My favorite thing ever Konmarie has said is "get rid of storage solutions that are not already in a house if possible" meaning no boxes, no extra dressers, no extra plastic solutions......that blew my mind.....now that is honestly what I want to do with my things. I don't want room to fill.....I want to get rid of things that make me have headaches. That second home is almost frustrating to look at....it's so ugly. That poor kid has a bit of relief in his room.

The 2nd house lacks warmth to me too. I want to know where the family reads w no lamps or throw blanket, no where to to rest your feet when you're on the sofa? I need to purge to but I guess "a reading situation" brings me joy and I will never purge that idea.

soulless house indeed .. if she only puts one large painting that can serve as a rest for the eye and manipulate the lighting a little bit it can turn the space dramaticly and bring it to life without cluttering it ... but thats how she believe things should be what can you do about it ..

Well if you are the type to say oh I'll get to that later or I'll clean this some other time you would gain much from decluttering. Many people don't even know what they have so are they really filled with joy from items they don't even know exist? How can you possibly care for every single item the same way. My brother loves holding unto empty boxes and clothes that don't fit and very old.

Yes and no. You can get a picture that you like. The places to go would be the Salvation Army or any of the Good Will's or Consignments.. As far as family pictures are concerned pick a wall in you house to show them off and hang them.. I have a sister in law who hung hers on the stairwell wall.. If you have a lot of nick-naks then don't put them out all at once.. Pick two seasons of the yr and change them out.. Btw, people actually look at your walls when they come into your house.. What ever you have on the Wall reflects what kind of a person you are.. This lady sounds like a very boring person..

In the end of doing the Kondo method, I would like to get to a "healthy" balance somewhere between Marne's and Reshma's house. I admit my house now is filled with stuff that needs to go and I aspire to a minimalist aesthetic...I NEED the Kondo Method!!! BUT... for me Reshma's house doesn't have a zen minimalist feel to it, it looks sterile...or like it's her first apt and she just moved in with nothing to her name. Robi Ludwig says in the video "your environment needs to be an expression of who you are...and if someone needs their environment free of anything to think creatively then maybe that's what they need". But her house does not look creative or calm...her "enforcing" that her son can only put anything on his wall (the wall that is the size of a door) seems a little militant and what about his creative thinking, and her fridge and cabinet with 2 growing boys looks frighteningly empty.

hipretty , exactly right: it doesn’t look *minimalist*, it lacks any character,/personality, as if they either just moved in & haven’t hung anything, or are waiting until they can afford to buy. I, too, am concerned about the severe restrictions she places on how the boys manage their own private spaces.
@carlosdelaincera321
@carlosdelaincera321 5 лет назад
@@ritatocta8551 I totally agree. Teens eat A LOT. They also need to feel comfortable making choices. What's wrong w a fruit bowl over flowing w quick grab fruit, a jar of snacks on a counter top, cereal if the boys decide they don't want to eat mom's pre made food? I don't find the 2nd home creative or calm either. Maybe it's just me but It would make me anxious to have paper towels in plain view instead of something lovely like a plant or my cook books; maybe nothing on top of the fridge at all is even better.
@pluu9094

Yes, minimalism does not mean soulless or sterile. I do want to aspire to the minimalist look but I know in my heart that it's not realistic for me. lol. I just love surrounding my place with things that I love and things that spark joy. (But I will admit, I will have to purge and only really surround myself with only those that truly “spark joy.” So yes, I'm inspired by Marie Kondo's method and will have to try out it!)

I agree. As someone who despises clutter and has adopted the minimalist mentality over the last couple years, I do think that the second family has taken things a bit too far. I agree with the things she said. I feel the same way she does. But I still like to express myself by things I hang on my walls, and I allow my children to do the same. And my refrigerator is covered in pictures that my girls have made. I do have a folder for each of them to keep all of their pictures, but some of the pictures just stay on the fridge. I can't bring myself to take them down because they bring joy to me. A home should be an expression of who you and your family are. You can be a minimalist and still do that.

