As a Fisherman aswell, Agreed, probably the least edible things to catch. Also crabs being the only smart enough person to not be caught made a lot of sense, i mean how often do we catch crabs without nets or traps? Allmost never. The one time i did was when a fish ate my bait and a crab grabed the fish at the exact same time so i pulled both to my boat lol.
As a kid, I thought this episode is about kidnappers, and reminding children to not engage with strangers, but I really like the analogy of the plot to drug addiction.
Being "Hooked" to the drugs of the hook really makes sense, as they also go up "high", as if it really is a drug, and coming back down, being upset that it's over, only to it again and again.
EVERYONE likes to "get high" even tho not every one dose "Drugs" but EVERYBODY gets "high" it DRIVES human nature, some get high off church or holy sprit some get high screwing others over MOST get high getting rich some get high on drugs and some get high on carnival rides some get high on adrenoline.
Imagine just relaxing at your favorite restaurant, trying to finish your drink, and the owner restaurant tries to explain why drugs are bad to his cook by giving you the biggest life changing, ass splitting wedgie out of nowhere. That poor guy lol
@@Bigclover dunno what that’s supposed to be but nah you’re right lmao If I had a nickel everytime I witnessed someone get a violent wedgie in order to demonstrate something I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice, right?
I think the fishes not noticing the hooks just plays into how most fishes in real life don't really see the hook itself and just sees the bait or tackle (I mean that's why we put them there anyway)
Mr. Krabs inviting his daughter and her friends over to the Krusty Krab despite knowing that they'd see SpongeBob naked is supposed to represent an intervention. Addicts often experience a sense of shame, guilt, and embarrassment during the early stages of intervention when their entire families see them in a terrible state (represented by SpongeBob being forced to strip naked in order to survive).
@@MaxSpongeBob When I was a kid, I thought this episode was supposed to represent skipping school (hence the name of the episode, "Hooky", which is a colloquial term for truancy). When I got older, it slowly dawned on me that this episode makes more sense as a representation of peer pressure for drug usage. That said, I agree with the points you made in this video. The early seasons of the show were surprisingly thoughtful and clever in how they tackled (pun intended!) real-life topics.
I think SpongeBob having his clothes taken by the hook represents how drugs can bring you to a really low point, that low point for SpongeBob was him having to take his clothes off.
mr krabs can seem evil on many occasions (ie selling spongebob's soul for $.62), this seemed like one of those instances where he actually cared for spongebob. They even show that in the end, patrick gets turned into tuna whilst spongebob doesn't, which seems like an allegory for good parenting. Also, mr krabs' out-of-nowhere fear of the hooks suggests that he actually had been hooked himself at some point but managed to escape back to the water, considering his vivid description of what happens when you're hooked.
I always thought this episode is about gambling. Would fit the most imo. But I see the it being about drugs too. To continue doing it until it’s too late
Mr Krabs just putting up a help wanted sign is some extremely bold commentary on the way society treats addicts, doing that shit in a kids show is insane but i respect the hell out of it.
I dunno, I don't think it's entirely a story centred around a lesson about drugs, this can apply to anyone with an addictive personality (even habitually addictive) when it comes to activities or habits seen as negative. Drugs definitely fall into those categories however and make it much easier to explain to a general audience of course. If they do an episode about drugs specifically I'd imagine it would involve goofy goobers in some way due to the effects being similar to alcohol OR regarding the episode in season 3 ''Just One Bite'' where Squidward overconsumes krabby patties which I believe to be another story about overconsumption and/or addiction also.
I hate this episode just because of the ending. Making your employee take of his underwear in front of women just to teach him a "valueable lesson" is brutal.
Definitely not just representing drugs. There are hundreds of different addictions and vices that aren't a drug. Children today are damned without hope of savior
7:23 ngl facts when i was a kid i used to think the same i liked when they used irl scenes it was always interesting to me as a kid seeing irl people or objects in spongebob.
Another analogy for the hook being a drug is the high/come up feels way better than the comedown kinda like a Lsd/shroom or Heroin high just look how giddy they are going up and how relieved they are coming down...and also if they don't come down they end up dying kinda like a drug overdose. It's fun till it ain't. Also you get "hooked" to drugs
Even the 7:24 shoe part might refer to drugs. People usually fling shoes tied together on power lines which indicates that gang/drug activity is present there
This episode is great apart from the goofy twist at the end. I do like the peer pressure lesson. Also something I didn’t really notice when I was younger. And the hooks can symbolize really anything that’d be bad for you but you could be peer pressured into. Like drugs.
