Hey Vinyl Community, here is episode three on the Spotlight series. This episode is about Appalachian Folk Legend, Dock Boggs. He is one of the seminal figures within Folk music. His banjo playing was like no other and to quote Greil Marcus from Dock Boggs in Thomas Jefferson's Virginia, "Dock Boggs was a singer and banjo player who sounded as if his bones were coming through his skin every time he opened his mouth; that was the sound that drew people to him."

So happy I found this video. I got the anthology of American folk music when I was about 23 now I’m 40 and Dock Boggs was the standout artist on it for me. I heavily downloaded his music, I own the one vinyl you showed first as well. He is so underrated. Theres nothing I love more than driving the rural route home from work I take every day and listening to him as I drive. Thanks for making this video

I’m glad you enjoyed it! He’s my favorite as well! I’m 40 as well. It would a dream of mine to visit the areas that he talks about in his music. I’m in CA and far away from those places but oddly enough I was born in Roanoke VA which isn’t too far from those places.

Thanks for making this, man. Just recently came across his music. As someone who's been through some fairly troubled water, it feels weirdly comforting to hear an old feller singing about his own woes in the way he does. As someone starting to try and get into music myself privately, I really like how real and raw he is. I've always liked that kind of stuff. But it was the realness of Country Blues that got me at first, as someone who was stuck to the bottle for years. Definitely knew what he was singing about in that one. Alcoholics can be like fruit flies, going where the juice goes. But then sometimes there's the few who are still there when the bottles are all empty. But it's funny, I started listening to his music just recently when I fell into a downward spell. I sometimes just find melancholy music with lyrics like these to hide away from God sometimes when I just feel yuck about myself and how I'm doing. But then I heard Prodigal Son and Calvary and it just kind of made me smile and laugh a bit. Because it kinda felt like God was saying "Yep, I'm still here with you." Idunno, just a funny detail I guess lol. But yeah anyway, It's nice to wonder about a person from the music they make, but sometimes it's just nice to hear about the person's life like this.
