The Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) is a 41.5 mile loop trail located in Moshannon State Forest in central Pennsylvania and is marked with yellow blazes. This trail traverses a wide variety of habitats-wetlands, thick rhododendron, beautiful pines, and gorgeous streams. The majority of the trail has water sources every few miles so carrying extra water isn't necessary. There are also many primitive campsites spread out along the trail. Hiking counterclockwise from the eastern trail head on Route 504, rewards the hiker with a series of four excellent vistas at the end of the hike. There are some challenging sections but overall this trail is fairly mild. Trail maintenance was excellent and most intersections with roads or trails were well marked with signs showing mileage to the next point of interest.
I would highly recommend this trail for folks looking to get out on their first multi-day trip. The excellent trail conditions, abundance of water, and beautiful scenery make the AFT an excellent choice for a first multi-day trip. Though we completed the entire AFT in two days, most people should probably plan on 3-4 days to enjoyably complete this trail. The Moshannon State Forest also has free maps available that are an excellent trip planning resource. Looking forward to doing this one again!
