believe in Game Master difficulty, this threshold is raised to 50% health. You may ask why the game does that? The manual answers it: The Mask does not like to be worn by a weak loser.

Now i'm imagining Rick and the mask were fighting for control over unlimited breadsticks from olive garden. Thank you for that. 😂

Thanks! Take your time with breadsticks, you can do it surprisingly slow if you need to at first, then speed up as you get comfortable with the motion. Unfortunately, the Genesis d-pads are garbage, so I broke several when running this. I eventually replaced it with a Genesis arcade stick, the MK-1627, which has held up nicely. You could try one of them to see if it helps. As for the Stage 5 boss, if you get him in a loop, he's simple. If you let him run loose, your best bet is to jump kick, then go for a grapple. He'll likely hit you as he stands, though, but jump kicks do shit damage, so you should go for it. Keep in mind he will always jump towards the middle of the room if pushed/knocked down toward the side of the room. He will also always fire the ground shots if you're at a distance(you can stand still and he'll keep shooting at your feet and missing). Just keep at it and you'll get it. Good luck!

Yes, he's very predictable. If he gets in a corner, he always jumps to that spot you see me standing. Knocking him down there, sends him into the corner, so it just makes it a loop. The only hard part is getting it set up. I usually just do the initial grapple, then go for a jump kick to get him in the corner. It doesn't always work, though. He's a real pain in the ass if you let him run loose. To know where to stand, just look at the video and check where Rick's mask is. I usually just line up the mask with the edge of the pillar in the background. Makes it really easy to know where to stand. The only time you have to move forward is when he changes into his second form, because he doesn't get to the corner, which breaks the loop. If you move up and knock him down, though, it puts him back in it.

Lots of practice. I generally played for 3+ hours a day and this was after a year of that. Having a good controller helps, too, since Genesis controllers have notoriously bad d-pads. And I actually find it harder to do the Punch+Jump mechanic from the JP version as I always seem to press one button slightly later than the other.

Yeah, that's my speedrun of the Japanese version, but I have no idea what you mean by "normal version". This is the US version, that's the JP version, both are on Game Master difficulty.

Nice! Do you stream? I'd love to see someone running this. Indeed. I can't tell you how many times I've reset on the first two rooms. If one zombie moves the wrong way, it eats up a ton of time. And what happens in one room can change how enemies react in the next, so it's a domino effect.

Slaughterhouserock you may find it sacrilegious, but I'm playing SH3 on a CFW 3DS. ;) I had a genny and SH3 as a kid, but it got lost/sold over the years. As for my "run", I was able to get 3 minutes on the clock up to stage 4(Game master). Stage 5 still destroys me. Evil One stops his "jump into me" loops and shoots off his fireballs. The last Foul Beast room is a blocking/jumping mess. Eats up all my lives and time. Btw, your sda forum posts was a great help to this game I love/hated as kid(and still do as an adult).

I didn't even know there was a 3DS port. I'm curious if there's any differences. The Evil One loop shouldn't fail unless something changed in the port you're playing. The only time you need to move is when he changes to his second form. Then you move up to him, do the grapple moves, and move back to the original position while he's getting back up. If he gets loose, it's a fucking nightmare, though. The Foul Beast room is a pain in the ass, because it requires the first one to cooperate. If you don't land the jump kick at the start, you just have to wing it until you can grapple him and hope you have enough time to stay as Mutant Rick to finish things up. If you go back to normal Rick, you can still use the grapple method to make things easier, using two headbutts and a throw down, it just takes longer. Thanks! I'm glad they were useful to someone!

Slaughterhouserock Officially, SH3 hasn't been released on the virtual console platform. There is a homebrew community that has made great efforts to get Genesis/Snes emulators on the 3DS. SH3 runs extremely well. There are some minor audio glitches, but it plays just as how I remember it on the Genesis. I actually do move back a pixel there, but it's difficult to see. It's an old game and it's relatively easy to hit inputs fast enough that it doesn't actually start the character movement animation. Another example is the spot around 2:09. You need to perform it that fast at that spot, otherwise you end up grabbing the zombie and wasting time. That's really the only spot in the game where it's necessary, but fast inputs make for a faster speedrun, so I tried to hit it as quickly as possible throughout.

It's a bit weird, but the general theory is that the fight takes place in Rick's mind, not in reality. That, or the game designers didn't think anyone would notice.

RNG is an acronym for Random Number Generator. It's basically anything random in the game.

Lots of practice. I was playing this game an average of 3 hours a day for over a year at the time this was made.

That boss is a pain if you don't understand his mechanics. Try doing what I do here to get him stuck in a loop. Makes the fight much easier. Good luck!

When grappling, press either up or down plus jump.

Besides grinding for better RNG in a couple spots, there's no improvement to be made with known strats. Beyond that, I stopped speedrunning altogether due to being old and having pain in my hands. If someone else picks up the game and finds new strats, I might try it out, but my days of hours of grinding are long gone.

I play on original console with the actual game.

i would argue that while those were good games in their own aspects, Splatterhouse 3 was the best of them all for being the most fun AND for changing it up a little

I think this games has the same problem castlevanias had from Symphony of the night on. It's a cool concept and it works really well, but the indoors can get a bit tiring after a while, even when changing from one room to another, it's always rooms. Meanwhile in the first two you had dungeons, forests, lakes, etc. There are more open spaces and it's constantly changing showing some really interesting and creative places. Also the fact that you have access to such overpowered moves in SH3 makes the speedruns a chore to watch. I ended up skipping most of the speedrun and just watching the boss battles, and even those are kinda boring since you can spam your most powerful attack to beat them before they beat you. In that regard, SH3 is the most boring of them all.

The downside to speedrunning a beat 'em up is that there's always that one move that does the most damage and will get spammed. For example, breadsticks does 248 damage to normal enemies while a punch does 8. The piledriver on the final boss isn't used elsewhere because it's so slow, it otherwise does similar damage to breadsticks. It actually saves time there only because it cuts down some of the i-frames the boss has.