I think the facial expression of euphoria was also unique for this episode. It looks less like fun but patrick and SpongeBob going practically insane where we had the close-ups. Id say that also hints at drugs cause they elevate your emotions usually in unusual amounts
In a later episode (I forgot the name) SpongeBob and Patrick go to see a new horror movie called Fisherman 4, it is a movie about a fisherman successfully catching fish but from the POV of the fish. Likewise the movie Scares SpongeBob and Patrick to the point where they miss 95% of the movie so they keep on watching it again always being scared to the point where they have to force themselves to watch the entire movie, they keep watching the movie until the last showing AT MIDNIGHT and are told to be aware of the fisherman, they rush home and where sho scared that Patrick couldn’t walk to his house from SpongeBob’s house alone and vice versa so Squidward has to take them home, after they both get home squidward gets the idea to dress up as a fisherman and scare SpongeBob and Patrick, squidward starts off by picking Patrick’s nose until Patrick sees him and starts freaking out, then Patrick runs to SpongeBob’s house but gets his face ripped off in the process, then SpongeBob and Patrick decide to swap underwear so they don’t have to die in there underwear, while they are swapping underwear Squidward comes inside SpongeBob’s house still dressed as a fisherman, after some more scaring Squidward accidentally reveals that he is in a costume but SpongeBob and Patrick think that the fisherman is eating Squidward so they decide to beat up squidward in order to “save him”, after Squidward is “saved” he goes to the hospital with SpongeBob and Patrick accompanying him as Gay uses Squidwards fisherman costume as a bed and the episode ends
I also think that this was also a lesson for his daughter, "getting hooked leads to humiliating situations" might be the strongest way to teach a teenager how not get hooked
It would’ve been so funny to see the kid who was there with Patrick return in Shell City in the first SpongeBob movie as one of the fish saved by the water.
Did you notice when all the fish were yelling at Squidward in the kitchen watch the orange fishes expression because he smiles for like a split second when he’s yelling at him it’s funny as hell
I think the hooks don't necessarily symbolize drugs, but addiction in general. Because what do people say when you are addicted to something? He got hooked into _________ That be drugs, smoking, alcohol any addiction in general
Aye bro you need to continue these they are so interesting I’m glad you started making these of all people it’s something about this channel that I love so much🙂
There's another episode that is similar to this, it's called Sailor Mouth, where Spongebob and Patrick were swearing. Which I love. DOES SOMEBODY HAVE A CAN OPENER?
Embarrassment is more important than people think it may seem harsh but its one of the fastest reality checks you can have on both sides of the coin damn bro who would have thought it was that deep appreciate the Brain Activity 🔥
I personally like how the other fish don't pay attention, it's only those who have tried it, who have seen and had them that can understand and see them, the other fish are blind to the use and abuse of these hooks just like people are to drugs irl
I remember whenever I made a promise to my dad, he’d make me to the, “Yo-ho, yo-ho,” pledge. We’d even to the, “Ah, Mother of Pearl, fire on the pool deck,” part to conclude. Rest In Peace, Kenneth Gerard Nash. (March 26, 1965-March 23, 2020)
They mock him and Krabs ‘goes oh well that’s it I guess’ to show that you’re a loser when you’re a junkie and you can only stop if you really want it yourself.
The hook sticking to SpongeBob makes me think of, “one last high. I won’t get addicted” but even if you don’t do it again it’s already killing you from the previous times
i barely ever comment on anything but this made me wanna comment (saying that like i'm some important person LMAOO), but the quality of this video was awesome dude and genuinely kept me hooked, if you can pardon the pun, i can't wait to watch more from you man, this was absolutely awesome 🫂💜
nahh the craziest part of this episode was 'there was a kid here earlier but i guess he left' and in the distance there was a pair of sneakers. that kid was violated
The can of tuna firstly seemed disconnected, "why a starfish and a sponge would be in a tuna can?" But as I study marine biology, which also Hillenburg's major, it is related to Bycatch issue, untargeted species dragged in the catch. It didn't come as a major fisheries issue until 2010 decade.
Hooks scare the hell out of me. My brother's into fishing and one of the hooks got stuck in our couch. She then tried to get it out herself but the hook went through her finger, there was blood everywhere and she was screaming a lot, it was honestly one of the scariest things I've seen. And then she eventually just pulled it out. I literally cannot look at any fish hook the same way again, and always make sure to stay as far away as I can from them
