Just wanna say, thanks for the arkham asylum video. After watching I bought the remasters and I'm very excited to play them. Wouldn't have known about them if it weren't for you.
I loved the video, i'm always happy when you upload a new video, and even if the game isn't the type i normally play, you always managed to make your rants intersting
About the pc version, if you like the game try the disk version instead of the steam version. Dunno what it is, but some of my friends were also frustrated when I introduced them to this, but I never suffered a single bug in S/S and I believe that's cause I had the disk version instead. Also, this video brought out some great memories. Thanks a lot bud :)
I'm currently working with fans to make a spiritual sequel, a free demo is on itch "Close Call", looking for people to help us play test and improve the game :)
I found this game when I was looking at old 360 games on the Xbox One store. I played like 3 seasons in one day and thought “holy crap this is fun” so I’m kinda sad it never caught on back then.
That stupid Red Dead Redemption game is part of the reason that Blur, Split/Second & ModNation Racers didn’t do too well in sells since they all came out the same month. People would rather play that western crap then play 3 fun arcade style racers? What a shame even today.
@@bremaster93what is this terrible take? they're both good racers but nobody wants a repetitive azz arcade game for game of the year, are you seriously questioning why people would play as a cowboy rather than a silent budget forza driver? Now that i think about it this has to be bait, no one can have that bad of an opinion, and if you actually do i refuse to acknowledge it.
I'm so sad we never got a sequel. Everything was perfect: soundtrack, graphics, cars, powerplays. Almost no one got the opportunity of experiencing this amazing game.
This is the definition of video game. Arcadey, avoids licensed real life properties in the form of cars and most of all, FUN. It's ridge racer with explosions.
When I was a kid I worked at one of those main street old theatres. They had this massive screen that they'd occasionally use to show movies and I remember that one year for my birthday I invited a few friends over and we played this game from the second floor and a movie theatre size screen. One of my favorite memories and this brought it all back.
Agreed - Marc Canham really hit it out of the park. He started down a different path on the music and then completely redid it to better match the energy of the game - and boy does all the effort show. My favorite part is the use of dynamic layers on Elite races. He talked about it in an interview with Chris Greening on Square Music Online. “impressive electro-orchestral soundscapes. How did you ensure the score was still compelling and catchy, while maintaining an explosive feel throughout? Did you intend the score for stand-alone listening or was it primarily composed with the context in mind? Marc Canham: I found this score very tough, and collaborated with Rich a lot more with regards to the programming elements on Split/Second. I started out down one avenue at the beginning that we all creatively liked, but it soon became apparent the score needed to be far more 'in your face' than what I was creating. The orchestration had to be simplified a lot to allow for the amount of programmed elements to take the lead and deliver the wallop that SS needed. So what was once a very orchestrally lyrical score become an onslaught of drum machines, meaty guitars, and some basic lead lines with the orchestra. At the end of the day, I totally think that was the best approach and was the right call from the developer for the type of game SS is, but it was a challenge. It was purely made to work with car engines and create lots of adrenaline, but if it works standalone then great. Not all soundtracks do stand up on their own of course!”
Steve Emney was also one of the main composers to this game along with Marc Canham, and if you didn't know, he was also a composer for the earlier Burnout Games, with Burnout 2: Point of Impact being my personal favorite. It's unsurprising that he would create a masterful soundtrack for this game.
Fuck yes I loved this game so much and I understand it had shortcomings but good lord this was a good time playing. Blur screwed itself by trying too hard with the marketing campaign. Split/Second, if I recall, barely even had one. And yet I loved every second of my time with S/S. I can't tell you why, but it was just such a breath of fresh air. And now I'll wait 5 years while you load post-patch Modnation Racers to review that next.
Guys! Just don't forget to apply a 60 FPS patch made by the community: community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1232-splitsecond-60-fps-patch/ By default this game is 30 FPS only.
