It's time to really set the scene on the On30 Gruesome Gulch mini-layout with a few spooky lighting effects! First I build and install a 9 volt power strip for all of the structure and scenic lighting, then it's time to improve the layout ambience with some LED RGB tape lights for the background, and a pair of warm/cool can lights for the front of the layout.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

I think people underestimate the value of good layout lighting and this video is a good example of how much impact it can have. For power distribution, I like the "16 Amp 2x12 Position Terminal Block Distribution Module". It makes wiring very simple. Great decision to put the RGB on the background and different lighting on the front of the layout. I was really glad to see you add these on the end.

The amount of time you put in building, painting, filming, and editing your video. And just how good it is simply doesn’t mach the sub and view count. Im also very creative and if you arent at a million subs then I dont want to get my channel going.

Hi David Now I can see what you meant about the undertakers building watching you. The lighting effects look really good. Can't wait to see the finished (if these things ever are) layout Hope you have time to do a video on building the mine before time runs out. regards John

Great look. Very simple but so effective. I presume you will also be installing some sounds to enhance the atmosphere.

Can't wait to see it all finished up! I'm so excited. Also, you can get corner connections for those lights so you don't have to try to bend them 😊 my RGB LED lights came with some.

Thanks for the double window on the video. I need the visual so I can replicate the same set up on my layout. As usual, great stuff Dave!

Love the lights, led lights provide for reliability and low cost. Excellent setup you have.

Some excellent lighting effects there Dave; pretty simple install too. Have you considered smoke effects on this layout? Adding smoke units to the locos, as well as the terrain, would fit in well with the spooky atmosphere. The ambient sounds are pretty cool too; will they maybe get on your nerves after a while though? Do different sounds come from different speakers, hidden around the layout, or is it just all-around sound?

Dave, I love your work! Not sure how you feel about the lighting hot spots in the corners. I’ve had some luck with layering window screen (or other mesh) over the LEDs as a diffuser.

Very cool lighting project Dave. Spooktecular indeed. One question though, as you started the Gruesome Gulch, you mentioned the layout should also be suitable for travel. However, this fixed strip to the studio wall sort of implies you would need a separate system for display on location. Unless you won’t bring the backdrop, of course. Anyhow, love the effects, definitely will look into these kind of strip lights. Must confess here until now I was kind of suspicious on these systems, mainly because where they are on display, they tend to be shown in a much less appetizing way. Must say the impact of the slow light fades really adds to the impression of GG. Even though the effect still seems a little purplish, at least on my humble screen. Cheerio!! Curious for the next episode!

For a portable layout, you need to design a color scheme that will work under multiple lighting conditions. The LED tape lighting is just for the display area in the studio (that could also host other projects in the future). So, it will undoubtably look different when displayed in other places. Not much can be done about that unless the layout is a completely boxed in diorama with integrated show lighting, but even then the display will be subject to external lighting conditions.

Interesting thing. Staples and electric cords. Yes, be afraid. Very afraid. But... There is a type of staple that could be used in those cases where one is stapling into wood or wood trim. Cable staples are the cable guy's friend. they are literally a "U" just like the character instead of square. A special stapler is used for them. THe tool has a U shaped stop on the business end that holds and guards the cable suffering the abuse. I've wrangled probably a couple of miles of CAT5e Network cable with one. They make quick work of any cable management. The staples slip out of sheet rock immediately. Your run has to be over denser stuff. Yes, I ruined a favorite indoor-outdoor thermometer with one of the U staples. Right through the sensor wire. if you invest in the tool and the fasteners, it can be a solution for the brave of heart.

Dave, I asked a couple of questions in your build of the Southwestern Trading Post building, not realizing that this post was made by you,11 months ago! Anyway, I'm wondering what the difference is between the thin MDF you refer to and Laser board and where do I find these products?
@ThunderMesaStudio
@ThunderMesaStudio Год назад
Hi Mark. MDF stands for "Medium density Fiberboard." Both MDF and Laserboard are basically fiberboard products made mostly of cellulose. Both have binders and glues in them. The differences are that MDF doesn't usually come in anything less than .125" thickness, while Laserboard comes in a variety of thicknesses down to .01. Also, the binders in Laserboard are specially formulated to be easier to cut/etch with a laser while retaining structural strength. Both products can be ordered from Encompass Media: encompass-media.salesvu.com/index.html

Does anyone wonder how much electricity we use and hopefully not wasting? Wish some would do a study on how much usage and are we as modelers wasting a lot of energy. I see so many power supplies on layouts. I wish there was one power supply and that's it.
@johnbusby215
@johnbusby215 Год назад
The standard normal power room lighting probably uses more power than most layouts would. Its only when you get to the Super Monster Empire layouts beloved of the model press that power usage could become an issue. Most people can't build anything anywhere near that big. A one single fits all power supply could become a problem as it would have to be put in the right place to minimize wire runs and have a high amperage probably around 5A, it would need four outlets in four different voltages 16v AC 12v AC 12v DC and 9v DC would be handy as well. The color coding for the wiring could get very complicated.
