As a teen growing up in Montreal the Expos were my favorite team. A team with exciting stars like Rusty Staub, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Steve Rogers, and Gary Carter. I and millions of other fans were heartbroken when they moved to Washington, and when they won the World Series in 2019 I would go around saying the the Expos finally won a World Series!
I understand that with most pro sports, it is a business. And than means relocating sometimes. But I really wish that teams, in most cases, would be renamed when they do. It makes zero sense to have Memphis have a basketball team called the Grizzlies. It made perfect sense though in British Columbia. Or even though it’s iconic now, it makes no sense for the Lakers name in Los Angeles. Whereas Minnesota is the “land of 10,000 lakes”. Even with the Colts, Baltimore is where the Preakness is. Part of the Triple Crown in horse racing. Indianapolis is known for auto racing if anything. Or with the Dodgers in Brooklyn, they were known by that name because of the trollies that people and players were said to have to dodge in the area. Something that L.A. didn’t have at all by the time they moved. Another team not mentioned in this is the Utah Jazz. They used to be the New Orleans Jazz. That made total sense. But the UTAH Jazz? The whole state of Utah is not known for music first off, but jazz originated in African American culture. And I can’t think of a whiter state than Utah. So, if you want to move s team, fine. But please just rename them to an appropriate name for where they move.
I agree. When the Expos moved to DC they changed their name to the Nationals. The name Expos had to do with the 1967 world's fair in Montreal called Expo 67, which had nothing to do with DC and everything to do with Montreal.
My father never mentioned that in Chicago we used to have 2 NFL teams, the Bears & Cardinals. It wasn't until i was in high school that i learned that the Cardinals briefly made St. Louis their home until a decade later they permanently settled in Arizona. 🏈
The Chicago Cardinals growing up in Chicago they were overshadowed by the Chicago Bears. As a White Sox fan, they were the second team like the Sox were to the Cubs.
Great episode. Dallas Texans and New York Titans are two you didn't mention. Now the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets respectively. God bless you and your family! Thanks again for everything you do!!
You missed so many the Athletics both in Philadelphia and K.C. , the Seatle Pilots, Canton Bulldogs, Washington Senators, the Pottville Marunes (Im not sure of the spelling) .Not to mention all the teams from failed leauges , ABA .WHL
You forgot the Oorang Indians and Canton Bulldogs! Lol! You have to go way back for those two! Enjoyed the episode though. There were some other well known teams that moved that have already been mentioned, such as the New Orleans Jazz. People today often don't know where teams originated and got their names, but when you go back and look at the franchise history, it makes sense. Oh, you forgot the great Earl Campbell from the Oilers. He was so dominate, fans called the team the Houston Earlers!
You didn't mention the Seattle Pilots, San Diego Rockets, Philadelphia Athletics, New Orleans Jazz, Dalla Texans, New York Titans and former NY MLB teams the Giants and the Dodgers. Maybe you could do one on the renaming of professional and collegiate teams?
Saw the Expos back in summer 1999 in Montreal. It was so sad that the stadium was almost empty! Security wouldn't even let us move to the front even though there was nobody in the front!
Was a Baltimore Colts fan. Became an Indianapolis Colts fan. Maybe if I had lived in Maryland, I would not have continued to follow the team after they moved. Been a Colt fan since 1974. Still an Orioles fan. If the O's ever move, I wonder if I will stay with them or change teams. Recent rumors hint a possibility of the Orioles moving to Tennessee. I'm old, but not old enough to have been around for the St. Louis Browns. I do own a St. Louis Browns Starter jacket and ballcap.
it is funny when the colts left a new team joined the canadian football league and used the name colts until they were sued and they are the only american team to have won the cfl grey cup(hey we have longer end zones wider fields bigger balls and have to do n 3 downs which your running game uses 4) and the quarterback warren moon who was fantastic wasnt even considered by the nfl, he played in the cfl with edmonton eskimos for years before going to houston
NY Giants MLB, California Golden Seals NHL, Oakland Raiders NFL, San Diego Chargers NFL, Atlanta Flames NHL, Atlanta Thrashers NHL, Montreal Maroons NHL, Winnepeg Jets NHL, Milwaukee Braves MLB, Boston Braves MLB, St. Louis Cardinals NFL..................
I remember when the Hartford Whalers came to Carolina. There were a lot of pissed off people in my area because they kicked out a popular minor league team for them to be able to play. Then, they moved to Raleigh and left our area without a minor league team.
Next going away is the Oakland A's going to Las Vegas becoming the Vegas A's. See no hope in Vegas either with an ownership too poor to compete with the rest of baseball.
The reason for the Baltimore Colts leaving was a lack of fan support. That was "BOVINE EXCREMENT " !!!! No matter how bad the Colts played Momorial Stadium was always filled , they never had to give away tickets to fill the empty seats. No other city had the type of fan support between a football team and the people of a city , win or lose we supported the team and the worse the Colts played the more the fans showed up and the louder we cheered and to have them stolen from us by a drunken lying half wit. I personally don't approve of the way we got our team (The Ravens) but at least Cleveland kept their name , colors , history and memorabilia. Baltimore also lost the Baltimore Clippers (our Hockey team) and the Baltimore Bullets (our Basketball team). The league's sighted lack of fan support to take the Clippers and the bullets from us. The Colts , Clippers and Bullets were almost always televised and for that too happen they had to be a sellout at Momorial Stadium on the Civic Center (now CFG BANK ARENA).
