You are correct. Splitting this time of the year can be done but you do have to pay a little extra attention to the bees. I split but I make sure I have a mated queen for the queenless colony. My hives are around a 12 acre pond and this time of the year the dragonflies are numerous, full grown and as always are very hungry. A young queen returning from her mating flight has only about a 30% chance of making it back to her hive. The odds aren't on her side or mine. Thank you for the update and the joke. You know you remind me of Red Skelton when you tell a joke. Almost every time when he reached the punchline he would laugh himself silly. 🤣 I even start laughing before you deliver the punch line.

@@WallsBeeMan no, there is nothing you can do about the dragonflies except find a way around them. Buying mated Queens is the best way. Once again thank you for all of your updates.

Tim Sr. or Tim Jr. My name is Kenny, I live in Pollok Tx. (In east Tx.) I have watched every video many times over that you have made. I went to local bee meetings for 2 yrs. before getting my bees. I absolutely love my bees. I have one thing I would like to pass along just to hear your opinion. I am a 1st year bee keeper and I have 2 hives. I started out getting 10 frame brood boxes and after watching you talk so much about 9 frame spacers and how you really liked them, I bought some 9 frame spacers and changed over from 10 frame to 9 frame. Well everything went good until July came around this year and I started having problems. Several times I went into my hives to do a little inspection and they had drew the wax so far out and had filled the comb up with honey, that the frames were so heavy taking them out that just looking at the one side of the frame, all of a sudden the other side would fall completely off and fall on the ground. I use plastic, waxed foundation, and I am wandering with the temperature so hot in Tx. and the frames so heavy, that maybe their bees wax just won't stick to the plastic foundation. I've noticed that you use all natural wax foundation, maybe that is why I haven't see you have this problem. Maybe them attaching their wax to the natural wax makes a better bond than with the plastic foundation. Last week I went back into my hives and had to do a little work to make them 10 frame hives again. I'm hoping that after winter is over and they have eaten the large amounts of honey, that I'll be okay. Any thoughts on this matter. Have a blessed day. Love the video's.

Kenny, Sorry for it being long time since I am acknowledging you but I just discovered your comment in the spam folder. My my, you sure started out doing the right things and learning. Kenny, there is a lot beekeepers do not know or understand about bees and maybe that is part of what makes bees so interesting. Colonies will do and be different in many ways. See what works best with this colony ........keep us posted.....tim

Good to see ya again! Another year passed me by putting together some hives. Ah well maybe next spring. I don't like the idea of California bees to start with. I live way up north very cold winters an lots of snow. We had a good 3ft come March on the ground and 4ft the previous year. So many roof collapses . Heh one day out shoveling not really thinkn bout nothin.Takin in the beauty. I turn around an it hit me like a hammer. Here I got snow banks 6ft high never thought of my roof. So there I stood thinkn , wow thats a lot of snow up there. Good thing I did that roof surely was ready to fall in. Well anyway I got off track there. What would you recommend for bees in extreme. Weather? Lot of people tell me their bees die every year. But what I suspect is they just do it for as much honey as they can get an then leave them and don't mind spending the money every spring for new ones. I find that cruel an disgusting. Well sure was good to see ya back. Thanx for the chuckle
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
I read every word. We used to get good snows but not any in the last 20 years. I'm really not quality to advise you because beekeeping in such cold weather will be so different from our techniques. Maybe the next video I could ask someone from the north to share with everyone what they do...... Take care & stay in touch...........tim

Thank you Frances When I say take care of them, get in the habit of knowing what a heavy hive feel like so when you run into one that is lioght wegiht and doesn't have enough honey, you will recognize it. If you can't pick up the complete hive, you can lift up the rear of the hive. Also, know thy have a good queen. Just because we see some bees coming and going in late summer, doesn't mean they have a laying queen. Take care...........tim

Hi Tim. I live in a town called Tully Up in central NY. I have 6 hives. Started with 2 but circumstances got out of hand and now have 6. I would like more info on screening a weaker hive on top of a stronger hive over winter. I would like to give all my bees the best chance of surviving the winter. As always, enjoy your videos, thanks for your service and god bless.
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
Mark, when you do it you will then see how simple it is. Lay a door screening on top of the strong hive right next to and on the bee. Lay a stick on top of the screen at one rear corner Now place you hive body with the small colony on top of that. The stick lets the small colony fly out when weather permits. ......keep us posted........tim

I need your valuable advice again! What do you think about buying established colonies NOW here in Iowa? There are 10 hives with 2 deeps each and each colony has brood and honey. This also includes the bottom and top migratory cover. And what would one reasonably expect to pay for all the above? Thank You, Mr. Durham!
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
Sorry getting back to you a week later. Do not buy them unless you go into each hive and inspect the condition of the frames and if they have a good queen. I think you will be better off starting out with foundation and good frames. tim

Tim, what would happen if you put a queen excluder on the entrance of hive to keep the bees from swarming? Hope this is not a stupid question.

That is a good question. It just will not work. If there is a small opening so the queen can get out, She will find it.

Wax worms seem to be my biggest issue here in upstate s.c. What is the best way to prevent them from getting in, or remove them once they do penetrate my hives? Thanks!
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
There are wax worms in every hive. In every hive. You can not prevent the moths from flying in at night. If there are not enough bees in the colony to keep them clean out, then the wax warms take over. Usually it is the outer frames where you are seeing the wax warms. Take out the framers you can and put them in a freezer for say 2 days, then when you colony builds upt, you can put the frames back into the hive...............tim

Glad to see you back on the videos!😁😃 My question for you...: I have a laying worker hive that is dwindling down and then today, I discovered a small (end of summer) swarm in my swarm trap. I would like to combine them so as to not let the LWH resources go to waste. But, I am afraid the laying worker(s) will kill the swarm queen. Would you recommend the combine or how would you do it? Thank you in advance! ❤️🐝🐝
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
Well, you have nothing to loose. Take the laying worker hive as far as you can, 100 feet or more. Shake all bees on the grass, Take hive and frames back to the original spot. Spoke the frames & hive good and dump the swarm in from entrance of hive also. Good luck & keep us posted..........tim

When is it to late to split a hive in north Texas zone 8a?
@WallsBeeMan
@WallsBeeMan 4 года назад
Of course the best time is in the Spring after they have built up good. I have never split a hive after Spring. To answer your question. If you have enough bees, a good new queen, enough pollen frames & honey & you will actually look after them close, then I'm sure some beekeepers have split them after Spring. Keep us posted..........tim
