About this video:
The Hellebore are blooming and are looking gorgeous. It was time to start some early spring garden cleanup and get rid of all the leaves and old foliage. I also took a trip to a local nursery to pick out a couple of new hellebore for my garden, and even picked up one for a friend to surprise her in her garden on her birthday! And a mandevilla update!
Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #gardentour #plants #cleaning

I’m in PA zone 6b, I cleaned up my hellebore 2 weeks ago. They look so happy now. I only have 3 at the moment. A friend of mine has a wholesale perennial nursery that’s open to the public on Saturdays. I’m looking forward to picking up some new plants soon, after I see if anything didn’t make it. Enjoy the nice weather! 🌷

Hi Alice. Do you mind me asking what part of PA you’re in? I’m in central PA and always looking for new nurseries to shop. I’m not aware of any wholesale places around here. 🌸🌺🌼

Oh my goodness Steph! We have a few Job Lots on the Cape (3 actually). I recently bought a very large concrete pot there with a vintage look for only $11. We had some trees taken down recently and I asked that the tree company leave about a 2 foot stump on one of them so I can place this pot there. Great place and always seem to find something good there.

How beautiful!!! I wish I could find hellebore more mature like the ones you got here, I have tried to grow them from bare root several times and they always start growing great and die off never figured out why they didn’t survive, I have one tiny bare root from last year that did survive no blooms yet but it is pushing new growth this year already. Hopefully I can run across some more mature ones and get those planted this spring. ❤

Hi Anthony! I have had comments left by other gardeners who have had luck ordering some online. I may try that next season as I find most of the pretty ones I prefer are already sold out this season. Hope this helps. Happy Gardening! 🥰🌱

I usually don't buy cheap but Ocean Job places had a lot of nice Garden supplies. They way i go through stuff makes it easier to buy there. They even had Evergreen tone, which I been looking for. I know so many garden centers says you can use eaither or. But I like to put stuff that is made for the plant. My ocd just doesn't affect my cleanliness and organizesness but also having things go with things. LOL

Hi, I live in France and LOVEEEE your garden! I didn't know about hellebores until I started watching different gardening youtubers this winter... Today's trip to our local nursery got me 4 hellebore plants! Sooo excited to add them to my garden... I also have to plant those two Japanese maples I got a few weeks ago... Hi there! Thank you so much for watching from France. I visited in 2020 and fell in love. I hope to visit again some day. Hooray for hellebore, 4 new plants for you to enjoy in your garden. Japanese maples are also beautiful. I have a collection and adore them. I bet your hellebore would look lovely planted under the Japanese Maples. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment.

I adore your channel, you are becoming one of my favorites. After watching your Japanese garden before and after and also your garden tour you just did w a friend I have been very inspired to try Japanese Maples. I want to start planting them in my backyard and I was looking up videos and I thought man I wish Steph would do a Japanese Maple 101 for those of us new to them that want to get started. Perhaps some good beginning specimens to chose. Which ones need sun and which ones need more shade. Sizes and colors. I’d love to learn about them in a video devoted to them 😊 made by you!

Nice video Steph. You are a good friend to take her such a lovely birthday gift! When I saw your mandavilla last year I decided then that I would try it this year & im looking forward to making some beautiful pots with them. I’m not lucky enough to have a green house close by and none of our big box stores in my area carried any live winter type perennials. They don’t even have any pansies available. I would love some hellebores. I’ll have to keep my eyes open! Have a lovely week end! 😊♥️

Hi there! I had 3 that I picked up in 2021 and they just bloomed for me for the first time this year. I purchased them from the nursery as very young plants. Possibly only started from seed that year or the year before. I have read that they take a few years to bloom. So if yours are young plants they might take a couple of season to produce blooms. Also, there are some that bloom later. I have one in my garden that is just sending up some bloom buds now while all the others have been in bloom for a couple of weeks. Hope this helps. 🌱

