Why is it that people see god in lucky incidents and when tragedy strikes that let grace of god off the hook? It’s all random chance
@MCrider
@MCrider 7 месяцев назад
That is a great question and one I think about often. But, I lost my vision in my left eye years ago in an accident. I would not go back and change a thing. God met me in my pain. He has made me better through my bad experiences as much and probably more than he has through my good experiences. God is not my lucky charm as some would understand it. He is my rock in good times AND bad times.

I grew up in Washington DC and learned to ride at an early age in a very crowded urban environment- in 87' when we started a family and my wife said it was time to sell the bike- Fast forward to the mid 90's we'd moved to San Antonio Texas. all the back road highways were stoking my motorcycle fires hard again- She convinced me to settle on a 97' C5 Corvette as a bribe of sorts to stay off two wheels . We took the same roads I would ride on a bike every weekend but in the Vette with the roof off, it was as close as i could get to smelling the same sights and sounds i'd grew up with on my dad's old HD sportsters. One day we were on the stretch of back roads between Canyon lake and New Braunfels when a few bikers decided to see how fast they could ride with our Vette, eventually both riders on custom choppers were doing way to much speed and were a few hundred feet in front of us when everyone's worst nightmare was making a left turn in front of both bikes- The first rider made it by the elderly couples large sedan but the second rider hit them head on, we watched as the chopper frame separated from it's motor and was skidding straight towards the front of our car- we were able to pull off the shoulder safely but my wife ran to check on the rider whom you guessed it was too cool for a helmet- He passed and it wasn't until I survived my first heart attack 6 years ago that she let me back on 2 wheels - Safety is paramount if your a rider- Keep up the great preaching to these kids amigo'

Hi Kevin! 1st of all - I am really happy you BOTH are good, well and okay! 2nd - I do agree, McRider is actually the best place in the web for those who want to be a better rider. Now, let me (us?) know, if you had a chance to warn this driver (flash, horn)? And the least: had you started the time originally planned you would never knew what you had missed (this rear hit) - have you considered this? All in all - road strategy is being prepared for the unexpected. When I teach others, I keep repeat this: if you have 10hrs to spend on training, spend at least 8 on mastering strategy, and 2 on your skills. I don't know if you share my attitude here, but I think that at the end of the day it will always trun out, what really limits us is the time we can spend on particular job, hence it's crucial to spend it wisely, instead of wastey. All the best for you and your Wife! Marek

I have people ask about riding. Some just curious. Others that are thinking about it. My first response is 100% always..... "You have to ride like everyone and everything is trying to kill you". Some think im kidding. Im not. After 30 years this is the probably the most important thing ive learned. I love riding. But we all have to be on our toes out there. Ive come within inches of car collisions. Deer collisions. If i hadn't had seen those threats soon enough. Id probably not be here. Ive ridden with people and seen things possible threats and ive asked..... "Did you see that?" And they've all said no. I thought wow? Ok? Man i know i probably won't enjoy the scenery as much as some. But im not out to gawk at things. Its just how i ride. God is great! Ride safe. 🙏

I ride the same way; not that everyone on the road 'could' kill me, but that they are 'trying'to kill me. This might sound like it takes the fun out of riding, but it truly doesn't; I am just acutely aware of what others are doing around me; I still thoroughly enjoy the ride. In 40 years of riding, I have only hit one deer (avoided many more) and never had an incident with another vehicle, I believe because of my awareness, though I have had some somewhat close calls. As another RU-vidr says, "Stay vigilant".

People who do not ride often project their car experience onto our riding experience. When they imagine a head-on collision situation like yours, they conclude that the MC rider is toast and that they have a good chance of survival in their car. I inform them that MC riding is not the same as driving a car. Yes, we must escape to survive where they might survive the collision, but our escape routes are often better. I had a similar close call as yours. I had to put the bike on the white line, but that was easy and without panic. In my case, it was a passing car whose driver probably just didn't see me or didn't judge my distance correctly and needed more time to get back in. Had I been in my car, I would have needed to put two wheels on the grass embankment which is a bit dicey. Thanks for your training videos. I share your perspective on riding. It's nice to hear your responsible approach that's not too dogmatic nor hooligan as so many are on YT. Your comment on God's providence is well put. Every day we live is His mercy to the just and the unjust. We should take the advantage of the time to stop opposing Him and submit to Him in His provision of a substitution for us. We can't save ourselves from His judgement. He provides the only escape route.

