In this video we're going to talk about spoon & spinner fishing . The difference between the 2 setups, pros and cons, etc! Thanks so much for watching, please smash that thumbs up button and don't forget to subscribe.

The fish in my area of the Columbia (Tri Cities area) are pretty well fed from what I'm told, which would explain why they don't care at all about my bait, no matter how I mixed it up. Power bait, worms, salmon eggs, chicken, marshmallows, corn, scented lures, etc., have all been 100% unsuccessful in areas I see guys pulling out steelhead, walleye, salmon, rainbow trout, bass, carp, etc. I had an experienced angler tell me last night that the trick around here is to use a lure that will piss them off, soliciting a bite to defend territory or just kill what's annoying them. She told me she's had a lot of luck with spinners that are copper on one side, and silver on the other. This video definitely has helped me learn a bit more about spinners and spoons. I had no idea about avoiding using swivels for spinners, but it's so obvious when you explain why you don't use swivels with spinners, but do for spoons. I'm pretty excited to get out there and apply what I've learned!

Spoon lure history I looked up was interesting. Spoons are the oldest lures in the world. The probable date of origin is around 3000 B.C. The ancient Romans used polished clam shells equipped with various types of metal and stone hooks, later developing crudely carved metal disks as spoon blades. Spoons are known to have been perfected and widely used in Sweden and Lapland before the year 1800. The progress of spoon design in America really began in 1834, when an angler really did something to qualify for the title of “Spoon Inventor.” The student was Julio T. Buel, a man of unlimited and extravagant imagination. Julio selected pure silver for his artificials, as he reasoned that this was the nearest to the color of a fish’s belly. Around 1819, young Julio tossed some white pebbles in a brook, as kids will, but the Vermont youngster noticed trout rising to them. The seed of invention was sown. While eating is lunch on a lake one day, he accidentally dropped a teaspoon overboard; as it sank, he noticed the peculiar twists and turns it made in the water. Julio had been experimenting with bits of bright tin with a hook soldered aft, which revolved in the water when retrieved, but the convex face was a new thought! Young Julio’s first effort was in lake Bomoseen, the lure - an old brass teaspoon on which he soldered a hook. The line was tied to the broken handle end. The resultant catch was phenomenal. Early angling literature reveals many similar explanations for the origin of something that had already been originated - but being a perfectionist, Julio spent several years in working over the finest details of spoon design. He applied for, and received, the first patent for trolling baits in 1834. He had bright polished treble hooks made to his own order because the black japanning in common use from $1-$2 per pound - a small fortune in those days. Even the swivels in common use were not good enough; they were made of soft wire, but Julio had them made of extra-hard wire. When it came to the selection of feathers, a salmon fly tier could be no more critical. Instead of electro-plating he used the more durable rolled plate, and even this burnished, instead of polished, for durability. Julio then moved to Lake George, New York, where he caught his first fish by deep trolling. He made long junkets into the Adirondacks to test thoroughly his new devices on all that local game fish. The result was that the manufacture of trolling baits was begun by him in 1848, at White Hall, New York. Source: The Wise Fisherman’s Encyclopedia, A. J. McClaine 1951.

Some people are catching on rooster tails saying its the only thing that works when i throw a spoon i have outfished them many times.

I think it's funny how where i live spoons are by far the #1 most used fishing lure, not contest. Spinners are *very* rarely seen (but becoming more popular now). On the flipside, in the US it seems that spinners are extremely popular and the spoon is the lesser known lure.

Dumped all my spinners and stuff in the junk box. I only use buzz bombs now. A small green buzz bomb on an ultralight rod is great for trout and searuns. A larger buzz bomb with a heavier rod is great for salmon. I have also had good luck catching bass and halibut with one. (Use it like a jig for halibut) Green or orange seem to be the best producers.

On larger rivers with Salmon runs (like the Fraser), there is much available "Bar" fishing space for people who need easy access or to remain in one spot. You often only have to cast out a few feet so technique and strength do not apply. Except when you catch one! Good luck!

Wait... I've been fishing trout with a treble hook. I've caught some but it seems they get loose a lot. I use the same spinners that you do, Panther Martins, Blue Foxes and Rooster Tails. Is that why I don't catch that many???? Does removing the treble hook really make that much of a difference? I know trout have tiny mouths so I used smaller spinners. My biggest is a size 6 Panther Martin. I'm still fairly new to this. Help?

Unpopular opinion: Thomas Boyant spoon over a rooster tail, for trout any day

I feel like this is a pretty popular opinion where I’m at, those spoons kill it! 🤙

I'll take spinners over spoons for trout any day. I just can't get trout with spoons. Even the cast master just doesn't work for me. Stream fishing for trout I'll use the CP Swing spinner. I guess if we had salmon where I live it would be different.

Why do y’all use single hooks and not treble hooks? Also I’ve watched a lot of your guys videos and I love em all

Also there are laws in a lot of the rivers out west, no treble hooks. The rivers in Michigan are slowly going the same way. The laws are in place to stop idiots from purposely snagging fish. And also I don't like snagging fish because it usually slowly kills them. So it's a waste as far as I'm concerned. You can't take it home and eat it but its just going to die anyway. But the laws are in place because there are A-holes out there. We all know them and see them out there. I use them voluntarily to not snag fish on accident.

Typically I’d use them when there are larger fish around eating small lures. You’ll likely get a more solid hookup over a small treble that’ll bend out on a big fish. Salt water guys do it often
