Spring Brings Brood | It's What Bees Do

The season has began in earnest. I'm seeing nests growing exponentially and we're getting very close to seeing colonies swarming. I have to be on my toes and with keeping a full time job, I tell ya, it's getting hard to keep up. But keep up I must. Come on out in the bee yard with me and let's take a look at some colonies and be sure they're not preparing to leave.

Mike - it might be the camera's plastics, emitting odors into the air. Certain plastics have been know to emit "pheromone-like" odors. That may be the issue. Put a dab of Honey Be-gone on the camera and see if that works.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Very well could be Jeff. I noticed the first few times I used the new tripod, they hit the plastic part like crazy and just attacked it. After a couple weeks, they're leaving it alone now. I've handled it enough to get propolis and smoke all over it. I might try to spray something on the camera. Mask the smell maybe.

@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
I’ve wondered that too Jon. It’s either a frequency thing with the 8, or the color. They also attack the black base on the tripod and not the silver stick, although my last tripod was black and the left it alone. But this base has a Bluetooth button. My two silver cameras attract 80% less bees, but the dark colored mic cover is what they all attack. It’s either the color, or some weird frequency. I am really thinking it’s the Bluetooth frequency. When the bees get more nectars and we get going good I. The season for them to calm down, I’ll try the 8 again.

Boy they hate that camera for some reason! LOL I wonder if they have a drone trap and whether you can do a mite wash on nothing but drones. LOL They are useless anyhow to the hive. Not sure if it would give an accurate estimate for the mites throughout the hive though ! Put a frame of nice drawn comb smack dab in the middle beside the queen. Come back in 3 days and pull that frame to graft from. You know there can not be any eggs more than 2 days old on it.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
I usually don’t do timing frames for eggs since it’s just another step in the process. When i get some actual breeder queens I’ll be doing something similar to what you’re talking about. I’ve gotten pretty good at identifying the right larvae to graft, it once I get breeder queens setup, it’ll be a breeze. Just not at that level of production at this time, so if I’m getting 15 to 20 cells on a run, I’m happy since that gets me what I need.

Happens every season like this. They calm down as the spring progresses. What’s hard to notice is they’re not actually on me the way they are the camera. I have a few in my face, but nothing like you’re hearing or seeing. As far as Africanized, not even close. If the camera wasn’t there, it’s night and day. @MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 3 месяца назад
Market went great this weekend Russell. We actually go every weekend. We’ve been going to that same market for about 8 years now, about 6 months after it started. It used to be in a covered structure and on Thursday evenings. And it had vegetables, meats, prepared foods, etc.. A real community gathering in Thursday evenings. Then it went to Thursdays and Saturdays. Rhen just Saturdays. Then the 2020 incident and we were shut down and came back to the new location. Every Saturday we’re in town, we’re down there. That’s how I’m able to gauge pretty closely how much we need to produce each season.

Hey Mike. Thanks for the video. I agree that the Hive Alive fondant is great for the bees. I also bought a Hive Butler. i got the one with the two lids. Its great for splits, swarms and for short-term storage of deep honey frames. We're still in Winter here in SE PA. Warm daytime temps above 45 with days in the 60's. Nighttime temps dipping below 40 this coming week. So, I have not pulled my hives apart to do inspections. The bees are brining in lots of pollen and are all over the water supply near the hive. I think we have a couple more weeks before its warm enough for inspections. I believe once the weather breaks we will see lots of swarm activity.

@@MikeBarryBees ya I am bad about putting the out yard on the back burner putting it off off off an then it catches me with my pants down. I thought about pulling my colonies off that yard BUT there is great great tasting honey coming out of it. I would be really dumb to loooooose that spot an the amount of honey is unbelievable. Thanks

Holy cow! They hate that camera. I was at the bee yard today and each hive I went through had about 3 frames of uncapped nectar in them. My flow has definitely kicked off. That said, we are expecting temps in the low 30's for the next couple of nights, yikes. I am sure they will survive but it stresses me out. Anyway, great video as always. I love seeing what your up to and how you and the bees are doing. Do you think you would use a Beetle Sucker 5000 if I made you one? If so I knock one out for you to assist in your summer beetle battle :-).

Well Bug Farmer, the reply I made won't pull up, but basically, I said we too have some 30's and then 40's, but the populations will take care of the brood. My NUCs could lose a little brood, but they'll be okay. and I saw your video pop up with you saying your flow is coming in, but haven't sat still enough to watch it just yet. But it's in que....I'd use a beetle sucker if I had one. Let me know what you're getting for one and shipping and I'll put one to use.

I’m glad to see you training your bees- that one trying to take over your show was a little slow about moving.

Well, sometimes they listen and sometimes they don't. She's an older worker, so she knew to listen and get off the lens.

Thanks a lot for this video, I think I learned a lot from this one with a filter of what I have to do because I live in a small town with confusing rules and regulations that I will have to clarify with the right people. I don't think the people that put in the rules know anything about bee hives. Wish me luck, I'm going to have to be covert in my questioning to not give them more information that an ignorant person in small city government could run with. It's enough to make you want to move.

I am looking into that. Only issue is that the bees still cover the camera. They block the view. But I do plan to try one.
