Spotify's -$1,000,000,000 Problem

Spotify is the largest music streaming platform in the world. They have over 550 million users, and generate ~$12,000,000,000 in revenue a year. However, Spotify has never turned a profit in it's life. The business is actually down -$4.4B since it started.
How does that make sense? How can a company be so successful, yet massively unprofitable? In episode 9 of the Share Your Screen podcast, that is the exact question we set out to solve.
How did Spotify get into this mess? What prevents them from getting out of it? And how can they fix it?
This topic was first brought to our attention by a WSJ article reviewing the business of Spotify's Podcast division, and coverage by Phil DeFranco

Loved filming this episode! It is so interesting to look at a business like Spotify and realize there is such a gray area. There are so many ways to measure success but ultimately the stakeholders who want to make money are the ones who always come out on top.

Thank you for sharing. A lot of Independent Artists will now sadly understand why it's so hard to earn from their music. 🎶🎵

We need a discord or something! I have too many thoughts lmao I think Spotify could seriously fill the niche that MTV left in the 2000’s. It has strong brand recognition and loyalty that they could really leverage with artists and fans in a big way. Having separate channels on the app in the style of Max for different audiences could be huge. I’m thinking a pop channel with a fan voted playlist that artist promote in the style of TRL, behind the music video shoots and deep dives into albums with the artist on release day. Also getting the rights to concerts and premiering them on Spotify could also be huge and has a higher return on investment if they could land it.

I used to think the same thing about Alex Cooper in CHD - I never listened and thought it was really shallow, however…. I've listened to her on and off the last year & she has evolved tremendously. some deeper & more nuanced conversations that I think you would be interested in reassessing. Love the pod! Keep it up. Excited to see how you both grow :)

I love the fyp idea of scrolling thru snippets of music. When Im looking for new music on Spotify, a lot of the time I scroll to 20-30 seconds into the song to see if I'll like it.

Ok I totally think Spotify is smart for investing in podcasts, but they need a better strategy! They could even do a discover program where they find up and coming hosts and shows, and then put a team around them to boost and market the show like a label would do! (idk maybe they're already doing that, but I think they could do more to boost and hype up popular shows)

When I was younger Top of the Pops was a huge deal. I would love to see something like this in audio for Independent Artists. Absolutely. The fans opinion counts.

i think not having sofia is what is killing call her daddy , see the cancelled podcast with brooke and tana has a core fanbase that only wants them on each episode anyway so having a guest is not as important... just like what alex and sophia had back then cause u only needed the main 2 girls but now its like every call her daddy episode has a A list celeb in it and theres only so many A list celebs spotify can contact for a interview with call her daddy. theres no longevity for call her daddy its basically running on the call list of spotify cause the show is missing a co host that was so central to the dynamic not only central but literal every story in the beginning of call her daddy was sofias storys and she was kinda more of the center so now its like not even a podcast alex is basically a more relatable talk show host for whatever celeb is on a promo campaign that week

I love love loved this convo. I learned so much once again. I never realized how much of a differentiator carpool Karaoke and Hot Ones were within that genre. I have also found the Call Her Daddy content very 1 dimensional and forced. I never really found it interesting. I always wonder if Alex gets tired of the lack of depth, or is that just her. Last but least, I loved Nicky's feature ideas for Spotify, I would love to see comments.

Off Topic, but kinda a HOT Topic rn,,, With everything going on with danny masterson and ashton kutcher, im seeing a trend of censorship of certain words. Do you guys have any opinions on the censorship of actual words like SA and R? I understand when the words are altered for tiktok but im starting to see a trend of those actual abbreviations be used in real life. Makes me wonder if theres any societal affect or if theres any weight thats being taken off of a serious issue!

Sometimes your ideas are honestly so good I get worried about companies, or people who work for companies, that you talk about are going to hear you and steal them 😅😂!!! Kidding but not. I tell my girlfriend your ideas and she says “they’re just saying these things out in the open?!” Seriously so genius. You guys honestly have been inspiring me each week to get more and more involved in becoming a creator/ My future because I know I have it in me. I know nothing about TikTok, but I’ve been using RU-vid for a very long time, but I am willing to learn and get with the times. (I’m 31) I wait for your upload each week now so thank u for being consistent with content!! Y’all make me wanna go back to school and take Marketing classes😆 ✨🫶❤️ will continue listening and learning!
