I'm from London 🇬🇧 but originally also from Ghana 🇬🇭 and I really want to learn spoken word/poetry the reason being is because I am a very big thinker, I can be doing the most basic tasks and randomly stare into thin air thinking about complex topics and having deep thoughts about society. I feel like learning spoken word poetry will enable me to voice and share my thoughts in an impactful and beautiful way.

Hello Beautiful. That was well presented so I am sharing it with my creative writing students. I performed my first poem in 1994 at Shippensburg University after feeling bullied by a lot of sisters on campus. After performing my poem about "sistahs" that "roll their eyes at me" I got a standing ovation and even tears from those very sistas that were giving me hell! They were suffering the same way I was. By the time I was 20 I published my first chapbook. I have 3 books under my belt now and I've performed on stages in Philly, NY, Harrisburg PA, Baltimore, DC, and even in the south of France. I love it and I love that young poetry heads like you are still sharing the art!

I was a "closet" poet for 20 years before I ever shared my writing with anyone other than my Partner. It helped through a lot of stress and gave me an outlet for emotion during difficult times. On a whim, I decided to start performing at open mics. Now, a few years later, I'm working on publishing my early works as a secondary survivor of sexual assault in hopes that it will help others. Of course, I'm still writing and performing new material on this topic and others.

I'm 32 y.o and new to the world of poetry, although when I was younger I had this small moleskine in which I would write my thoughts, so I guess I always had it in me somewhere. So I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to recover from love addition and allow my attention to be focused somewhere else. Writing poetry brings me so much joy, the process of creating, choosing the right words, finding the right image, editing, cutting it, all of it. It's the fist time that I do something and despite how it looks like, I simply enjoy the process. I signed myself up for an open mic night and I'm shitting myself a bit. I'm Italian but challenged myself to write in English. I thought I wouldn't be able to do it but turns out I can. So yeah, wish me good luck 😂 and I say hi to all the others fellow poetry buddies out there ☺️

Hi! I do spoken word, I started when I was 12 and decided rewrote, memorized, and presented spoken words that I found on RU-vid to my church and congregation, have been doing it ever since. I just love poetry, that’s how I express my thoughts through writing and I love God so I use that as a platform to express that love. I’m just struggling with creating my own spoken word. I’m 18 now and I have yet to create my own spoken word, I’m not a pro at formulating my thoughts so it’s been hard for me to express what I want to write on paper. As you mentioned figurative language is important and I have yet to master the art of metaphors similes and all of the above. This time I’m taking the step to actually complete a spoken word, but I want to learn the foundation and really study it. This video helped!

Just write as you feel don’t think abt it just write it . Thinking will stop you because them are fear based thoughts , ego , thoughts of others that neither are you or not yours . Just write the first thing that comes to mind and your brain will rewire and program to this new habit and open possibilities. So stop saying you can’t do you already programming your mind you can’t and it’s going to take it as so

Spoken Word Poetry is definitely my therapy and has been for YEARS! I have NOTEBOOKS upon NOTEBOOKS of poems. Now, if I can just get over my stage fright, i will love to perform them !

Hi Lydia, start simple and write about what you love. Memorize the words and perform for someone. Boom you are now a spoken word poet. You got this. Try not to make it too difficult.

I’m terrified of public speaking, but I am interested in writing spoken word. The very thought of speaking in front of a crowd, leaves me drowning in a pool of doubt.

Hi Joseph! I felt the same way when I was younger. The secret is to get to the point where you be the You that You want You to be. Once there don't give any attention to what people think about you. Don't get too caught up in the highs or lows. Just be you and have fun. There is something magical on the other side of fear. If I were you ( I did this myself) I would find a local open mic night. Go there alone. Get on the list to perform on stage. Once on stage let the audience, who are mostly poets, know that you are terrified to be up there. Let them know that you are facing your fear. Perform one original that you wrote (keep it short). Take a deep breath and thank the audience for helping you overcome your fear. You will get so much love from the audience. You got this!
