Our Spring Azaleas are bursting forth. It's something we always look forward to each spring so here is a painting demo using negative painting techniques to commemorate the event.

Thank you so much Steve - this was absolutely awesome. I so wish in my earlier days I had more intensive instructions on negative painting - I have never really gotten a handle on it and this painting shows how much more alive the subject is!!!

I just finished watching this video on this very quiet Palm Sunday afternoon. I was able to attend our beautiful St. John's Church virtual service this morning. What a blessing. And then to get to watch you paint azaleas. That caps off a lovely day at home. Thanks, Steve. I am glad you are well, and you lovely family. It was so nice to see them in the last video. All your fans love you, and we all pray for you and your dear ones that you will come through all of this well. We never expected this kind of Holy Week, but it will keep us in prayer. Steve they turned out BEAUTIFUL. For not being a painter of florals you do what I dream of. We had azaleas in CA and I was over the moon for them. Then we were moved to the Pacific Northwest and there were azaleas AND rhododendrons. My goodness it was gorgeous. The rhodies were taller than I, in every color imaginable. The Lord had a ball creating them all. I've thought of that verse in Matthew numerous times the past few weeks. My sister said to me yesterday, "we know the end of the story". Amen. 🤗🙏

We have the same color azaleas in our yard and when they bloomed I took pictures so I could paint them but I couldn't figure out how to get this look... Now I know how!! Thank you, Steve!! 💖

I loved the review of the sketches/paintings in the Kilimanjaro book! I watched all those and my favorites are still the pine branches and your fascinating tree branch studies. I have this kind of flowers on my garden, I tried to paint them some times, but the result was disapointing, too much clasic. I also tried to do negative painting, but in the middle of the work I usually lose the limits of the draw. But I never used the colour pencils, I am going to trie again. Of course the results will not be like yours, but I will learn a little bit more. Thanks a lot.

This was really enjoyable to watch. I love the Mijello 55 well palette (though it does take up a lot of room), but lately am using the Frank Webb palette more for my larger pieces--easier to use large flats with that one.

Hi Steve - Really loved the sketches, especially the trees. Were you using mostly M. Graham? I need to pick up that sketchbook, but I already have about 100 books I need to fill. theres a high chance kilimanjaro is made by st cuthburts mill most because they make their own brands and i believe they make winsor and newton proffessional watercolour paper too

Hi Steve, I just want to say thank you for all these videos, they inspired me to paint more often! By the way I have a question - how do you preserve and protect your paintings? Is there any way we can keep the paintings from fading without using glass? (Like varnish spray?)

I put them in zippered portfolios. I use artist grade light fast paint so they don't fade. If using glass not sealer is necessary but you can seal them with a UV spray. In storage its not necessary though. UV light is what causes fading.

I do not. Sorry. I have a very strict philosophy on critiques. It has more to do with where an artist is in their journey and their learning level and that can't be determined by looking at one or two paintings. I have to have spent time with the student.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I use those watercolor journals, and right now I can’t seem to find them any anywhere in stock...seems they’re all made in CHINA!
