In this video I take on the challenge of spray painting the Canon FTb-QL SLR I repaired in my last upload. I also show the process of replacing the old leatherette with new full grain leather, and work on a matching lens for the camera body. Finally, someone is completely honest about how awful it can be to paint something. The end result looks amazing though, and I wish more things had embossed legends rather than paint on plastic.

Yeah I've been trying to think of a way to deal with the paint on plastic issue. I think they're somehow screen printed on from the factory. I've seen some methods where people print on to some kind of transparent transfer film. It might hold up if a topcoat was applied over it. I appreciate the feedback, and thanks for watching.

Yeah as I mentioned in another comment, filming the video was helpful in ensuring the completion of the project. If I do this again, I think I could mitigate a lot of the frustration I experienced in this first attempt. I'm honestly not sure what I would have to charge for something like this to be profitable (assuming the result was good enough) it's certainly a tedious process. Thanks for watching.

Oh god I loved this. You nail the experience of faffing with these old cameras and forgetting some minute detail 3 steps back. I only ever did repairs and reskinning leather. Painting seems to be a whole new level of faff.. I love it! ❤

Repair is a lot less intimidating than it seems before you get into it. If you want to try it out practice on a broken camera by taking it apart and putting it back together again. Pictures/video for tricky areas helps quite a bit. You'd be surprised how quickly you get the hang of it. Thanks for watching.

Impressive transformation! Good job bud! Here's a few tips I learned from restoring cameras: - For the clear window, you could use some HPD super-gold CA glue. It's designed to not fog up, and is used in the model making scene for clear cockpit and windows on scaled models. Blowing on glued area while it dries also helps to avoid fogging. - And for the leather cover, use some 3M 300LSE (or similar) double sided tape. It's non-toxic, easy to apply, very thin and even, and leaves no mess.

I was actually looking for videos of painting the canon FTb with common spray paints a couple months ago. Painted mine white and black with blue and red details similar to the Apollo Saturn V, Came out beautiful but it still has lots of imperfections. Great work

Oh boy, I feel with you. When I am into a camera I always start with learning how things are assembled and use to work together. Usually I learn this by opening and assembling it several times until it is, as it was before. 😅😅 Especially the double helicoid construction is really shitty. Each time it takes me an hour to get it back, as it was before. Nice video though. 😊

Yeah I don't have as much experience with lenses as I do working on SLR bodies, and the Canon's are particularly finnicky. I've worked on some Minolta glass in the past that was a lot more intuitively put together. There's certainly a lot of trial and error involved for me especially since I don't stick to one brand. Sometimes I forget how certain things go back together and I have to relearn it. Thanks for watching.

Ive done this to about 4 FT cameras.. the best way to soften the paint is by using wire brushes and brass cleaner and painting a thin clear coat over it and itll takes longer and will keep the interior safe as well.... now youve got me thinking about recording myself do this next project Good stuff for sure! .

You need a hvlp gun, automotive paint and clearcoat. The problem was the spraypaint. You know what you are doing. Thanks for sharing.

The rough paint on the bottom plate is probably due to the paint droplets partially drying before it hits the surface, due to being out door....brilliant transformation....love your channel...!!

I bet you're right about the paint. I don't remember exactly at this point, but I was painting in direct sun on a number of occasions. The paint probably flash dried immediately as you said. I recently purchased an airbrush so any further painting will be done indoors from now on. Hopefully I encounter fewer issues. Thanks for watching.

I painted my bike cranks today and I hang them up on a stick/bike stand or anything with some wire, so they're not close to the ground and didn't pick up any leaves or dirt.

Back in the day, I had that camera's cheaper little brother, the TL-QL. Wish I still had it. Those late '60s Canons were a nice alternative to more costly cameras like the Nikons and Pentaxes.

the metal doodad ring thing is for auto appature from the camera, inside the camera there is a thing that pushes it up and down to change the appature to one that is exposed

Ended up looking pretty good man! Take a look into Cerakote - it's used for guns and I'm pretty sure its what Mark Griswold and Sheudocamera use for their resprays.

The adhesive that I’m told most repair pros use for reattaching the leatherette is Pliobond. I’ve used it with good results but not on real leather so we’d have to take the can’s word on that. It’s great because it dries flexible and holds the covering onto the camera just strong enough to keep it together until you want to get it apart. It’s also not so great because the smell is obnoxious and it is impressively proficient at gluing its own container shut. If what you’re using holds so strong you can’t get the leather back off without damaging it, maybe Pliobond’s benefits will outweigh its annoyances. Although I guess you don’t reattach leather after you’ve peeled it off? I’d imagine it’s difficult to clean the old glue off.

The great thing about the water based contact adhesive that I use (it's called aquilium) is that it holds pretty strong but not so strong that it can't be removed with relative ease if the camera needed to be stripped again. The residue is easy to peel off hard surfaces like the metal camera body, kind of like elmers glue off your fingertips. As far as longevity goes it seems to hold up pretty well, but I'd imagine might not do as well with extreme temperature swings (I'm not sure what it's rated for by the manufacturer). I'll look into getting some pliobond though, I can see myself making use of that in certain applications over what I currently have. I appreciate the information, thank you for watching.

Thanks, and yeah the whole repainting cameras thing is definitely polarizing. If you're referring to the gold watch it's a Timex. Unfortunately I can't find a model number anywhere on the watch. I bought it second hand from a junk bin at an antique shop for $2, so I don't have any of the original packaging or anything.

Having painted a couple of Canon P’s, I can tell you it’s better to remove the nickel plating first. It’s easy to do if you have a small power supply, copper rod, vinegar and non ionized salt. Still good work though. The FTb is such and underrated camera.

I would try to look for pliobond when it comes to contact cement, it comes off with alcohol, this is the same stuff the camera repair men would use

Yeah I had a few other people recommend pliobond. The only issue with using that is if for some reason adjustments need to be made, the alcohol will completely ruin the leather. The water based contact adhesive doesn't require a solvent for removal. If I were using a synthetic covering I'd go with pliobond. Thanks for watching.

Haven't tried it but another viewer suggested reverse electroplating using a power source and vinegar/salt solution. I'm sure there are some videos of the process around on RU-vid. I'll probably try it myself at some point in a future project. Thanks for watching.

The camera was tested in between the repair and this project. Since completing I haven't had an opportunity to go shoot with it yet. I have another setup I pretty much shoot with exclusively, so I'll probably put a roll or two through this one and pass it along.

Good question, the answer is you don't really. If you're lucky enough to have someone in your vicinity that has the knowledge to repair cameras, you may be able to reach out to apprentice under them. However for most people doing this nowadays, you just start by pulling things apart and putting them back together again. Eventually you get the hang of how everything works. I recommend starting something of little value that you know to be broken. If you end up making it worse it's not a big deal. That's how I started out. A suggestion for your next project: To increase the difficulty, just do the opposite. Buy a cheap "Holga" and make it look like a Canon.

Assuming the lettering is imprinted into the camera body/dials it should be pretty easy. You can just go over it once or twice with the new paint, and then wipe away the excess with rubbing alcohol like I did in this video. Some kind of enamel will probably hold up the best over time. If the lettering is screened on, customizing it would be more difficult. The only way I can think to do it would be to remove the existing lettering and then have custom vinyl decals cut to replace them with (or to use as a mask/stencil for painting). Hope that helps.
