Carving an eating spoon from a maple log!
Thought it was about time to upload some more spoon carving!
I'll try to upload videos every week but when you're in a startup, you can't always fully plan your time ;)
A proper eating spoon is definitely one of the most difficult spoons to carve. It needs to fit in your mouth in both depth and wideness.
Even though it looks funny, you have to measure in your mouth all the time to make it fit... Yes, I know...
When I make spoons for michelin restaurants or customers, I always use some plastic wrap, so I don't get in direct contact with the wood.
In this video I use:
Morakniv 105, 164 right and 162 double (one side grinded away)
Hans Karlsson axe and 35mm adze
Robin Wood opencurve
ASMR to the people!
My most precious spoon I traded for a walnut bowl. Spoon from Will St. Clair!

Thanks a lot! Haha, yeah I have the same feeling when I'm watching it. A bit to scary.. But after 1000 spoons and 100x amount of axe chops, it's in your muscles. Haven't carved a lot lately because of my hands. So when I start up again, I'll do it slowly. Don't got time for chopped off limbs.. Who does now a days!?

For a chunk of maple, I'm surprised it carved up that easily. Maple is very hard wood.
@formgjortbyJonasAls
@formgjortbyJonasAls 3 года назад
Yeah, Maple (this is Acer Pseudoplatanus) is hard, but nice to carve. But take care of your hands, or you'll end up hurting yourself. I got slightly beginning osteoarthritis. That's why I haven't made any carving videos lately.
@suecollins3246
@suecollins3246 2 года назад
Jonas, the strain on your hands is not what is _causing_ the osteoarthritis - it is merely exacerbating it. Start to research foods that are anti-inflammatory - try to lay off the bread and the sugar. Begin to incorporate cod liver oil into your diet. If you have the balls try for a five day fast. This induces a number of beneficial mechanical responses in your body. One of these is a process called Autophagy in which your body, in an effort to maintain it's nutrition, scavenges everything it feels it doesn't need including toxins and crystals and over-dense purine activity. The second is an increase in Human Growth Hormone which facilitates healing. The third is an increase in Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor which will make your brain work better. You don't want to be forced to give up what you love before you have to...

It helps that the wood probably still has decent moisture in it, I tried carving a spoon with really dry black cherry and it was not easy on the hands.

Does the chopping block have to be endgrain up? It's going to be my biggest challenge if so. I can get nice pieces of hardwood board but have to use them long grain up - but would this be hard on the axe edge? Thanks

@formgjortbyJonasAls
@formgjortbyJonasAls 3 года назад
Hey Jonaz! Maple, birch, cherry, walnut.. Go knock yourself out. Avoid conifers and some of the more exotic woods. My favorite is maple that's a bit hard. Birch is softer but not as strong. Best is apple, pear or european walnut, which is my all time favorite, but that's also very hard on your hands.

Just beautiful. I’ve started carving not long ago and although I’m not great, I’m getting there. I do have a question though. What would you use to seal or coat an eating spoon? I thought maybe veg oil but figured it might turn bad over time. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Jackie, I've been thinking about that and do you know what _I'm_ going to try? And I bet it's never been done before because no man has ever thought of it. _BIO TISSUE OIL_ ! It's designed by Swiss Dermatologists for the human skin and thus should be perfectly safe for food use. It's a combination of several different kinds of oils beneficial to the skin. It's colourless. It has a very unobtrusive perfume. I don't know what it tastes like because I've never tasted it. But I'm definately going to give it a bash!

Hello, this is the first time i see any of your videos or your channel. I also don't know how many years you've been carving spoons but while i was watching your video i got worried at some points. Especially when you lay flat the wood and chopped at the direction of your hand. Some of the people i know including my self use a somewhat V shape cavity to secure our hand while chopping those bowl and neck areas. Also please consider cut resistant tape on your thumbs while scooping the bowl. Hope you don't take this comment in a negative way. Just want to be sure that fellow spoon carvers stay out the harms way. Stay safe and god bless...

@Hans_Weber

@Mediocredoomguy
@Mediocredoomguy 4 года назад
@@Hans_Weber Well yes, but there are many types of maple, you would certainly find that Box Elder is a far different wood than Sugar maple or Red maple. How ever, It looks to me that by the way it carves and the fact that this guy is out of Denmark, I would say that it is either Field maple or Norwegian maple, hope this helps.