I was 15 years old when I discovered this gem. And I remember that my sister(5 years old then) was watching me and even tried playing it a bit. She has never been a fan of cars, racing or explosions but she loved this one. And even now when I showed her your video she immediately remembered them good times. Truly an amazing game
That's because of the rubberbanding. The developers want to make sure that you can enjoy the spectacle, but for that you need another car in front of you to activate stuff. You need to get to first place somewhere in the second half of the last round, then the ai can't overtake fast enough (mostly)
Split Second and Blur are the two most underrated arcade racing games of all time. I'm glad I got to enjoy them during their short prime, before everything became forza horizon and asphalt...
Ikr... when I first saw someone talked about this game I thought it was made by EA or Warne Bros cause it make sense for them to make this type of game. But Disney? Damn that pretty surprising
The icing on the cake is the soundtrack intensity that changes for each lap. Especially the one for the Elite races. 3 lap race - 3 segments of soundtrack. Forcing the 2nd soundtrack segment to stop through a powerplay in lap 3, you'll get the more intense 3rd segment right after. It's exhilarating when you're at the final kilometers.
Nobody talk about the Graphics which are probably better than 90% of the games that are coming out these years? Game is more than a decade old but looks like it just got released on PS5 as a remaster
Well... Upscaled 720p with all its blur and lighting effects on an Xbox 360 or Xbox One do make it seem its pretty, but when you play this on PC in 1440p you will realize that it has aged quite a bit.
As I watched the Split/Second ingame trailer for the very first time, my mind was just as blown as all the cars, trucks, bridges, houses and fuel tanks after. Since then every reminder of it leaves chills all over my entire body. Still one of my favorite games of that time. Oh, and damn you, Raptor! Get rekt now!
It still hurts me the fact that arcade racing games released between 05-11 are dead. Blur, Split/Second, Burnout, FlatOut, MotorStorm, ModNation Racers, Driver are the ones I remember. Remembering these video game series someway makes me happy, giving me nostalgia vibes and bring memories about my childhood. Nowadays the racing game genre is Forza Horizon, NFS, The Crew 2, DiRT 5, and simulations. 7th generation consoles gave us diverse and best racing games. I wish we will see returning of the Burnout series in this generation, at least.
@@Tigran2142 Yes and no. Don't get me wrong, I freakin love Wreckfest, but it is very different from FlatOut. While Flatout is all out crazy action, Wreckfest is more tense and methodical, where you get heavily punished for every mistake. But Yeah, it still is sort of spiritual succesor to Flatout.
@@ileutur6863 No, it's still an arcade, it just has different approach. Flatout is just pure reckless chaos, it's great for what it is, but the game itself is not really challenging in any way. Wreckfest is still an arcade, but it pushes you to think before you slam into someone or before you make a risky move. And these aspects make Wreckfest way more satisfying imho. If you don't land a hit correctly in Flatout, you just reset and try again.
I remember the first time I played Split Second being demoed at PAX when I had no idea what to expect. That 3rd lap at the air port when the music cut and the air plane come down, I held my breath are ducked my head to get under the wings. It was incredible!
@@nkydn he's in the comment section I think. Do you think he has any footage of the canceled sequel he could send to me or something? I wanna do some analyzing on it
I would argue the rubberbanding was what pulled it together. The game would be dull if the AI didn't try to sabotage you on the way, and at the same time crashing sends you back a huge distance, especially in Elite races. One big mistake can send you from 1st place to a 7 second deficit to first place. So AI needs to be quick enough to recover from crashes to be a tangible threat, but also can't just leave you behind when they do succeed in getting you to make a fatal mistake.
@@SethAbercromby Some rubberbanding is fine sure, but I remember for this game in particular it was definitely way too much. Like I ran some races pretty much perfectly, first place throughout but still got overtaken at the very end because the car in second place was accelerating far beyond reasonable levels.
@@Underdrill yea i reinstalled it on pc a bit ago and realized the first half of the game is way more fun because you can actually win races with both your racing skills and your power plays. they def could've turned up the actual speed on the other cars and still let it be possible to pass them and have a bit of rubber banding without the pack getting all seperated. the level of rubber banding towards the end of the game has you constantly having to take out 2nd and 3rd place as they rocket past you while you're making great lines and drifts
Definitely one of the best racing games ever. Even to this day I replay it yearly, and whenever I play other racing games, I keep comparing them to Split/Second. It was far from perfect, but it stayed in memory like no other racer has.
