Why didnt he just roll log over and cut other side with chainsaw too since he was over half way through log

How NOT to do it! You start from the outside in not from the inside out. Also, this is forestry work, you do not do this on residential environment. Your handling of the chainsaw was also poor, you cut with the tip, not the whole blade when making grooving cuts.
