Spotted Orchid; Easy propagation tutorial 

You know Malcolm, I'd watch you boil water and steep a bag of tea....just to hear your banter! But what you did right here is my favorite content. Gardeners World is so predictable that you know they'll divide snowdrops " in the green" for the thousandth time this March. And for sure, Monty won't even break wind to liven it up!! I'm like most other folk who have commented so far, in that I love learning about ways to make more plants. Especially when it's unexpected or a challenging new way. My favorite parts of last year's tours around the nursery, was when you showed how the crew propagated things. It was a way for you to tell us more about your entertaining nursery experiences, while also giving us valuable tips and techniques! I love this shit!! 🤪

Oh I sure wish there will be more like this, I really really miss the nursery videos. Plant propagation and everything that had to do with the nursery was the best content on youtube. I watched every single video you ever posted and took notes :) true story!

I enjoy your tutorials. After watching the one you did on Delphinium crown bud cuttings I had a go myself on a white Delphinium that I had and now I have fifteen. I think I'm going to have to start a nursery if I keep watching you.

I hope you will do more tutorials, you get to the point with no padding out like garden programmes on tv. I also did some delphinium bud cuttings last year and they all took. I had enough to give to friends and family so I know your advice works. Keep on doing what you do best, a few swear words or the odd fart just make it natural.

Thank you for this. I have been longing to grow purple spotted/marsh orchids for ages. You have given me the courage to try. As for Hostas!!!!! Slug and snail food, however hard you try. Look forward to more tutorials from you.

Orchids are difficult to grow from seed because the seed is so small - like dust - that there is no nourishment present to power a growing/germinating embryo. Hence orchid seed needs to be 'invaded' by naturally occuring fungi in the soil. The embryo uses the mycelial network to draw nutrients from the soil to grow. Once it has put down its own roots and can fend for itself, the fungus isn't really necessary anymore, but can hang around to form further mycorhizal associations.

I was disappointed in the disclaimer for uncouth language at the beginning of the video, if that was me talking there would be fffing and blinding throughout. Apart from than complaint, I'm happy with whatever videos you put out. Any of your extensive knowledge is going to be better than my piss poor knowledge of gardening and the english language I have. I've learnt most of my gardening through watching your videos. Keep up the great work.

This "happy accident" of propegation, Could it have anything to do with the existing micro biology on the existing potted plant root system. A kind of symbiosis. Anyone with any thoughts would be interesting.

As I am not ambitious enough to try the whole flasking on Agar routine, watching you has sparked inspiration to set the pot in an out of the way location, surrounded by a few pots of compatible plants, and let the seeds do their own thing. Thank you for the tutorial. Common orchids make me feel guilty. When we got our smallholding I built a load of beds over what turned out to be a prime area for them.

Hi I have just bought 8 common spotted orchids in the green to transplant in my wilded lawn I.need to ask how far apart to plant and is it ok to mow them late sept ?

Hey Malcolm, hope you are well. Given the cost of living crisis for many people in the UK, including your viewers. Is there any milage in someone at Eggleston doing a 10 minute slot or even a 30 minute special on how to grow food in our Northern climate, leeks, sprouts etc. Most people dont have the luxury of a green house so just the stuff that goes in the ground would be useful. Cheers.