I have Lee Parks Design SUMO gloves as well and love them. Thanks for freely sharing your knowledge and experience for people like me, and new rider in my 6th month, and others. Let me be clear, after hearing the entire video, it was not a fictional being that saved your wife. Whos to say if she had been there that she'd have stayed in the lane and not pulled off the road missing the truck? Saying 'god saved her' takes any credit away from her and her decision making abilities. god didn't save her. you can't guarantee things would have gone that way if she was behind you...and it also discredits all the people that do get hit by drunk/intoxicated drivers. Are they not good enough for gods intervention? It's a silly loophole and one I wish people would stop using. Be prepared and alert and make the best decisions you can and you just might dodge some things. Any relying of a fictional being to save you or help you in a time of need or believing there was some divine intervention is folly.

I'm sure all long term riders have had miraculous redemptions. I've had many, make that WAY TOO MANY. The most terrifying was going airborne due wind gusts in a mountain pass...I was literally lifted bike, myself, and a girl and carried several seconds then set down on the shoulder inches from the drop off of at least a 1000 feet. Pretty much have to categorize that as Divine intervention.

I hope you also called the police to report the truck, possibly saving someone else's life further down the line. I've experienced a large commercial delivery truck suddenly swerve over completely into my lane on a tight bend. I had maybe two feet of rising sloped gravel to escape into. Beyond that the ground was a vertical wall. The bend was blind for the most part but I entered it on the outside so I could see into it as much as possible. That saved me. Still, I had to respond in a heartbeat to avoid a head on. I was concerned about losing it in the sloped gravel and sliding under his wheels as we passed one another. I kept it under control though and all ended well. I had video so I reported the truck with plate number. I also phoned the company and sent the video to his manager. It's important to try our best to maintain good riding habits 100% of the time.

Yup sometimes I wonder through what magic do I get out of trouble alive from some situations that are near impossible to get out of......And it might be road strategy or decades of racing and driving and riding......or it's still god giving me a pat on the back and saying: "It's not your time yet!".... Because in my case I should have died so many times, a cats 9 lives is just not enough for me.....and yet I still live hoping for a nicer outcome to life's journey. Just to number a few: 4 compeltely obliterated cars that were just hang on together by "glue", and coming out of them with just a scratch on my hand and some windshield bits in my nose and mouth (even the marshals and ambulance drivers weren't thinking anybody would be alive), loosing wheels in the twisties, loosing completely the breaking system at high speeds and needing not to hit a wall or off in the gorge...... Yeah, there is a guardian angel around in my case, and probably the copilots and passengers.....besides every stunt and skill and know how......

Spooky. Would it have been possible for you to "pass" him in the left lane (his lane) and avoided the accident that way. One thing that all this motorcycle road strategy training has done for me is to make me a much better "cager" driver. While driving my car or PU truck, I think like I'm still on my bike, I look ahead and plan for the "what if's" I might encounter while driving. Besides a lot safer, it makes driving more fun and interesting too, like you are playing a game with yourself. "A game of life and death," to coin a phrase.

Had you been squeezed off the road and injured, we might have mused how other options may have been more prudent. The fact is, your longsight awareness and road strategy were based in sound experience, and proved successful in this instance. In those moments, any egregious moves from the truck driver could have been a disaster for you. This would have been (and certainly was) out of your control. Awareness, experience, strategy and a little luck paid off handsomely. You did not panic, made a riding choice and rode it out. This would still have been valid even if you had ended up in the ditch. Glad you didn't!

