Black and white thinking, also known as dichotomous or all-or-nothing thinking, can significantly impact relationships by oversimplifying complex situations and limiting perspective. In the context of relationships, individuals prone to black and white thinking tend to view interactions, emotions, and outcomes as either entirely positive or entirely negative, with little room for nuance or compromise. This rigid mindset can lead to unrealistic expectations, heightened conflict, and difficulty in resolving disagreements. Instead of recognizing the gray areas and complexities inherent in human connections, individuals may categorize their partners or themselves as either wholly good or wholly bad, which can contribute to feelings of insecurity, resentment, and dissatisfaction. Overcoming black and white thinking in relationships requires cultivating awareness of subtle nuances, embracing flexibility and empathy, and learning to tolerate ambiguity. By acknowledging the shades of gray and embracing the complexities of human nature, individuals can foster healthier and more resilient relationships built on understanding, acceptance, and mutual respect.

Our daughter and her husband tried to convince my husband to "control" me calling me "rebellious", it wasn't true but they wanted him to oppress me, treating me disrespectfully through influence on him. It worked for a very short time until my husband saw that it was wrong for them to interfere in our marriage. I made it clear they need to leave us alone.

Thank you for sharing your story. It takes courage to stand up for yourself and your marriage. It's great that your husband realized the importance of respecting your relationship.

Thank you, Dr. Fox. This was a great video. Do you think this kind of thinking can show up in the workplace, too? Sometimes I feel like my thinking is too rigid at work, like having expectations on how something should be done (whether it's communication from a boss or protocols). I struggle with knowing when it's appropriate to advocate versus being too rigid.

Unless you're with a borderline who abhors your love and trust and only wants to hurt you, especially if you dared to be happy about something.

Good timing to be reminded about the concept of splitting. One needs good boundaries. Sweet to socialise with people with grace - but there is often some one who brings drama.
