I love how he gently and carefully lowers each tool to the workbench, a real craftsman that loves and respects his tools! This video has great information on spokeshaves. Highly recommended!

This simple video is an exemplar of the best that RU-vid can be. These how-to videos by humble soft-spoken craftsmen have no screeching or pounding heavy metal music, no fist pumping, just basic instruction in why and how something works, and how it can work for you. Thank you

Even though I have a range of premium spokeshaves, I keep going back to my Stanley 64 fitted with a Ray Isles O1 blade and it is a joy to use and is more nimble that others you have shown or any of the premium shaves.

Just a correction to one of the spokeshaves that you presented. The second last one with the wooden handles is made by Veritas and sold by Lee Valley Tools and not made by Lee Valley. A very well made spokeshave and very pricey as well. I wish that I could justify buying one, but unfortunately I have to maintain a reasonable price level. I have the vintage Stanley #51, a Veritas low angle shave and another larger Stanley #151 in great shape. They are wonderful tools for paddle making. I love them! Great for any craftsmen's arsenal of tools. Thanks for sharing your video. Cheers!

Veritas is the manufacturing arm of Lee Valley from 1985. They revive discontinued old tools with/without their improved interpretation or produce new patented designs to sell their outlets as well as to wholesale to other retailers. It is not like many tool manufactures supplying Craftsman stamped tools to Sears. So I don't get your point giving the wrong information.

@@beaumoon8581 My point being that the spokeshave(s) in question are identified as 'Vertitas' and NOT 'Lee Valley'. The stamp on the tool(s) indicate just that. Regardless of whether or not Veritas is an arm of the company is moot. Tools made for Sears are sold under the 'Craftsman' name and not stamped Sears. Nothing more

There is only one group of tools more addictive than spoke shaves and that is block planes, and I don't want to be rehabbed.

Have you looked at the Japanese Kanna hand plane? Very sweet. And now I am addicted to their pull-type hand saws.

I just had a very good laugh with your video. I loved it. Bet you thought it was not funny type of video though. The laugh was at the First Aid Kit. Everyone, go back and have a good look. A very nice First Aid Kit indeed. I have been woodworking for ~ 50 years, just retired, looking forward to more shop time. I was up before daylight, working on my hanging tool box, to be a show piece, and had a kick back on the tablesaw. I am now typing with one hand. The kickback pulled my hand into the blade, which I just tuned up my saw and put a top of the line blade on it - polished, at least it was sharp and working perfectly. I experienced a kickback and then an acute allergic reaction to the rotating, sharp blade. Five fingers were involved. Two seriously, though I still have them. Oh, I had just made a couple of nice push sticks, which I was not using. The cut I was making could not have been made with guards in place, I was convinced. This should have been made with a different tool. I do love the First Aid Kit though, and will build one to display in my shop - as a reminder to think twice, cut once.

Any of the ones that has a flat bottom would work well. Stanley 51 would be a good no-frills choice. Paul

what brand was the last spokeshave?
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 8 лет назад
+Shane Betmarik From Tom Caspar: The last spokeshave I showed in the video is an oddball, but one of my favorites. It's a Stanley 53, made from 1870 to 1947. Kunz, a German company, still makes one just like it and it's almost as good. The Kunz model is available at Tradtionalwoodworker.com and costs $40. James Krenov popularized this almost-forgotten tool in his famous book The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking published back in the '70s.

+WoodWorkers Guild Of America that's what I thought it looked like other than its color (which would be green) it looked like a Kunz. I have their palm plane which I like very much. planning on getting their spokeshaves also. I've found 3 different curves on amazon. As was explained in the video, they do require some slight modifying but well worth the cost.
