We can identify upper pitchers by the tendrils? Are those the stem thing connecting the pitcher to the leaf?

That’s right. Uppers develop a twirl. If there’s a twig to cling on to they will wrap around it as they develop. Otherwise it acts as a spring to help prevent sudden forces on the leaf in gusty winds. That’s a theory anyway.
