That brings out early teens memories. In the mid 70's, I helped my Dad splitting ash and elm with wedges and sledge hammers. Mind you, we did it when the weather was in the low minuses. Eventually, everything cracked after a few swings but, those logs fought us until they were, in "distinct' pieces. I don't miss those miserable times, with the "old mentor" but, I miss him. I raise my cup of coffee and offer a toast, to hard working Men.

Good morning Chris, be careful of those lines, flying off the wedge, I have an axis, and I was splitting some rock Maple couple months ago, and it exploded off the wedge from my axis Spliter end it hit the end of my thumb and I tore the tendon and just recently had it surgically repaired. So the end of the story is try to read your wood while splitting it can get you end of story.

Was thinking about cycle-time the other day. With auto-cycle, my splitter is 6.5sec. Plenty quick for me. It allows me to work at a pace that I can handle all day. To me that's more important that having the fastest splitter out there. I settle into a groove and can rest maybe a second or half-second each cycle when the rounds are close.

Nice to see you put oil on the splitter but please don't put it on the Piston cuz the next Pistons wet wood oil it brings in dust under the seal and that's what will cause your that will cause your piston to leak your break to seal in the benefit back into the seal small Rubber seal dirt gets up under that it rips it always keep the Piston dry it gets lubricated when it's back-and-forth no problem never never put oil on a piston

Great video, that was some nasty wood. Here in West Virginia I have a lot of elm on my property that I cut and split and it is by far my least favorite wood to split. Locust, cherry are a welcome relief from elm splitting. I saw that piece jump at the first of the video and plan on showing it to my 16 year old son, he helps me split a lot and has recently started wanting to run the splitter so we had a lot of talks about safety and paying attention to each piece you split and what to watch for. Maybe you could do a segment in an upcoming video about the steps you take when splitting and what to watch out for so that the new to wood splitting people can benefit from it. Thanks for Great videos.

those chunks are a lot of what i got out of my yard maple. makes it fun to split. thats a nice table on that splitter... i only have a couple of cradles that help hold the round on. (Troy Built/Craftsman) but with the tractor bucket to help lift, i can use it as a table too, i normally throw them all back into the bucket and then take it to the pile. i might have to try and find some sheet metal and angle iron and fabricate one? it was fun watching you wrestle with the ugly fugly. when you get those, its almost like a geometry or physics puzzle......where do i put the wedge....lol. thanks for sharing this one because i was beginning to think all you guys ever got was pretty wood.....it all burns. looking forward to you building the bin.

@davidn1369 Год назад
Hi Chris, that single wedge and your expertise at reading the grain did a great job of turning those ugly crotches into sellable wood. I saw that you throw some of the big pieces on the ground after initially splitting a huge round. Have you considered buying/building a small table, the same height as the splitter, to expand your working surface? Would help reducing the amount of bending over, plus reduce the congestion when splitting those big boys.

Yup, I have!

I believe in the single wedge, less waste. Just my opinion
@thefirewooddoctor
@thefirewooddoctor Год назад
I ran the 4-way wedge on my Wolfe ridge splitter and it made minimal waste when splitting hickory. But for nasty knotted stuff, I'll go to the single wedge. Nice part is, takes seconds to go from 4-way to single wedge.
@dwaynedee529
@dwaynedee529 Год назад
@@thefirewooddoctor so basically, if the wood to split becomes the factor of producing. If the 4 way produces more, that's why the single producing less. Basic production, less means more
@thefirewooddoctor
@thefirewooddoctor Год назад
@@dwaynedee529 it mostly depends on the wood type you are working with. Knotty wood or nice clean wood. I've stuck knotty 20in oak on my 4-way wedge.
@dwaynedee529
@dwaynedee529 Год назад
So why do you wait 8 months for a great splitter. Cause it is worth it. To produce more, might mean your are cutting corners. It's only your name It's your life

Some Aussie Turpentine would be good to see. (I was cutting some and it broke the tips off a new CTC blade on my skilsaw! I was cutting it to half length so I could split it (by an axe/splitter) as the grain is plaited like a McDonalds girls hair.

Since you mentioned the Easton Made Axis. In all the many dozens of Axis splitter vids that I've watched, I've never seen a three way, four way or five way splitting head on an Axis ram. Makes me wonder if any of your viewers have seen anything other than a single blade ?

Do you reckon sub zero frosty conditions help dry wood by squeezing the sap out of it? Some have told me its as good as hot dry days.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard Год назад
No, but the humidity is dryer in the winter and it is windy and sunny and the freeze and thaw cycle we have all winter does dry wood.

I don't like big, flat, shingle looking pieces. They seem to smother the fire in my wood stove . I try to stand them up sideways but I would prefer they were cut in half. Since I split most of my own wood, I don't get many. I have a friend that helps sometimes and I call him the shingle maker. I love ash, most of ours in Ohio is so far gone, it is no longer worth cutting into firewood. Last year I burned a lot of ash and may get a little this year. Mostly going to have hickory. 29 trees went down in a spring icestorm, uprooted.
@InTheWoodyard

Yup, shingles, they dry nice and stack up good in a boiler for a long burn.

that is pretty impressive, some of them are tough splitting and it handles them easily. i cut a lot of bigger wood but it would be easy to make a table the height of the splitter and set the big rounds on with my skid steer. i might have to take tony up on his offer to show me his splitter and if i asked real nice maybe i could see yours also and spend some time doing the best job i ever had.
