Talk about TIME in Italian
Days of the week
lunedì (Monday)
martedì (Tuesday)
mercoledì (Wednesday)
giovedì (Thursday)
venerdì (Friday)
sabato (Saturday)
domenica (Sunday)
Pay attention not to forget that:
- the first 5 have the accent at the end
- they are all written using lower-case letters
- they are all masculine except for Sunday
Now, an important thing that you have to know is that the days of the week are preceded by the definite article or by the preposition DI if we refer to something that happens every week on that day.
For example:
La domenica (= ogni domenica) mangio sempre molto, però di lunedì (= ogni lunedì) vado in palestra. (On Sundays I always eat a lot, but every Monday I go to the gym)
Instead, if we refer to something that happened only on a specific day, than we won’t use the article neither the preposition.
For example:
Martedì sono andata dal medico, mentre venerdì ho cenato al ristorante. (On Tuesday I went to the doctor, while on Friday I had dinner at the restaurant)
Months of the year
gennaio (January)
febbraio (February)
marzo (March)
aprile (April)
maggio (May)
giugno (June)
luglio (July)
agosto (August)
settembre (September)
ottobre (October)
novembre (November)
dicembre (December)
Don’t forget that also the months are written with lower-case letters!
Moreover, they are generally preceded by the preposition A.
For example:
A luglio vanno tutti al mare. (Everyone goes to the sea in July)
Oh, don’t forget that the preposition A is used also with time and festive days like Natale (Christmas), Pasqua (Easter), Capodanno (New Year’s Eve), etc.
For example:
A Capodanno mi sveglio sempre alle 8 e mezza! (On the first day of the year, I always get up at half past 8!)

Dates
The order to write or tell dates in Italian is: day + month + year
For example:
Il primo allunaggio è avvenuto il 20 luglio 1969. (The first landing on the Moon happened on July, 20 1969)
By writing, you can also use the abbreviation with only numbers.
For example:
Il primo allunaggio è avvenuto il 20/07/69.
Seasons
primavera (Spring)
estate (Summer)
autunno (Autumn)
inverno (Winter)
With the seasons, you should use the preposition IN (o DI)
For example:
In estate le giornate sono più luminose. (In Summer, days are lighter)
Particular cases
We use… With…
A the words «alba» and «tramonto» (sunrise and sunset)
DI / definite article «mattina», «pomeriggio», «sera», «notte» (morning, afternoon, evening, night)
NEL centuries and years
NEL the word «weekend»
definite articles expressions referring to past or future (l’anno scorso, il mese prima, la settimana dopo…)
For example:
All’alba c’è sempre un’atmosfera di pace, mentre al tramonto c’è un’atmosfera romantica. (At sunrise there’s always a peaceful atmosphere, while at sunset there’s always a romantic atmosphere)
Preferisco lavorare di mattina piuttosto che la sera perché ho più energie. (I prefer working in the morning rather than in the evening because I have more energies)
La Guerra del Golfo è scoppiata nel XX secolo, più precisamente nel 1990. (The Gulf War broke out in the 20th century, precisely in 1990)
Vado sempre in pizzeria nel weekend. (I always go to pizzeria on the weekend)
