NOTES AND HASHTAGS:
Steps to get ready to shoot an unfamiliar event:
1. Do a little research about the event/situation.
2. Talk to whomever asked you to shoot the event and find out what they need and want.
3. Find someone who connected to the event and learn more what to expect.
4. If possible, visit the venue ahead of time and get an idea regarding lighting and composition options.
Bonus: Be aware of the spectators and don't block their view.

I find that going to one of the practices sessions before the event helps. Gives you a good idea of the lighting, positions and routines.

To help plan your movements and shot locations, apparatus progression is always Vault-->Bars-->Beam-->Floor, although the starting apparatus is always different.

I would like to give another advice after hearing of changing the lens in the venue. Due to the chalk the athletes are using be aware that there is a lot of it in the air. So changing lenses could lead to catch some of the chalk inside the camera. So avoid changing inside, do it outside if possible.

I have 2 gymnasts. 70-200 mm 2.8fs. Also, gymnastics meets require NO FLASH. Super important. I play with awb and the indoor lighting settings on my canon.

1/1000 for tumbling floor pass but really depend on the lighting and ISO in the 10000 range. Quality enough to freeze motion but noisy when pixel peep🤷‍♂️. Beam can be slower in 1/800 and sometime it’s position close enough to work w 85mm f1.8

My venue has awful lighting. Thanks for the reply!

Just want to add something what happened to me with a f2.8. With f1.8 be careful, if the athlete does a split jump and you are shooting from front, it could happen that the toes are in focus instead of the eyes. If anybody has a hint how to avoid false focus while being in action, please tell me.
