This symposium highlights the challenges that many young adults with lupus experience when making the change from their pediatric to adult rheumatologists. Studies have shown that the majority (up to 68%) of these patients experience significant difficulties in the transition. This symposium includes the perspectives of two experts in the field who provide their thoughts and practical tools to get through this time in life.
Sharon Dowell, MD, PhD is a rheumatologist at Howard University Hospital. She discusses the steps that can be taken to make the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare as successful as possible. She describes this transition from the rheumatologists' point of view as well as the changes in expectations and responsibilities of the young adult patient.
Arnita Roberts-Christie, RN, BSN, MS is a Patient Engagement Liaison with GSK. She describes many of the tools that will help in this transition for young adults with lupus as well as their care providers.
Although this video focuses on young adults, there is great information for everyone living with lupus and for those who care about them.
The opinions and information of the presenters in this video are meant for educational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.