I know some of you might think I sound like a skipping record, but with over a half century of bikes under my belt, I’m looking up ahead as far as these eyes can see. A couple of years ago I had a similar experience. I was on a busy two lane road headed home when up ahead something didn’t look right to me. I really tuned in to figure out what it was that had me concerned. It actually took a few more seconds before I realized there was a car in my lane! I was absolutely shocked and immediately rolled off throttle. I had been doing about 65mph and quickly slowed to about 45MPH while trying to figure out what was going on. As we drew closer together I realized this car was trying to pass about eight to nine cars in his lane. It started to dawn on me that he wasn’t gong to make it, so I continued to slow to try and buy some more time. Unfortunately my options were extremely limited. Just off the side of the road is a ditch that’s filled with about two to three feet of water. (Not uncommon around here) Fortunately this road had a shoulder which is quite unusual in Florida. So what were my options? Obviously I couldn’t veer left as that lane was full of cars he was trying to pass. If I went right off the road things would be almost as bad. I’d have dropped down immediately into a sea of water. What I did was to continue to slow and slide out onto the shoulder. By the time the car blew by me I was doing 15-20MPH. I could literally feel his side view mirror’s wind as he passed. I’m guessing he was well over 80mph at this point. It was the most unnerving experience I’ve had on a motorcycle. As far as I could tell the driver was completely nonplussed and kept right on going. I’m not sure I’d have survived a dip into the water off the side of the road. And I know for a fact I could not have avoided this situation in my truck. I’d have two choices, a head on crash or a severe crash into the watery ditch. I have thought this over again and again and I see no other options than the one I took. One blessing was that there was no one behind me. Again unusual on this busy road. A car behind me might have rear ended me and certainly would have been involved in some sort of crash, either head on or with the ditch full of water. God was definitely looking out for me that day. It’s the only explanation.

I am very puzzled that you chose to continue riding toward a vehicle that had already shown itself to be such a severe danger. I would have been very inclined to stop and pull way over, park , and probably dismount. I have seen inebriates approaching as you described, and most all vehicles approaching him stopped and pulled over.

Kevin, I am glad that nothing happened. But you should have used your bike's horn, blinked your lights and not count with the driver getting back to his lane, by reallly slowing down and pulling out of the road way before, if needed. Not believing in the trick driver's mistake right from the beginning took many of your options away, as you were still progressing towards him in "high" speed, and this could have killed you, as you know. Once you saw the sign that something was not normal, you had to react in emergency mode right away, not just continued to see what would happen. I know it is easy to say this after the event, but we must be highly reactive in such situations as riders. Here in Brazil we must ride this way all the time, as people driver crazier and as we also have security concerns in not getting our bikes stolen at gun point in some of our bigger cities. Glad you are alive. I learned so much of you these past years, would be a shane to lose you this way. 😅 Abraço.

@garymaclean6903

There are many people who get themselves killed every day in highway accidents. Many of them were believers too. That you managed to not get killed isn't any sort of evidence that a loving god favored you. If there truly is a loving god, he would have also protected those many other believers who get themselves killed each day. The fact so many others get killed is just as much, if not more evidence there isn't a loving god... Our safety is our own responsibility. What I get worked up over are 'teaching sites' (other than yours) which purport to teach 'safe riding', while showing such things as the best line through corners so you can maximize your speed. The riders in such videos are typically riding at tens of mph above the speed limit. Even in high traffic urban areas they're well above the speed limits, and frequently lane splitting while traffic is moving. Safe riding is totally about defensive riding techniques. Yes, a rider needs to know and practice basic skills like safe panic braking and low speed cornering, but the real dangers are the other drivers who typically fail to see them at intersections and when changing lanes. Speeding in such situations only increases both the likelihood of getting hit, and the potential severity that hit will have on your body. This is the mindset that needs to be reinforced when teaching motorcycle safety. I also believe better Drivers' Education would help, along with mandatory re-education and driver testing every ten years or so of drivers who have multiple infractions. Fines for traffic infractions should increase exponentially for repeat offenders, with license suspensions after multiple infractions. There are far too many poor drivers on the road, and not enough is being done to fix that.