I played this when I was 6, I’ve always wanted to play it again but couldn’t remember the name and I thought the cover was Need for Speed most wanted. Thanks for making me remember
this game was freakin' amazing, it was mario kart for the Fast and Furious generation, every race felt like the finale of an action movie, and by the end of the game shit got so insane you felt like outrunning the apocalypse at 200mph. a master piece.
Just so you're aware the X360 version still has players playing online racing, Small numbers like 1-2 rooms each day. Played each day last week, and this week. People still turn up to have a solid race. We can always use more players to have a race on Split/Second for Xbox. You can play it with One/Series S-X, very cheap to buy. Runs like smooth butter on all 4 consoles.
This game had one of the best action movie soundtracks too, I used to play the Elite races over and over, i loved how the Elite Theme Music would get more and more intense the more shit you blew up. Such good times, this game ranks as one of my all time favourites and I still crack it out ever now and then.
Fun fact or maybe two: the PC ending is lacking than the console counterparts which have ending in the full glory, also there is in pc no sounds from the AI cars and the consoles have the sound
Blur and Split/Second are both incredibly underrated games. When I got my hands on those I wasn't so thrilled and on the edge since Burnout Revenge and Flatout 2. It's a shame there are also no arcade racers like these today. Well... At least we have Wreckfest.
Closest thing we got nowadays is stuff like Grip, which no one wants to talk about for some reason. I would recommend Distance but that's more of a platforming-driving game but still a pretty damn cool experience
"I can confirm this game is playable with one hand... I won't be taking any questions..." I knew I was subscribed for a reason, I love this delivery and content. Well done, as usual, Whitelight.
Wow, I really was out here thinking I was the coolest guy ever showing my friends how I can beat them with one hand, but I always felt those that mastered speed control and laning, you can win any race 1 handed with a Ryback elite truck
The music was so good, u really feel like you’re driving through an action movie, I played this a lot with Bad Company 2, both had amazing sound design.
Always glad to see this game get some recognition. I'll never forgive Disney for destroying the studio and canning the sequel. Best time I've ever had with a racing game. The video also makes a really good point with the rivalries. After all these years after seeing Live Wire on the screen for the first time my blood began to boil. I fucking hated his ass.
And every lap after that, you drive _through_ the wreckage of that plane. This fuckin game. Sometimes I forget the name, but I will never forget this game. I wish I could play it again with better speakers.
Split/Second will forever be one of my favourite racing games to ever exist. Great driving, stunning scenery and absolutely amazing set pieces turned into actual gameplay mechanics. Thanks for the video, Whitelight. I love having any excuse to remember this gem.
People will never understand how fucking awesome it to have a plane and bridges crashing down into a huge explosion while you try not only to not get caught up by it, but also continue in the race. This game is easily a top 5 of all time for me, and my favorite racing game
YO The absolute joy I have that someone with your reach talking about my favorite arcade racer of all time is almost immeasurable. To this day, I still mourn Blackrock's shutdown. Maybe one day we'll see a sequel or spiritual successor
When this game originally came out, I had no money for it. I was a really small kid with an Xbox 360, and I played the Split Second demo almost everyday. Couple years after, I finally bought the game. Years later I still play this game, it is my most favorite racing game ever. Not because of nostalgia value. But because of the idea of it is just so amazing. Split Second forever
Honestly, dude your commentary is perplexing, and stupid entertaining. Good job i just found this cuz I remember playing the demo at a bestbuy when i was a freshman and did not have money for a console. 🤣
Amen to that brother! I still love to play the campaign even when the story was a bit shallow but the atmosphere....my god the atmosphere in that game was just superb. Just think about the catacombs on the spider island when you hear the distant screams of haunted ghost, just perfect!
Me and my dad used to play this game when I was younger, probably around 6-7 when I first started playing this with my dad. Life was so simple back then, I'm 16 now in my GCSE month. This is the most stressed i've ever been!
