From what little we saw about the highschool life of the teens, Mike and Dustin seems close. They were always together in the highschool scenes and share common interests. They're still solid. Same with Lucas. Then when Mike goes to California, so we obviously don't see them interact anymore.

I had a friend like that when I was a teen. She was great person and well liked. Once she got a serious boyfriend (although she had boyfriends before) she became very self centred. She only talked about herself, stopped showing any interest in her friends and never would ask simple things like 'how are you?' If it wasnt about her, she showed no interest. Years after she broke up with her boyfriend, she stayed the same way. I became Dustin and moved on, and she ended up losing all of her friends within our group because she became a bad friend.

So I like that they have decided to include it in the show.

Just because he has arguments with Will and wasn't that crucial to winning this season doesn't mean he's now a boring and irrelevant character. Mike's struggle to say "I love you" was a buildup to the scene where Eleven got to fight thanks to his words. I don't really understand why everyone thinks of Mike as a bad person now. He has the right to dedicate time to his girlfriend. Yes, he's not best friends with Will anymore. But when we look at his side of the conversation they had in the van... Just some encouragement from Will got him to soothe his insecurities. People are just painting him to be some sort of bad guy... Do they really think he wouldn't jump from that cliff again if he had to? He would, we all know he would. He's just an insecure teen who's working out his life. Sounds like a normal teen to me. Sounds like slow but steady character development. This can go well, or it can end up in what you said, boredom and irrelevance. For now, it's just a road the duffer brothers can direct wherever they want to...

If will went to Hawkins High he would’ve been right there with them. 2) they’re doing so in honour of will who is a departed member of their party and they want to keep as much with them while he isn’t there as often as possible 🤙🏼

He’s not even a bad person? Some people don’t like carelessly writing or saying ‘I love you’ personally, those words for me are saved on special occasions, not after every letter you send to your SO. And he wasn’t a ‘bad friend’ to will. Maybe for like 1 episode max, but I mean it’s natural for friends to drift apart, him not interacting with Will as much isn’t the end of the world. He’s not a perfect character, but he’s been pretty consistent throughout the ENTIRE show. And seeing as how the plot is going, id bet he’s getting more screen time in S5, just as will and other sidelined characters are. He was a fan favorite in season 1-2 because most of the characters were not developed enough to be a. Likeable or b. Unlikeable. He’s literally just been Mike, not once has he ever made an inexcusable action, or vile decision.

It’s annoying how everyone says ‘omg I hate mikes new character’ but the fact is, Mike isn’t really a bad character, he’s just a little more angst and edgier. People wanted the show to focus on different characters, so they did. They sidelined the characters that got most of the screen time in season 1 so that they could pave the way for characters like Max, Dustin, Robin, and Steve. Mike is not a bad character, he simply wasn’t focused on because he wasn’t a priority this season.
