In this video, we turn down the dovetail on a belt sander to give the barrel a more sporter contour and cleaner lines. We finish things up by applying our Zinc Phosphate to a few metal parts. Other than drilling and tapping for the scope mount, our metal work is done.

I think it is importanant to note here that if you are looking for a scout configuration, that part you all are sanding off is a perfect weaver rail and those pin holes are a great way to keep your weaver scout scope mounts from moving on you.

This is a great series! I especially liked the shortening of the barrel and the re-crowning.

@MrAnynoumous A "nagant" will usually be about $100. A "Mosin Nagant" on the other hand, can be from $60-$400. Your average 91/30 will be about $100.

Don't know if it's been said yet, but peening the pins in would have eliminated the gaps in the finished product. The round end of the ball-peen hammer is underrated.

@SacoreyRugger I MIG welded, you get a hair line crack around it anyway. Maybe with more heat on the barrel like brazing or TIG welding. But like he said, its no big deal.

your doing the same thing i am wanting to do but making my own bolt and im using the ati scope mount and ati synthetic stock. Im just using the gun for deer hunting though. i am going to polish the bolt and possibly jewel it. The one thing i really want to do is parkerize it but dont have the equipment and no one around her does it anymore. theyll only teflon coat it and its way outta my price range. Im gonna be 450 bucks in including the price of the gun itself.

@Iraqveteran8888 saw another vid where someone removed the sight and used 22mm base rings on that dovetail to mount a scoutscope. Looked pretty neat.

@travis199urkul That is what it is called. A bastard file is a file that has the cutting grooves that run in two different directions, instead of them all being running the same direction, parallel.

@Iraqveteran8888 when the guy from midway was filling in the locking screw holes on a mauser i think thats what he did, but when he was filling scope holes he did it with a set screw and filed off the head i think, if you wanted to look at midway usa's series on it for some different ideas

No one seems to have mentioned another option,... After installing the pins, turn down the apps and fill it with a might or tight welder, then do your material removal. Will leave a virtually undetectable seam. Just a thought. I do a lot of fabrication so I'm always fixing and repairing with themwelder.

I am not a gun smith or a machinist, I am however a hobby blacksmith. I was wondering... the rivets for the rear site that didn't fit flush.... could you have secured them from the other side from moving while clamping the barrel firmly into a vise or something.... heat the end of the rivet and peen the hell out of it to fill in the drilled hole better? I make tongs which requires making a rivet and fitting it... that's just what came to mind when I saw this part.

@TheSouthernGentleman The gun is going to shoot as good as you can shoot it. Putting a scope on it will help you shoot thus improving the "accuracy", but the gun will shoot just as accurate without it.

@aerodynamicband You can use a M38 type front sight works the best. Though your barrel would have to be turned down.

When blueing the barrel unit, do you cover up the inner barrel at all? Or do you(or the manufactury doing the job) just spill the chemicals all through the barrel?

@ExtraFungus

Way to rough for my taste. I just did one, I used 1/8 brass rod which is slightly oversized and hammered it in, then I used a Bastard file to round it off. I blued the barrel so you can see the pins but they are attractive looking with no gaps and if I had done duracoat, they would disappear.

Okay so I understand you used zinc phosphate to give it that nice finish and that is what i would like to do to mine that i am finishing right now. How exactly do you do it and did you just buy some brownells zinc parkerizing? And did you have to tape off the inside of the action so it didn't get finished? Thanks a lot!
