It has a number of important considerations like slowing down your speed, decreasing your pressure and shortening the delivery time.

I wondered how long after a marathon you should have a massage?

Good question, it really depends on the condition of the tissue, sometimes you can actually see what looks like bugs are crawling along the veins, not a good time to massage as the tissue is dehydrated, overactive and general massage techniques will be too demanding, but applying mild easy stretching, light vibration helps to calm it down. If you have a new runner, first timer they might need a bit more time before your hands can get on them, but for a seasoned runner it is quite different, if they are not displaying anything that would indicate the tissue is stressed you are good to go almost as soon as they walk through the door.

When it comes to sports massage, immediately after the athletic event is optimal to enhance muscle-specific recovery. This is why you normally see massage stations at the end of a marathon. This example would best be categorized as Post-Event Sports Massage. Sports-Specific Training needs to be paired up with Sport-Specific Recovery for optimal results to the athlete. The three components of Sports Massage are (1) Pre-event (2) Intra-event and (3) Post-event. Using these three in the proper manner can help an athlete move better, perform better, and recover faster. I hope that really clarifies it for you. If not hop on our channel we go over this.
