Hello, Chris I've been watching your videos for months now. We'll yesterday I thought I would try your method. I might add you make it look so easy , it must have come with years of experience. I've got to paint the whole interior of my house. I thought that I would start in a large walk-in closet and get some sense of feel for it. Now, I have painted in the past but with a brush and rollers. And i have painted with a sprayer but that's been many years ago and it was the backs of shopping centers. I did pretty good. But this entirely different. The ceilings are my worst, the walls I do pretty good. What I think I'm going to do is leave the spraying the ceiling to you professionals to this. I'll roll the ceilings and spray the walls. Thank you so much for your help in helping us non professionals. Take care, Don

I have done countless ceilings, flat textured or splatter. The best way to do them is back and forth across the shortest width with 50% overlap and enough pressure with no lines with a big tip like 515 or 517 with a 2' extension very much like you are doing. The problem I sometimes have is with furniture in the room which I typically shove against the wall and cover.It can be a challenge maintaining that continous back and forth pattern.If I need to mask anything I tend to use 12" paper, not 8'' as overspray does get past that. If the walls or trim are being done after then who cares. I always thought "holidays" were misses in the pattern. A heavy spot is usually called a "heavy". If its on a wall its a "sag" or "curtain".

Excellent video. Bought a refurbished X7 to finish 2300 square feet of basement. So I watched this video to get the the technique down in my head. Found the fog coat useful for priming in one direction and painting in the opposite direction along with which direction to paint a room. Will be interesting to walk 25 feet to get the perpendicular pattern.

Hey Chris, I sprayed Zinser 123 primer yesterday in a garage we had taped/finished and Behr exterior semi-gloss finish coat today going opposite directions like you did - I even got a mask like yours & can remove replace with one hand now. I used a 517 tip with a 2 ft extension for part and a 8 inch extension for some shelves. The 310 tip plugged up so I went back to the 517. It came out good. It really helped to see that done. I'm in Illinois and we just slipped this in before the cold

I just read your comment of trim first then walls then ceiling? That's almost opposite of me. I do ceilings ,trim then walls. Paint falls with gravity always work from top down celling,crown,trim then walls last because wall paint is easier to cut a line with. I have 30 years in as well
@ferznator

***** I agree sometimes is better to paint the crown than cut it, specially if is stained, taping the ceilins after would be a bit of a paint, but is that regular yellow tape? i might be mistaken

You're doing the best you can with what you have, but I'm going to be giving you a sample product to test that will blow your mind. You can spray that ceiling without having to mask. The dust won't get in your lungs. You can then tell your followers what you think. This is what you call shock and awe in a positive way :-)

Hi. I've been painting for a good while and have recently been considering buying an airless spayer, so I'm quite new on spraying. (I'm actually considering buying the Titan 440 impact). My main concern is finish quality. In other of your videos you mention that you always spray trim for a better finish. You also spray walls and ceilings when the situation allows it. I was told that you needed to back roll for a better finish. What's your take on finish quality of an airless sprayer? I know for real nice finishes in woodwork shops they'll use an HVLP.
@keithhoofard5844
@keithhoofard5844 8 лет назад
Excellent, real world instructions. Should you always spray trim (base and doors moldings) in place? I'm putting down new hardwood throughout, and replacing all base and all door moldings (going with Craftsman style). Will good (Frog) tape seal off my new floors adequately?

Hey! I started my own interior painting business and I am starting to get busy to keep up with demand. I've always loved the cutting in and rolling aspect of painting, and vowed I'd never go to spraying because I enjoy cutting in so much, but I am ready for the change. I appreciate a lot of your videos and have helped me professionally, so thank you! My questions are: 1. Does extra spray not get on the walls when you only mask that much? Or is this a masking job portrayed here that would be done if painting walls after? Follow-up question to #1, if painting walls after do you even mask off if there is no crown moulding? 2. When spraying walls do you still cut in by hand? Or do you tape off the ceiling and baseboards and spray. Thanks~!

At 2:50 you mights Nicked the wall slightly ;) , Ive gotta say I never liked the idea of interior spray painting because it seemed to me that the overspray would get on everything. If you werent also replacing the carpet would it be necessary to drop cloth? Also no overspray gets on the wall at all with the setup your using? I know its airless so less "dust". I gotta say Im impressed, I have a big painting job coming up and Ive been researching ways to timesave, Im likeing what Im seeing.

I couldn't find any videos on priming and just curious if you approach priming any differently. When using an airless sprayer do you still do one prime coat and two finish coats with all coats having a 50% overlap? Thanks again and keep it up!