I think there should be an age limit on how old is too old to start riding. There was just a story on the Vegas News where a 50+ woman, on her first motorcycle, hit a wall and killed herself. There are several problems with this. One, she was just kind of learning to ride. Two, she was just kind of learning to ride a motorcycle. (I separate these two items because it is one thing to know how to get the thing to go forward and stop. It is quite another thing to manuver the thing.) Then there are the infinate variables of traffic, turning left, turning right. And then there is the reaction time of a 50+ year old person. I don't know what exactly happened in this case so I will hypothasise. You get a new bike, you are all giddy about it. Somehow you get it home. The next day you get on it and try to find the key positioin to light it up to get it ready to start. You find neutral and start it. You find 1st and get it turned around and headed out your drive. You look both ways on your low traffic side street, and proceed down the street to a stop sign by a main road. You remember to pull in the clutch so you can brake (or you stall it out). You watch for traffic and pull out into traffic gathering the things you learned in riding school to clutch and shift. Now you are doing the speed limit of 35mph. Suddenly you come to a sharp curve in the road. Do you pull in the clutch and brake, do you down shift, or do you panic and try to put your feet down (while still doing ove 30mph) and go straight into the wall? When we were young, we did all kinds of trial and error in a field, trail or somewhere without much traffic. Dealing with traffic is a lot more complicated now and a younger person can adapt. An older person tends to pause between decisions to move/manipulate. Sometimes you don't have time to contemplate, you have to do things by reflex. On a new bike, everyone has to learn the machine even if they have been riding for years. But to learn to how to manipulate a bike as well how to deal with the road would be daunting. I'm sure you don't even think consiousely about when to pull in the clutch to break or shift or when to shift. As far as when to shift, it is all dependent on what you are doing, the grade of the road, do I have to stop, etc. but you don't think about it, you just do it.

Very glad for everyone this turned out how it did. It's critical to maintain a set of honed skills and road strategies for each high-probability encounter that will likely be fatal - oncoming left-turning cars at intersections, oncoming cars drifting into our lane, etc. My escape route is to go full countersteer left and if required, bail myself off my bike onto or past the right shoulder. Not hitting an oncoming o ject is the first goal, not hitting an immobile object is the second, and the least worst is to have to bail off the bike after executing the full countersteer. To ensure I'm trained for this, I practice doing some full-lock left countersteers every time I go out. At first they seem impossible but after a while, they become very normal and confidence inspiring. I now know just how hard the bike can be pushed to trun radically, which is much harder than we believe. I also have this procedure in my muscle memory and am always looking for oncoming "drifters", as I know I will only have a moment to get my save done. I recently had a situation where I was following a little old lady up a mp7ntain road and thankfully had settled in behind her at the speed limit. Coming down the road toward us was an open-bed 18-wheeler. All of a sudden, a new white Escalade came rocketing past the truck in our lane toward us. Luckily the little old lady saw it and started to pull over to the edge. I saw it all and went for the edge. The Escalade barely ducked into his lane in front of the truck as it passed us stopped on the side. I'm a paramedic and I've seen a lot of bad motorcycle accidents I've also been riding for 60 years myself and have had a few bad accidents and close calls and my best friend was killed on his bike in 1985 when a drunk driver pulled out in front of him. So i am well aware that my next ride could be my last so im always looking for escape routes when im on my bike unfortunately there aren't always there. One more thing this may sound off the wall but you look just like my uncle Tommy lol

Praise God! Sometimes, we get upset when things do not work out how we want them to, and it takes God showing us why the plan was changed. God is truly amazing in all ways. I'm so happy your wife did not go on the trip, and you both are safe. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for spreading our Fathers name to people.

I've thought about that scenario often -- either with me in a car or on a motorcycle -- going along like you were and seeing an oncoming vehicle drift into my lane. At what point, if any, would I decide the oncoming vehicle is too far in my lane such that a collision is inevitable. Would I ever decide that the best course of action would be for me to go over into the oncoming lane to avoid the vehicle in my lane? I can think that I might. But dang, if the oncoming driver finally came to and swerved back into his/her own lane, I'd be dead meat (or meet, as the case may be). And then the collision would be 99% MY fault. I can only hope that it never happens because, even having thought about it, like now, I still don't know what the best action would be!

In the spiritual sense, to believe God spared you by inches requires you to believe that he sent the truck into your lane in the first place, kind of a heavenly (two for flinchin'). Good stuff happens. Bad stuff happens.
@SlipperyJack60

I'm confused as to why God saved you from the impending accident when it would have been easier for God to have prevented it happening in the first place. Instead of the convoluted rearrangement of your travel plans, wouldn't it have been more straightforward to keep the other driver in their own lane? I'm not being snarky, it just seems more logical to this non believer.

Definitely glad your ok,i stopped riding 2 years ago because of something similar. I look back at what i did and should have immediately stopped or followed the truck and got plate and notified police as to save another life and maybe the truck driver. Safe travels to you and all riders.

