I'm still fairly new to the industry - so I'm not an expert yet. However, three things that I noticed: 1. Whether to use fabric or not under your driveway depends a lot on the soils you have on site. When you do choose to use a fabric, we've always used the woven geotextile fabric (not the felt fabric). I believe the woven fabric provides more structural support (preventing the dirt below the base to pump up into the road/driveway). We use the felt fabric in applications where we encourage water to run (like over foundation drains or around perf pipe)... I think of the felt as more of a filter, and not structural. 2. I always put in a base layer before I add the top-coat. So, as already mentioned, the base could be 3" minus... or in some cases we've even used pit-run if we need to add some height to the driveway. The lower layer forms a solid, strong structural base. Then we top-coat the base with either 1" minus roadmix or 3/4" minus roadmix. 3. When working on roads and driveways, drainage is always a factor. This was a short driveway, so there's probably not too much you can do, but I always like to have some crown or grade on the driveway so that water will run off and not sit and form puddles (or even just soft spots). Well, I hope this is seen as helpful feedback and not seen as me trashing on you. The end result looked good - especially for your first driveway. Have you stopped back by? Now that's it has been a year, how did it hold up? PS- We also always compact the driveway with a roller (on both the base layer and top layer), which creates a nice smooth crust that helps the driveway hold up longer... but maintenance is always required eventually on all gravel driveways.

Great job man! It’s definitely always good to go with more rock than less on a new driveway install. I try to get 6”-10” of rock depending on how the ground is. If I can’t sell them on fabric I’ll use 3” base rock fist then top with 1”. It’s cool seeing another local contractor on here. We’ll have to collaborate on a project at some point. Keep up the good work

Thanks for your feedback. I know you have much more experience than I do with gravel driveways. I’d definitely be willing to work together on a future project!

Length ' x Width ' x Height ' (6" = 0.5) = CF / 27 = CY x 1.5 = estimated tons of rock.
@ThriftyGarage
@ThriftyGarage Год назад
Isn’t 1.5 a little steep? Maybe for sand or something more dense. Usually for decorative rock we use 1.1 to 1.2 to convert from yards to tons.

@@ThriftyGarage Your are correct. Some material is lighter. When the stone yard makes piles of 3/4" stone, dry it list at 2700 lb per cubic yard average (1.35 tons per cy). If I was in Arizona or only purchased in July that may be a good number. The water retention rate is pretty significant and you have the joy of paying for it. If you bid at 2700 lb and it works for you keep going. I am going to bid and order the higher rate (3000 lb per cy) and cover material cost and quantity for projects. Years ago I picked this up from a man that has been trucking for 50 years. My choice to listen to the old guys. The subject of using fabric under rock drives is an issue for me maybe because I am old. A heavy vehicle turning or future regrading or trench work on a site with fabric is a mess. For those reasons I prefer to cut 6 to 8 inches out, compact (30 year old virgin soil is probably pretty tight). Calculate and spread 6" deep of 3" base rock. Roll or compact that and then spread an additional 2" - 3" (calculated) of 3/4" gravel. Roll again. Fully loaded semis can now make 360 degree turns with no concerns. But I need to get on the cheap and fast method. Best regards.

I want to add a gravel drive and parking area from my existing drive to my back garage, about 200" long and 12" wide, till it opens up by the garage at about 18' wide. I'm using railroad ties as a border. Do you see any issues with simply cutting the grass as low as possible (scalping it), then spraying with grass killer, covered with landscaping fabric and then gravel? Drainage is great in the area and not a concern.

@ThriftyGarage 2 года назад
I would cut 1/3 off the grass, then spray weed killer. Once all of the color has left the grass then I would scalp and bag the grass. Depending on the material and drainage I don’t see an issue with building up the road. You may want fabric or larger stone for a base and finish it off with a 3/4” or 1” base material. With railroad ties I would go with a minimum depth of 6-8” of road material.

@@ThriftyGarage thanks for the quick reply. Once the grass is cut, sprayed, dead and scalped, a heavy landscaping would be put down over the entire area and the railroad ties along the edges and over the fabric. Then crushed limestone on top to about 1" below the top of the ties. Sounds like it work. Thanks again.

It looks really nice and you did a great job but definitely used too much gravel. the maximum I wouldn't use would be maybe 6 in at the most and then only in an area where it does seem to use up more . sometimes you might see the need for a little bit of larger Rock like a two or three in surge Stone if you have a area that is weak and doesn't want to tighten up then you could use the smaller gravel on the top and allow it to lock into the larger Stone and the largest stone will create a solid bed to work off of sort of like the fabric does. That's the only reason I would use that much Stone other than that looks real good and anytime that you can it is great to put a little bit of a crown on the driveway so water will run off either side and not stand usually requires a return trip to do a little touch up work and make it right

Great video man! Really enjoy stuff like this! I’m in the process of starting my own driveway repair/install and grading business. Looking to start out renting equipment but as far as transportation of the equipment I’m trying to figure out if I’d be better off getting a gooseneck trailer or dump trailer. I’m thinking a dump trailer because I can haul equipment and materials but I’ll also need to have enough room to haul a Kubota front loader tractor with a box blade. I’m not sure which route I should take.

Some rental places offer trailers at a reasonable price as well. See what offerings are nearby. I’m actually working on editing a video comparison between the Diamond C Equipment Trailer and the PJ Dump trailer. Be sure and check that out! If you have any business questions feel free to email me. Email can be found on the About page.

how much cost you the roll fabric and how many foot long and wide
@ThriftyGarage
@ThriftyGarage 3 года назад
I paid $100 for this roll. But it was partially used and bought second hand. Usually they are much more expensive. It was pretty wide, 15 feet I believe.

I just purchased a roll of woven for the same purpose from Lowes. 15' x 360' was $530.

What did you charge for this job ?
@ThriftyGarage
@ThriftyGarage 3 года назад
The costs in your region would depend on a variety of factors. Materials included the ground stabilization fabric and 4 loads of 1” minus crushed limestone (~15 yards each). Equipment and time required will vary as well depending on experience.