Here in the Northeast, I am getting many requests to remove popcorn ceilings and refinish them with a flat finish. At present, I (and everyone else) must scrape off most of the texture (very difficult if it has been previously painted), skim the ceiling manually three times, sand, prime and paint with two coats of flat finish paint. It is a very time consuming and expensive process. I have seen one or two guys spray compound on ceilings using an airless sprayer and then swirl them the old fashioned way. I'm wondering it it would be OK to speed up the process by getting the compound on the ceiling faster using an airless sprayer. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

So we're spraying a big room (40x25) with 20' high vaulted ceilings (10 in 12) and a level 5 finish. We're going to be working off of a 4'x10' scaffolding with wheels. Hello again Chris, The house I'm buying has long water stains in several rooms on first floor. This was from a bathroom "flood" years prior I'm told. I know why wasn't it fixed? They fixed nothing. Could I benefit from spraying two coats of SW Superpaint over their Eminence to save time priming those stains? I know you aren't a paint rep but have real world experience to back up what you say. I'm new to spraying and really value learning from your videos. Any advice would be appreciated. Keep up the awesome work. Thanks.

What is your estimated square foot coverage (first coat and second coat combined) per gallon of paint using the airless sprayer? Also, how is the quality of finish? Do you have to rollerbrush a third coat on the wall or 2 coats of airless sprayed paint is of good quality finish already? Reason I am asking these questions is I am quoting a big job that needs to be done very quickly and I am planning to use the airless sprayer to save time. Thanks for the response! Excellent videos, by the way!

I tried this but to other people out there you need more paper than what he has on the walls. Because you get a bunch of white splatter that will be on the upper walls. If you extend that brown paper another 12 inch's it helps a lot or lay plastic. You can see he nicked the wall at like 2:45. I love Chris' videos though but just my experience is put a more paper on the walls.

Chris, love the vids man. I just bought a raised ranch the has been seriously beat on and needs paint in every room, ceiling, trim, etc. About 1600 sq ft...912 upstairs. I'm not going to move in for 6 wks so I can get it all done. I have fairly simple plan in my head. Flat white ceilings (currently popcorn, want to strip them 1st), I assume it will need 2 coats on all ceilings. I want to do the trim (white, is it semi-gloss?) Then just a medium gray walls throughout....where do I start, the trim? Then ceiling, then walls? I've seen you say Graco in some videos and titan 440/441 in others. I'm gonna try and do it all myself. Sorry for long post. You made it look so easy and effortless (aka why you are a pro)...any guidance I'd appreciate. Should I rent a sprayer? Just buy one since so much to paint? I'm in MA in case it matters....tons to do. Close in 15 days and trying to plan ahead.

Yes sorry for redudant question since was covered. i think i watched it. If inrecall correctly you said trim(always spray) then ceiling and the walls (if unoccupied, which in my case is true). Yes be glad to follow you and what not. I'm a pure novice rookie but trying to save money by putting in the labor. The entire house needs an overhaul, hence why I'm trying to do as much as i can. Do you recommend buying one of the afformentioned sprayers or just renting them? Would you go with that Titan or the Graco? Both are airless arent they? Sorry to bombard you. I appreciate the responses and your videos of course. Once i complete it, I will let you know the outcome. Again, i know you are busy. Thanks

HI i had two questions i was wondering what is typical of the amount of gallons do you use to do a room ? Im really new to all this painting and i used 1 gallon just for a 12 by 14 ceiling and wasn't sure if that was normal or a lot for just the ceiling . And also im getting alot of over spray i have a new tip 517 , new filters and a 440i and i been having the pressure around 2000 but i cant get rid of the over spray. im not sure if maybe it could be the gun it self or what. But thanks for the videos im actually learning a lot to paint my own house!!

Hey Chris, I know you are partial to SW paint and it is quality, just pricey for the average consumer. Have you ever used Glidden's ceiling paint that goes on pink. I have and like the concept. I wish other brands did this. I have a bunch to paint and would like to spray this. Any idea how this paint would spray on? Any issues going on being pigmented? Thanks for any feedback if you have any experience with it and keep up the awesome videos.

Good stuff Chris I always learn something new watching your vids. Do you have drop clothes or something to protect the flooring? Did you paint the walls on this project as well prior to the ceiling? With a different colored ceiling then the walls do you paint the ceiling first or the walls typically? If rolling does this change your answer?

Chris, why don't you spay an undercoat first? Also how do you wash all surfaces with "sugar soap" or similar prior to painting?

Any reason you use the 3M Medium Mold and Lead Paint Removal Respirator vs 3M Medium Paint Project Respirator ?? Cheaper ?

When you mask do you just use the tape that’s attached to the paper? Or do you mask with just tape then put the tape attached to the paper?

Just a question"I'm spraying Ceilings with a 315 tip and then back rolling from one end to the other and seems to work well. I wanted to know should I try switching to 517 does that make it easier and will it save me time and material. save my neck and shoulders.

Do you use a whip hose and double swivels or do you just use a regular whip hose?