I remember playing this a lot on the 360 Dang this game has a lot of potential it would of been dope if there was another one might have to hop back on just to see if it's still fun.
A sad thing about this game is that it runs at 30 fps even on PC, and as far as I know the only 60 fps mods available create bugs with shortcuts and power plays.
This patch MAY be better. Can't really tell - I didn't test it myself but you can find in the description that they fixed the physics and power-up bugs: community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1232-splitsecond-60-fps-patch/
me and my older brother used to play split second and blur all the time in split screen. i still remember the day i brought the split second disc home. he was so mad that i didnt get need for speed hot pursuit or some known racing game. little did he know this would help us bond like nothing other. blur was amazing as well. i brought it after split second so he trusted me with this one. and later in the years, i had lost the split second disc so we couldn't play that so we played the heck out of blur. nothing brought me closer to my brother than these two games and im forever thankful for it.
Split second is still very alive. Ps3 xbox and pc still have active onlines. Pc has a lan and xbox and ps3 still have dedicated onlines. Along with an active discord that has weekly challenges
Whitelight has to be my favourite review channel, no matter what video he makes, I will always find a way to enjoy it. Im still preparing myself to watch the Death stranding video, just gotta find the right time.
i played it once when i was 11 and i could never remember the name. today i saw it again. i remembered the track so vividly. after almost 10 years, i still remember it... how did it flop ffs.
Gods I'd murder for a Split/Second 2. There's just some primal joy in speeding through the carnage, watching the power plays alter the fabric of a race in, well, a split second. If we're never getting more, I wish I could just play this game for the first time again just so the childlike glee of hitting the big red button could be experienced again.
This was a wonderful tribute to Split/Second. Amazing writing and narration as usual and it felt mesmerizing as a well read story. Here’s to hoping for “Don’t Forget Blur” since you mentioned their similarities, but different outcomes
First time on this channel and I am AMAZED how well you reviewed the game. Literally built my first PC in order to play this and to this day, I still find time to begin a new safe. Even though we won't see a sequel, I wish they at least included the DLC's. For some odd reason, true masterpieces tend to kill their creators and maybe this is what makes them masterpiece in the first place.
You don't have a clue how much I wanted someone to finally appreciate this game, or at least share my appreciation; now I can share your vid among my friends, such a good video
I used to play racing games with my uncle- split second was one of our favorite. He was in his thirties and I twelve, but we used to have huge gaming nights playing split second with one of us driving and the other co-pilot reading information. Miss that
Love this game. You should check out and make a video on Full Auto: Battlelines 2. The gameplay was super janky but the idea was a fun mix of burnout, spy hunter and demolition type car games. The weapon customization on the cars was the best part, it had some really badass stuff
God, I’m never forget my first race on the airport, me just squinting at the tiny dot on the horizon and screaming as I realize that tiny dot is actually a whole PLANE as I desperately steer out of the way.
Split second was a great idea, with some great execution woven in, but fell at one hurdle. it was a driving game where the driving, just wasnt there. the engine was mediocre at best and the ai were unbearably scummy with the catch up. I played this through and the resounding feeling it left me with was frustration. Frustration that there were so few tracks, and so many repeats from both repeat events, and restarts from runs where the ai would be miles ahead, with nothing you could do. I wish it was better, because they had the elements, but it's a game that's better watched, than played.
I think its problem is that it only has one difficulty setting. To me it was an amazing experience, the driving was interesting to learn, and the races remained intense without ridiculous rubberbanding. Seeing the tracks again was cool because I'd be "I know the tricks for these now!", or feel like I had more chances to get those satisfying explosions just right.
I played the demo of the airport a lot (30 runs at least), before I actually bought the game. I never really understood the amount of destruction you could do, until my 15ish run, where i choose to save the boost meter, and ended up killing myself to the plane because I was focused on the ground and didn’t notice the pane until it was right on top of me. Then what made me buy the game, (since I was a kid with little money) was when I discovers there was a third red bar event near my 30ish run. Where at the finish line you blow up the entire road. I’ve never had so much fun in an racing game ever.
