I have some gigantic rounds of wood that need split. Some are so big, I can't move them. But I need to split these into firewood. So let's see what it takes.

It helps if you can hit the same spot twice!!😄. My grandfather taught me to split wood with a single blade axe. He called me "Lightening" saying I never hit the same place twice!! He was the best I ever saw!! I can still see him in my mind using that axe. I miss him greatly. Good job, man. Good job.

Hi Evan. When hand splitting, try starting closer to the edge. It should split easier. I love your videos and hope this helps. 👍❄️

The easiest way to split huge logs, is start from the side edges., and work your way around the log, towards the middle. It works like a charm.

Definitely. You're working against the entire weight of the piece doing it this way- it's like trying to eat a 1 pound burger by stuffing the whole thing in your mouth at once! Especially when trying to split by hand, you have to work smarter, not harder.

I like that you share your candid thoughts when you’ve realized that there might have been a better way to tackle the task. One tip I can give is to try to handle the wood as few times as possible. so for example. when you have split the wood on the wood splitter. do not lay the wood on the ground, place it on a cart or in the bucket on the tractor. so you do not have to pick up the wood later. thanks for a very nice and inspiring channel.

I just had my first experience with a 27ton vertical or horizonal wood splitter , i had big chunks like You got there , so big i cant handle, i had piece of metal plate i laid over the foot & 4x8 x3/4 plywood i laid over the metal & foot , i use my tractor bucket to move the chunks on to the plywood , which i could slide up to the splitter, which was a big help, , it made it easier for me, i'm 65 yrs old , iam all for work smarter not harder . i got a good bucket full of split wood per chunk , its great wood , but lots of work , no doubt .

I love cutting, splitting, stacking, and burning wood. I have had 2 ruptured discs and have to be very mindful of what I do and how I do it. I cannot tackle big rounds like those anymore. I never had a log splitter, but kept a few steel wedges and cut a few wooden wedges when I was trying to split big stuff. You're right about the way the grain was in every which direction. Makes it almost impossible to split by hand without either a group of wedges or your splitter. Even with the splitter you had a time. Those rounds were more than 500lbs and moving them into position is the hardest part.

Attack at the weak spots. You have several splits in the wood. split them wider. Work from the outside in. Once you widen them you can cut slabs off the sides along the splits. Even with your hydraulic splitter use the natural splits in the wood.

Nice video and admire your determination. A quick tip. When cutting those rounds with your chainsaw it’s much easier on your saw and quicker to cut with the grain(turn the log on end and cut from fresh cut to fresh cut or with the bark) than against the grain. You’ll get very long chip and much easier on your equipment.

I remember the winter I turned 14, I grew big enough and learned how to split wood. We would burn at least 4 cord a winter. So I went at it, with a sledgehammer, a maul, and several wedges. One wedge was not enough. Following October or so some neighborhood guys my age came over. And I was better than all of them. First time ever and that was awesome.

Great video. Very candid, honest, and fun to watch. Get another couple of wedges, it helps a lot to have at least 3 for rounds that big, and those were huge rounds, really huge. I’ve worked with rounds that large once. It was “fun” but time consuming and hard work. Yet satisfying to break up, when it finally happened - using my 3 wedges, 2 mauls, and one splitting axe (no chainsaw involved). Great fun to watch this video.

Soft maple/ silver maple does make for some gorgeous tables/ wood projects. When i was in highschool 35-36 yrs ago i made a coffee table out of silver maple and my neighbor seen it and wanted one also. So i made her one and she still has it to this day. She's been offered up to $1500.00 for it. But we had a agreement when i built it for her that when she passes on the coffee table comes back to me.

That maple tree could have been a super awesome piece for your log cabin, I actually make table tops out of large maple tree bases as I have a Alaskan sawmill. If you make cookie cuts with the wood chunks they make unique table tops. I'm currently working on 12 smaller ones for end tables which can be used indoors or outside as they are also poly coated. FYI - if you think it wasn't worth it for some reason those are the ones you want for the table tops because they add unique character to the whole concept.

Almost painful to watch because I just went through the same thing last year on several trees. Same process until I got the chainsaw out and made it easy on myself. One day I would get it to a size I could lift and then finish splitting the next day. I thought the next day would go faster but each one of those "manageable pieces" is another 4 splits on the splitter. that adds up exponentially. To all those who buy your wood and think your wood guy is too expensive... Watch this video!!! It is insulting to ask for a discount.

Wood heat is the best. But it doesn't just "happen." And there is art in woodburning stove management. I enjoy the conceit of never having downed a tree for heating. There always seems to be some around (here in hurricane/tornado alley, a.k.a. "the big bend" of Fl) It is also carbon neutral, releasing only the carbon sequestered by the tree. Proper, informed use of the wood ashes benefits soils where needed, or can be used in many other ways. Engine-driven hydraulic splitters are a boon! However, the part not covered in the instruction/owners manual

Those butt ends are a beast. I some times just let them rot. Maple is always easier to work green than dry. One suggestion I would try would be try splitting those large but tends from the outside in vice down the middle. If it doesn’t have knots this usually will work. Makes you think about the days gone bye: (tough men back then) and will give you some awesome cramps at night. Good job.
