Emma! I always thought you'd be a big fan of Iran literature, it is so profound and unbelievably deep because of the sense of oppression and darkness that Iranian have been dealing with throughout their history and even now. This book and many other of his works are STILL banned in Iran and they are hardly found in any bookstores. And as a Persian girl and also a lit student, I can assure you that the blind owl by Hedayat is one of the most complicated works of literature in Iran even in its original language. I'm so happy for you that you discovered the book and read it bc honestly it is a hidden gem. If it's possible for you I highly recommend you to read more of his works, it would be such a big help to understand the blind owl much better. x

the Bloody Chamber right next to Pedro Páramo, oh my heart! love your description of the latter as a "choir" - that's perfect. and thanks for adding that you CAN figure out who's saying what, it hurts me when ppl say it's too confusing and dream-like to know what's really going on, like the plot stuff is actually great. thanks so much for bringing the Blind Owl to my attention, looking forward to reading it!

I’m going to reread The Bloody Chamber this fall (particularly in October for the spooky atmosphere) and I cannot wait!! My favorite tale is A Company of Wolves, it’s like a delectable treat, a jewel found in the darkest of woods, and the cackle of a witch at the forest’s edge. That book is everything and more❤️

AHH Emma you have the best taste in spooky, ghostly books! I finished reading the titular story of The Bloody Chamber a couple of weeks ago (I haven't touched it since because I have a rule where I'm only allowed to read this book while taking a bubble bath with a glass of wine and a candle by my side--the most fitting way to read such a decadent book) and it was INCREDIBLE. I also just purchased The Phantom of the Opera today and started reading it and it's ALSO SO INCREDIBLE. Not sure if you've read it, but you should definitely give Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury a try. I think you'd like it...it's so spooky and fun and the prose is gorgeous!

I don’t have the time I used to have in high school to read now that I’m in college but I’ve been trying to make time to read more for myself, so I thought it would be good to approach shorter things and take my time with them. Right now I’m reading Franz Kafka’s the Metamorphosis and it’s so good!

Uh damn, I've read the first 20 pages of "A dowry of blood" as trial and bought it instantly, because I couldn't stop. I've never read a book like that. I love it! It's so intense and Constanta is so believable. "I say you do not have a name" that gave me goosebumps. Very interesting point of view of a story which, in my opinion, is a problematic men perspective. Unfortunately no german translation, but the original language is so great and still understandable to me. Yay! Thank you for your recommendation! Oh and finally a book with trigger warning! So no ugly surprises.

It's the first time I've read so many of the books you're recommending and I couldn't be more excited because that never happens 🤣 I read the Bloody Chamber for my uni classes; And Then There Were None I listened to some time ago; Nevernight I remember reading after one of my uni exam sessions in 2018 (I bought the book as a reward for passing the hardest exam with an A). And then A Dowry of Blood - I read it a couple months ago because you'd recommended it so many times. To anyone who's unsure what to read first - that novel is definitely one of the best!!! It got me into reading after a very long slump and I'm very grateful for that. I'm currently rereading the Twilight saga (I got sentimental, it was one of my favorite books growing up, along with Harry Potter) and also listening to an audiobook of My Dark Vanessa. I guess both count as something for the Halloween season in a way 😆 Last week I read A Portrait of Dorian Gray for the first time. Next I plan to make a second attempt at reading The Secret History - this time by listening to the audiobook. It's the first time I've tried reading books that match the current season and I must say I'm enjoying it a lot!

Since you love And then there were none, you might be interested in The Decagon House Murders! It's a Japanese novel written in the context of a literary movement specific to a student group in Tokyo, who sought to initiate a second wave of "golden age detective" stories. They were inspired by the classic Holmes and Agatha Christie stories, and Decagon in particular is an adaptationish of then there were none! I am nit normally a fan of murder mysteries but this one had me hooked and I finished it in one day. The characters felt so comforting and lovely and this made the ending and resolution of the book all the more shocking and intense. It stayed with me for a really really long time and gave me so many chills. ( also apparently there's a manga based on it which looks absolutely perfect)
