My plan was to explore the Mid North in South Australia, adventuring riding through the Gilbert & Clare Valley up to Burra on my Honda CRF250 Rally.With the sun setting quickly a slight route variation made up some time. My farm stay host kindly showed me the way to my camping spot.
I reached Burra around lunch time and it was time to put some fuel in the tanks.The St Just cafe seemed popular and it did not disappoint with a delicious pie and coke. Burra is a historic tourist town with a rich history in South Australia. You can easily spend a whole day exploring all the historical sights, but with limited time I opted to for a quick stop at the mines and famous ruins.
The cottage was first photographed by iconic Australian landscape photographer, Ken Duncan, and rose to fame on the album cover of Midnight Oil’s ‘Diesel and Dust’ record. One of the great records of the 1980s.Known as the ‘Midnight Oil House’, this cottage has become one of Australia’s most photographed ruins. The Burra Burra Copper Mine was established in 1848 mining the copper deposit discovered in 1845. Miners and townspeople migrated to Burra primarily from Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Germany. The mine first closed in 1877, briefly opened again early in the 20th century and for a last time from 1970 to 1981.Today the town continues as a centre for its surrounding farming communities and, being one of the best-preserved towns of the Victorian era in Australia, as a historic tourist centre.
I headed back to Adelaide in the afternoon. A very good spring adventure ride for those interested in exploring this area. Safe travels!
