Kirk relied heavily from Spock when it comes to logic. One thing is for sure that this Kirk and Spock were friends, according to sources. That's one of the Passions for Star trek success. Most people lack the ability to bond that strongly without sexual relationships. This is how we all truly want to feel about our friends. We just want that passion and love and devotion without the strings and romantic motivation.
