January poses a lot of challenges for carp fishing, with many anglers shifting their focus to pike and perch in the colder months. Now, add an Arctic vortex expected to hit the UK and temperatures are set to plummet to -6. Discover how much of an impact this would have when fishing a low-stock water like The Pan in this latest Spotlight episode.

Seeing how you approach sessions that are tricky are much more beneficial to me than watching someone catch 30 fish at B1. Really interesting thanks

Enjoyed that Mark, it was real winter fishing and think a lot of us winter anglers could relate to that session. Looks a beautiful lake, certainly some stunning fish in there. Well done and tight lines all 🎣👍

I like the logic of your thought processes. I think you were doing the right thing searching, following the sun, checking margins and the middle, baiting light. You may well have been close to fish but sometimes they shut up shop, go torpid when temperatures are on the drop. Cold blooded creatures they cannot process and digest food so well anyway when temperatures bottom out. I can see why there would be good fish in there with crays to eat too. Not a wasted session at all because you learnt a lot about the lake in a way maybe your couldnt in summer with water more coloured and more anglers preventing you moving about. I am sure it’s pieces in the jigsaw towards success when you return. Such trips are never wasted, blanks aren’t a waste of time, especially if you work to find out about the underwater morphology too. They are another step closer to catching that well earned fish. The majority want things easy, almost on a plate these days. You even see people on media asking for tips such as what swim, where are the features, bite times, what baits and rigs to use, the precise spot to fish, the number of wraps out. For me they don’t get it. Back in the day there was often no one to ask those things of, and those who knew would never divulge hard earned knowledge anyway. I have watched a few videos recently from well known successful anglers also tackling more difficult low stock pits, anglers like Ritchie McDonald, including one by Terry Hearn fishing a lake with just 3 fish in it. They didn’t have immediate lucky success. They used the same thought processes, trying to spot fish, climbed trees to identify areas which may have been fed upon, they tried to work out patrol routes, fish behaviour, check the location of natural food larders. All these things ultimately after many rod hours and blank nights resulted eventually in catching amazing fish and a level of excitement, sense of achievement impossible from fishing a highly stocked “ fish by numbers” venue, where catching is almost guaranteed if you copy the going method. The most satisfaction of all comes from applying experience to learn how to learn, unlock the lakes secrets, the movement patterns of the fish, through careful observation. Then, when success finally comes your way, its all the more rewarding because of the process, the effort you went through. Of course listen to what others may tell you too. Some may be well intentioned, some a trick to send you down a blind alley. But still do your own fact finding process anyway. If I was to take on board a “how to catch on this lake” instruction manual from the net, if I did copy the precise tactics of others, choose the swim, rig, bait that way, cast to the big tree at 18 wraps to catch one, for me I may as well have well sat with that other guy on a tutorial, picked up his rod and played the fish in on that. Would it truly be my fish? It just wouldn’t feel like that at all to me. Whereas when you go back again for another session or two, or three, and ultimately catch one of those lovely fish, how great will that feel? All the better for having earned it too!😊

Thoroughly enjoyed this , well produced I’m limited to short day sessions but had a nice 15lb common this week I’ve got to start using my bushwacker…….. I got it specifically for one swim , then turned up only to find some kindly soul had broken the overhanging branch off ……. Surprisingly the carp don’t hang about in that spot anymore 😂