True. I’m a minimalist but always allowed our 3 to decorate as they wanted. This summer we became empty nesters and are left with bold pink/blue walls, guitars hanging on the walls, NIN (Nine Inch Nails) posters and what not. It’s called life. We’ve got 1 room painted and are too tired to paint the other 2 right now 😂. Let the kids decorate. They’ll be gone soon enough.

As a child of a large family, our mom put up beautiful prints of landscapes on our living room walls and every room had a crucifix and religious pictures like the Guardian Angel with two kids crossing a bridge. I never wanted lots of stuff on my walls growing up because I didn't have the money. Now, as an artist, I choose a warm and inviting wall color as well as hanging other artist's work. My art studio on the other hand, is a whole different story with lots of things that spark joy and make me want to paint and draw! :-)

I have learned one major thing as I continue to want to down size and keep what is important.... minimal for one person doesn't mean the same for the next. To one it could be 50 clothing items and 50 items for everything else. For me, it is still a work in progress, yes to editing my clothes as my style changes and I like different things; yes, to getting rid of paper work and things that don't serve a purpose for me. Yes to keeping my sewing supplies as it helps just have to stay organized and sort often. Lastly yes to my stock for making my cleaning supplies and such (which isn't a lot). Truth is decluttering and downsizing is to make whatever space you are in to what you want it to look like, then continue the process as it is constant. Second I would recommend to those who don't use a lot of space in a home, go smaller, as smaller is easier to clean and will help you save money in the end. Life is about the people and doing those things you enjoy, not about stuff dominating your life and making you overwhelmed. The key is a healthy balance as is heard in a lot of these comments.... just have a vision of where you want to go and start there, just the fact it can't be given to someone else as a parent to a child- the child might adapt it differently in their life and it is truly their's to develop what they like.

I have always been neat and organized so this is common sense to me! I could never live in chaos like some of these people have! I believe in the items of items sparking joy! I just moved recently into a new house in a new city and my family and I just kept the best of the best of the items we owned. That lady whose house is "immaculate" is ridiculous! It is too bare and empty; There is a difference between providing a house and a home. And the way she is living is not conducive to creating a home. I believe in decluttering when needed and keeping a neat, clean, organized and beautiful home but do it in a way where you still have things in your home that bring you joy and add value to your home whether that be aesthetically or functionally. Just because you own very little does not mean that you know how to create and decorate a home that is cozy, beautiful, and well kept.

Koreans and Japanese who are from huge cities like Tokyo or Seoul live in small pads like the typical New York bachelor's pad. Even the ones with a family of five. So huge houses like these must be a paradise for people like Kondo to organize.

That is so nuts to thank the objects. If you don’t need it just give it to the needy

My place is, is, um, well, if someone were to break in, they'd glance about and say, "Oh, heck to the no!" and go along their way, so psychologically damaged, they'd NEVER break in anywhere else and live as law abiding citizens for the rest of their days.

I wonder how can people keep buy so much stuff that they can't even handle.. and surprisingly folding method of marie kondo is so common in asia.. atleast in pakistan. But the unique thing she tells is to thank your house and old clothes..☺

I have a feeling that they grew up in an environment where their Grandparents and Greatgrandparents lost so much during the Depression and WW II, that they desperately hold on to stuff that they don't really need. I have her Book, and although I'm not a Hoarder I got rid of a lot of stuff and gave it to The Salvation Army. I think it was because I was so proud of what I was able to buy with my hard work and hard earned money. When I went to visit, a lot of what I gave away was gone most notably Books many of which are no longer in Print. On The UK Soap Opera Coronation Street Claudia helped her Boyfriend Ken, get rid of a lot of things, including Eyeglasses that belonged to his Late Wife Diedre. She also encouraged him to get rid of Old School Editions of Classic Books that he read multiple times. He felt a lot better and happier.

Believe it or not, I love taking pictures. But I hate hanging any frame on the wall. I just hate dusting it every week. Some lizards and spiders will make a permanent home there within a month. So my home has no photos at all. In fact I barely nail any wall except the kitchen wall for pots and pans