@rockymtngardener
@rockymtngardener 5 месяцев назад
I first ran across your videos when I was looking for ways to decorate my front porch for fall in 2023. I have very much enjoyed watching your videos since then. You are a lovely person with a lovely garden. Would you mind telling us the purpose of the landscape fabric in your "deer central" area? I have an area where I am considering putting landscape fabric down and I am wondering if the fabric is doing what you want it to do. Also, when you go shopping and show plants, if it works for you, please say what zones the plants can be grown in so I know if they might be available in my area. One more thing, if it isn't too intrusive, I would enjoy a tour of your garden shed.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 4 месяца назад
Hi there! Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, that fabric is there because we had some terrible weeds in that area that were large thorns (buckthorn, and briar). We were concerned about our children getting hurt by it, so we had to find a way to suppress them. So we spent countless weekends cleaning up the area and digging up roots and weeds and cutting things back. We wanted a way to keep them weeds down and to not have those return after working so hard to rid ourselves of them. So we opted for greenhouse grade permeable landscape fabric to help. While I don't love the look, its helped tremendously. I hope to cover it up some day but not sure how just yet. Thank you for the suggestions for future videos.

Hi Amy! I had never seen the biotone there until this season. Maybe check at another store in your travels. I thought it was so great that they had this much selection this year.

Great video as always Steph!!! ❤ I love your videos....Always! I was wondering if RU-vidrs could get a wholesale price on plants? I mean it is a type of 'business'...income. Maybe something to look into?? Getting a tax ID number isnt extremely difficult. I have a part-time flower gardening business. It's just me. No employees. Couldn't hurt. I mean plants are soooo expensive 🙄😬

Steph, lynne here from Canada. Love your videos. One question, do you cut back your creeping phlox or just leave it? I leave mine but wondered if I cut it back in spring would it thrive better. Thanks

Hi Lynne! I cut mine back when it gets too big and starts to over hang the sidewalk and driveway. Its really easy to trim back with some garden scissors or shears. They respond really well to being cut back.

Hi steph--love your hellebores!! Two questions 19:22 --what was that small rake you used in the shrub bed? think I need that one. Also have planted many hellebores, but they get eaten by something? any thoughts?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 4 месяца назад
Hi Cyndi! Its called a shrub rake. Its so useful to both spread mulch around shrubs, and to rake out leaves around shrubs. We use it so often in the garden. Here is one similar to mine: amzn.to/4clynL1 As for what might be eating your hellebore, they are generally not bothered by deer or rabbits. However, in doing a quick google search, these are some of their pests : mice, slugs, snails, weevils

I’ve never heard of fertilizing daffodils before the bloom? Is that a requirement?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 5 месяцев назад
It is not a requirement at all. I just like to feed them once a year, and this is typically when I do them. I read at some point that daffodils like to be fertilized in early spring. So that's when I've always done it.

Hi there, I don't have experience with propagating them. I have had them self seed themselves a little though. 🌱

My hellebores’ tender new leaves and flowers are always eaten up by rabbits! I have to put metal wire cages on each one of them. So annoying!
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 5 месяцев назад
That is frustrating. So sorry. You could also try spraying them with invisible fence deer and rabbit spray. This spray works well for me in my garden.

Warning: I bought all the big bags of plant tones, rose tones- stored the bags in my garage and it attracted rats. The rodents chewed through these bags .. had mounds of fertilizer poured out of the chewed holes at the bottom of the bags. From that experience I will only buy the small bags and not store it. I love the fertilizer and the first time I saw in big bags I thought I would safe money wasn’t worth trying to get rid of them and cleaning the disgusting turds.

Thanks for sharing Tina! This is important information. It could be helpful to place those fertilizers in covered 5 gallon buckets, or even in sealed plastic totes to protect them.

I enjoyed your video and learned quite a lot from it, as well. What varieties of hellebores do you have in your garden?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 4 месяца назад
Hi there! Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I currently have the following varieties: Ivory Prince, Wedding Party Series: Rome in Red, Confetti Cake, Tropical Sunset, and True Love. I also just added the New York Night, and Sandy Shores. Lastly I have some gold collection hellebore that are a deep red and fade to a mauve pink coloring. Hope this helps 🌱