If we don’t go out and continue to do the things we enjoy in life, then in my opinion it’s not much of a life, I had a couple of close calls a few years back with oncoming traffic coming into my lane, it caused me to sell the bike and give up riding, but the joy I get out of riding as pulled me back ,just purchased another bike and I am back at it, well when the weather allows here in Newfoundland LOL, take care and be safe to everyone who loves to ride Eric

Sounds like the driver of that truck was dozing off! And falling asleep while driving is always a HAZARDOUS situation. Thank GOD that you and your wife and family's lives weren't devastated that day! And you're right! The 3 things that protected you are Skills, Strategy, and the Grace of GOD! And since it was GOD who gave you the ability to develop the skills and strategy, HE deserves all of the credit! Stay safe out there!

I am very happy you were ok, but I have a question, at any point if you had seen the driver and could determine what was going on when that truck was fully in your lane could you have just moved into the oncoming lane and throttled fast as possible past the truck.

Thank you Kevin. I have no doubt that God does intervene and cares about us. Sad that so many want to deny God and put their faith in random chance. But that is the result of God giving us the right to accept or to deny him. As Tatian said, "our free will has undone us". Love your video's.

I know exactly what you are talking about. About four years ago I was going to Canada by myself on a goldwing and I was riding on a road exactly what you was talking about. I saw an 18wheeler coming in the opposite direction long straight stretch no other cars in sight so I thought. As I was getting close to the truck a car pulled out to pass the truck. I had no where to go. If I had gone I would have hit the truck head on if I went right I would have hit car head on. I was on the brakes hard anti lock going crazy. What kept me from hitting the car was he went off the road on my side of the road. Needless to say I was shaking in my boots.

On a recent road trip I had an 18 wheeler in front of me in the right hand lane with another 18 wheeler in the left lane on a downhill. Suddenly the distance between my motorcycle and the truck in front of me quickly reduced when I realized that the truck must be braking but no brake lights were coming on. It turned out that the truck was not only braking but starting to turn right crossing a busy highway with no indicator lights signaling his intention. By the time I realized what was going on I had to take action quickly to avoid crashing into the rear of the truck. With the bike heavily loaded on a downhill sudden braking to avoid an accident wasn't an option and the truck in the left lane was quickly catching up with me when I had to make a split second decision to accelerate to get ahead of the truck in the left lane and steered to take a very narrow gap between me, the truck in front of me and the truck in the left lane and just managed to squeeze in front of the truck in the left lane and so doing avoided crashing into the truck in front of me. So used to rely on indicator, brake and tail lights, probably best not to.

It's great that you were able to avoid a collision, but I can't help but wonder who that driver may have encountered after you managed to avoid him/her? I think I would have been on my cell phone to at least report what and where this happened along with everything I could remember about the truck to the local police. Someone else's loved one may not have been as fortunate or as prepared as you were.
@Colwood22
@Colwood22 7 месяцев назад
Fortunately you're ok and I bet the driver was impaired somehow, could you imagine this happening on a blind corner, as this was the case of a friend of mine and he dove off the bike as he had no time to react and swerve, lucky for him he was going slow enough that he slid off into a ditch as the car hit his bike head on, the only thing I would have done to avoid this is slow down in the twisties and hug the right side of my lane and being on an adventure bike swerving into a ditch is an option. But my buddy was on a big cruiser and was probably in the middle of his lane not expecting that situation, but in motorcycling always expect the unexpected!

Two thoughts on this...easy for me to say with 20/20 hindsight, but I'm thinking if I see that situation approaching, I'm going to slow down enough so that I can stop and get off the bike if it looks like the oncoming car is going to stay in my lane, and I'm going to do a lot of horn honking and high beam flashing at the oncoming car. Again, easy for me to say with the luxury of armchair quarterbacking, and I don't know how much time you had to analyze the situation. Glad you are OK, and thanks for another great insight.

@@davemiller1007 At 75 MPH I can't even hear my own horn over road noise.. Plus the button is award to find. So one night coming home late at night on Rural roads I honked my horn every time there were deer near the road. Trying to develop Muscle Memory. I saw groups of deer like 15 different times in a 40 mile stretch .. Best to not ride over the speed limit at night . At night I will follow a car from a good distance. Cars have better side lighting and I can watch for deer with the cars headlights before I get to that point. It gives me a lot more warning time to stop .
