Appreciate this very much. The specific types of handles (axe vs. sledge vs slip-fit) you've named and reviewed, plus confidence in response to a question below, make it clear that I alone own the mess of my last axe-eye replacement effort. My replacement didn't stay on - but it should. So, back to the hardware store and, hopefully, a better result. Thank you.
Thank you for the information. I have an old axe eye maul head with the taper you showed. I tried to rehandle it but I couldn’t get it to stay on - there was a lot of of empty space on the sides of the tongue at the top once I put in the wedge. Is there a good place to find maul-specific handles?
Any full length replacement axe handle should work for an axe eye maul. Be sure not to take too much wood off the topmost portion of the tongue as you do the fitting, and also you might have to custom make a wedge wide enough to full the void space. Even so, some eyes are just difficult to deal with. On one of my favorite sledge eye mauls, I have to use either a circular metal step wedge in the middle, or better yet, drive four small metal step wedges into the gap that remains on the sides between the top of the tongue and the inside of the eye.
