My favorite bit of lore from the Kuo-toa is that their shared prayers can create gods. It is like Tulpa from Tibetan folklore in that Supernatural Episode.

Can we now create a new concept, the Black Swanmay. What happens when a Swanmay is separated from her wings, becomes corrupted, and commits evil acts? Can she be reunited with her wings, or does her corruption prevent her from donning them again? What new levels of evil is she driven too as she realizes the loss her corruption has caused her?
@bukharagunboat8466
@bukharagunboat8466 6 дней назад
I’m seeing three possible endings. 1) the wings reject the evil fey. She despairs and throws herself into the sea, transforming into a Lorelei, which is a Nordic siren. 2) the wings have become corrupted and she transforms into an evil fey, such as a Harpy. 3) the Kuo Toans have used the wings in their worship, and she transforms into an avatar of their god.

So yeah, I mentioned this in a sub comment. Maybe you worked this out in the full written version of the adventure, but as presented here, Amara doesn’t have assurance she’ll ever be told where the feathers are. He dies, and the location goes with him. But she can’t marry him hoping he’ll give it up on his death bed. My solution adds a puzzle element. He left the map in a scroll case sealed with wax. He paid a spellcaster to mould earth over it in the form of a limestone block or something built into one of the granite garden fountains, intentionally set under a falling stream. This odd block would be noticeable by your most perceptive characters if they interact with the statuary garden described in the video. After some time (40 years feels appropriate) the rock will dissolve enough to reveal the scroll case inside. Anyway, Husband’s deal to Amara is he took a divine oath in the presence of a cleric that “In 40 years, whether I’m dead or alive, the location of what you seek will be revealed. Alternatively, if you give me an heir, I will give them the location on their 21st birthday.” The counter oath he demanded from her is that she never seeks his bodily harm, even after getting her property returned. Well, she gave him Pearl, as you mentioned, but she has never given up trying to beat his scheme. For his part, he left letters filed alongside his will for Amara telling about the dissolving stone, and for Pearl on her 21st birthday. There is also a letter that he keeps hidden in a secret compartment in his study addressed to Pearl that reveals her mother’s nature and the location of the wings. Finding the will is outside the scope of the adventure. But searching the study should turn up an “In the event of my death” letter explaining the will is on file with the attorney, and that a letter to Amara with the information she is owed is there, alongside a copy of a letter addressed to Pearl to be delivered on her 21st birthday. And that he hoped to give her the original himself, and is sad to miss that.” The original is in a well hidden secret compartment in his study, along with some other loot that parties love discovering. So that’s my brainstorming add. Thanks! I needed to get in that creative writing fix. Feeling the urge lately!

This is so good! I hadn't really explored that angle too closely. In my head, she just got a bad deal, and there really wasn't any fixing it. Hence, the bitterness and revenge. But making an agreement like that is a way more solid idea, both for Amara and Havelock, and it adds another layer to their dynamic that I really like. Great stuff, thank you!!

I think my biggest critique is that the 'jobs' are kind of bland and I can see a lot of parties not interacting with them at all. I think a better start to kick it off is have the PC's traveling by ship when they nearly crash trying to port thanks to there being no lighthouse. The players can attempt to save the ship or it can end up crashing and they manage to swim to shore. This leads them to trying to find out what's going on with the light house and can lead them to the governor's home (where he hires them to help find who killed the light house keeper) or they can investigate the lighthouse themselves.

I hope they love it! Writing a dungeon in that style was new to me, especially since I wanted the space to be very natural and the creatures to have had little time to make it a “home.” I tried to make it good, but don’t hesitate to add your own touches!

Im curious to know how the party is supposed to make the connection between amara the swan maiden and the cloak of feathers in the Kuo Toas lair. That connection didnt seem abundantly clear while i was listening, so im not sure how they would discover this
@feywildfiend
@feywildfiend 9 дней назад
Definitely one of those things I thought of in my head but didn't really explain. I imagined a fairly down-on-its-luck town where the manor overlooking the village was the one clear wealthy place. Only two women live there, so with the proper conversations the party could connect those dots. I also thought that if they spent the night in the lighthouse the night of a shipment, they could run into her there. They'd have to figure it out by talking to her, or I guess by learning the lore. Or if they don't talk to her and figure it out, she could confront them after finding the feathers and try to get them back!
@KCBCollier
@KCBCollier 9 дней назад
If sorting out the ghost of the lighthouse is done fast enough, the party will confront Amara. She will be able to explain her motive then, and engage the party as adventurers for herself. You’d probably want to design a hidden compartment with the map in his study. Something she wouldn’t have found alone. I don’t remember if there was a fulfillment point of their agreement where Amara would be given the location of the feathers after something like 40 years or just upon his death (Probably not that, as she’s shown she’s willing to kill already.). Maybe her husband paid a druid or cleric to on a block of limestone (unusual in a fountain, as it dissolves over time) under the stream of a garden fountain. After so long, it would dissolve enough to reveal something inside that would reveal the location of the feathers. Right now, it only shows a cupping in the stone commensurate with the time already passed. But if the party were to find his will in his office, along with a letter explaining the dissolving stone, they could figure out a way to speed up the process. Amara was not told how she will learn where her feathers are. Just that her husband took a divine oath on the words “In 40 years, whether I am dead or alive, the location of what you seek will be revealed.” That could be a fun puzzle element.

So, it's all a setup to get your players into the Shadowfell? Even if they take the portal (which I wouldn't), once they're there, I don't see a lot of follow-up material to run. They don't even have a quest that leads them there. The Shadowfell is practically virgin territory, lore-wise, and isn't known to be friendly to tourists. Also, kuo-toa are native to the rivers and lakes of the Underdark, not the Shadowfell. Most natives of the Shadowfell are undead.
@feywildfiend
@feywildfiend 11 дней назад
The Shadowfell setup is completely optional! I basically designed the story to be plugged into a pre-existing adventure, as a Shadowfell starter (if the characters have other goals there), or just as a one-off. It all depends on what the DM wants/needs! And right on the Underdark-totally misremembered that!
