Have never rented one, purchased one used many years ago and traded some work for another. On Wednesday I received a commercial log splitter that is so much fun the buying tears went away quickly!

Congrats on the pro splitter, happy for you. The speed alone should be an amazing site. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

What a great topic. Before Wolfe Ridge arrived in my life, i had a few who wanted me to come over and split their firewood. I turned them all down as it wasn't worth my time or their cash in what i would be asking. So when it came up to the decision to go to a pro splitter that thought of renting it out did come into mind (but not full-time). I now do 5 splitting jobs a year, and you get your money worth for what the machine can do..😉👍

You have a great point, Dan. I've been contacted before about doing mobile splitting (and bucking) and I could charge an OK rate it's time. But that's with my Champion v a pro splitter so a big difference there. Thanks again, keep cuttin'.

Great Video Travis. I think there is definitely people that would benefit from renting a splitter. Everyone's situation is different and just have to go judge it on your personal situation.

I rented for years because they company I worked for had a rental division and I could rent for almost nothing. But.... it's a huge pain in the ass because if you rent for a weekend you have to do nothing else all weekend except split wood. You can get much more done if you have your own available 24/7 and want to split for an hour or 2, it's amazing how much you can get done in an hour here and there. So yes renting makes more sense if your wood is ready and you can devote the time. If you want to be more leisurely, then for sure buy your own

Also, a used splitter around here, unless it looks like it was hit by a train, is the same money or more than a new one. It's insane

All good points Chris, well said beyond what I mentioned - totally agree. Did your rental company sell their used splitters too when they wanted to get new ones, curious? There's pros and cons, hoping this episode helped a few folks. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

@@travisdoesfirewood they did eventually sell them Travis, but they kept them for a very long time, and usually had a waiting list for the next ones to be sold

Yo Travis! Great video! Renting a splitter I’m sure works for the weekend warrior that needs a splitter maybe 2-3 days a year. Keep on splitting!

Agreed, Tony. No point in letting the splitter sit under a blue tarp for 360 days of the year. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

I agree with all of it but I’m going to add to it. If you need to build a little credit get a 6 month interest free loan and split to pay it off. 5 cords at $325 per will do it. I love that the splitter is in my shed whenever it’s needed by family or myself. I bought a splitter to split 4 oaks I took down in my yard then discovered the therapeutic benefits of cutting and splitting. Now I split for healing my mind and making Christmas money for the family. Dropping trees is one thing I love but knowing they are not going to a dump makes it rewarding. Don’t forget that the wood you split warms you twice so it great exercise also. Fun show thanks

All good points, my friend. Using the firewood money earn to pay off or purchase new equipment so that you're more efficient is key. And the mental benefits with physical does help when you're outside cutting and splitting, and I guess there's research that shows that. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

Good video. I think for a mechanically inclined person looking and buying a nice used splitter from Craigslist or market place may get you a splitter for the cost of a week or two rental alone. Keep the info coming lots of people appreciate it.

Volume of need is one factor,Second species needing split,Physical ability is a MAJOR factor . What also should be figured in is electric or gas,Gas requires maintence and storage,Electric splitters are small and slow but nice for all hour use. Another options is to group of friends or family all buy in and every one gets use and maintence is spread out.

You've hit a few additional points, Scott, well said. My brother's gravel road of neighbors have a joint splitter, apparently, but one neighbor hoards it and leaves it outside in the rain - ugh. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

I think the average homeowner burning wood could benefit from renting or borrowing a splitter. Most times home owners buy their wood already, split. A supplier would never rent or borrow unless it was absolutely necessary. That's the way it is around here.
@travisdoesfirewood

That's good insight, thank you for sharing. Definitely one aspect I didn't think of. Keep cuttin'!

It all depends on if you burn wood for the main source of heat or if your doing it every once in awhile. Me personally I burn 6-8 cords a year. Plus I sell 50-60 cords a year. So its easier to buy it

Amount and duration are the key. But there's a third option, hiring. I see a couple RU-vidrs do it. One in NC other here in NY.
